Sci-Fi Panel from Drywall

So I was looking around for some inspiration…and also to do something novel. While I was cleaning up on a project on the house, I thought to myself that I could use the scrap drywall and lumber for a Star Wars Panel. I wanted it to have a Galaxy’s Edge kind of feel, even though the base design is very empire. I think the mashup of those two worlds came out very nice.
I did learn that using fiber optics is much trickier than expected. I wanted it to look like electrical sparks, but unless the room is completely dark…it was unnoticeable. I chalk that up to a learning curve.
Since I have started this journey, a part of my goals is to always make the price point of these props to be as close to the zero cost as possible. Using found items and scraps help make most any prop affordable…another reason why I like this hobby. I also learned that while drywall and 2x4’s can be used…they make for a very heavy prop. So foam and ¼” mdf will still be my go to for future builds. This was just a “Can I do it experiment?”
….Mission Accomplished

It is great to hear you liked it Cerise. And the story was half… just for levity, but the last half was building more upon the story I started in the Star Wars water filtration episode I did late last year.

No matter how many times I start trying to make a traditional Star Wars panel,…I get inspired to make a hard left and go “earthy texture”. I’m pleased to hear you like it. Hopefully I’ll have something larger scale out soon

So well done! I love the evolution and level of comfort you have achieved doing these! Great video and great panel!

Thank you Shawn for the kind words. To be honest, there are times when painting, I have to think to myself “what would Shawn do?” Almost as a way to psych myself up for more expansive color palettes, grime and weathering past what I first think it should be. And this is just like you said…”an evolution”. I have big plans to make a much larger scale build along this same texture theme.

Never thought of using drywall. And wow who knew this about George! 😜

It was super fun and easy to work with. But the downside is weight. I think I will stick to EPS foam, but am really happy I gave drywall a try

Thanks Dennis. I’m hoping to build and expand on this theme this spring. Winter is such a tough painting season…even in California.

Dude, this is fabulous! I love it and the story telling. Most excellent. What mixture did you use for the texture mud? I have a small corner I want to do something like this to. Thanks for sharing!
@garlandsworkshop
@garlandsworkshop Год назад
Thx Bella The items I use are plaster of Paris and/or grout (sanded or unsanded depending on texture you desire). I find that toothpaste to drywall mud consistency is best. The plaster can be heavy, so anchor well to the wall. And while the drywall on this one was super easy and fun…it too is heavy. So I use EPS foam typically to reduce weight. Hope this helps. And I’d love to see pics or a content video of whatever you come up with. Cheers!

@@garlandsworkshop I have an old hollow door I'm wanting to add texture to after adding some foam shelves. Door is not attached to anything nor used as a door. Just a big panel. Worth a shot anyway. Thanks Garland! -Thespoena
