Denis Villeneuve once said, "“I didn't turn to science fiction, I went away from it" when responding to why he got into science fiction after doing budget dramas early in his career. In this video, we will take a look at the journey to making DUNE and becoming one of this decade's best Sci-fi directors.

VIDEO NOTE: First, I apologize about the pronunciation. We did some research into it and I just got the wrong impression about how it was said. Kind of sucks because I really did try to find the correct way he says it, but now realizing I probably should start learning some French 😂 anyways, thanks for being patient with an English speaker such as myself and I'll definitely revert to traditional French pronunciation in the future. See below where we got a bit confused 🥲 To clarify, did some research into pronunciation for Villeneuve. Traditional French is a silent "e" but then I watched this video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PEGsFvbDmEw.htmlsi=-_mQleedUBYap831 The latter half there is an "eh" or "ay" he adds. I try and go for the way our specific subject says the name. I also could have misunderstood the over annunciation of the "v" in the word, if so my bad! I'll stick with the traditional French pronunciation in the future. My bad but also just wanted to let everyone know we did try and research it, just maybe tried a bit too hard on it 😂 Slightly frustrating to have this distract from a cool story about a cool director. Appreciate everyone watching!

A part of me enjoys how underrated it is though. No joke my favorite movies of all time. Both of the films together. I’m not saying it’s the best film ever made. But the music! The aesthetic. The whole atmosphere I felt such a strong and emendate connection with. Made me feel very strange actually. It felt so familiar that I almost felt as though I had worked on it in a past life or something. I’m not one to believe in such things but that’s how it felt. I’m an artist/designer. Ive invested my whole being into this lifestyle. Some of the concepts and imagery are so similar to actual thoughts and visuals I’ve had it kinda scared me. Like “omg there it is! There’s that vision I’ve been chasing in my mind but have thus far been unable to grasp.” The films just resonated so deeply with my soul for whatever reason. Anyone else have a similar relationship with these films?

For me, as a French Canadian myself, it was the pronunciation of Villeneuve that was problematic. 😅 Not going to criticize, but inform, haha! He added an "é" or "ay" sound at the of his last name, which shouldn't be the case. The "eu" phoneme in the middle is unique to French, like "th" is to English, if you want. It's closer to "eh", but not quite; a little higher. So the closest I can come phonetically while writing it down for an English-speaking audiance is this : "De-nee Vil-nev". I tried it using Google Translate's Listen button and it's pretty close.

A note on Dune: The one director who succeeded in adapting it before was John Harrison. David Lynch arguably failed even though he did end up delivering a movie. Villeneuve has become one of my favorite directors -- and straight up my _favorite_ sci fi film director -- in just a few years. Arrival was the first film of his I saw, and it was instantly one of my favorite sci-fi movies. As much as I love Star Wars and the like, their plots are pretty straightforward. I love DENSE films. And Arrival fulfilled that desire. Then Dune came out, and again, I thought "YES. THIS is the kind of sci-fi I want to see." Just as dense, just as expansive, just as visually breathtaking. Then, I just saw Dune Part 2 yesterday. I would put that film on the same shelf as LOTR. No joke. It is a MASTERPIECE. I'm pretty sure Villeneuve's sci-fi movies will be the only ones I ever rate 6 stars out of 5. I also love how you pointed out that Herbert was kind of upset that readers thought Paul is the hero. I have never heard before that he said that, but it makes perfect sense to me. From when I read the first book, I saw that it was probably going to be a tale of a Chosen One gone bad. A will-he-won't-he story, watching him walk the tightrope of dictator/god vs humble hero. When I saw the movies, I LOVED that I could tell that Villeneuve had picked up on that too, and was NOT portraying Paul as a straight Chosen One hero. It's brilliant.

Saw it last night and blew away my expectations of how it would be. Truly fantastic sci-fi. But yeah, Dune is not a typical story and people often get it wrong what it is trying to say. Also, if you want some more Dune content we are doing an entire video on the production timeline and some cool bts stuff on Dune here on Wednesday hopefully!

I straight up have never been a fan of a director like I've been a fan of this guy. I love every movie I've seen from him. Blade Runner is probably my favorite movie of the decade. That said despite all the positive reviews I am a bit worried about dune 2. Because of the direction he took with Chani, her being the protagonist and against the prophecy. I wish he kept it a faithful adaptation. It's also apparently more of an action packed movie which is kinda new for him. And I wonder if it's because his movies are brilliant but under perform for being slower and longer. Even though that's part of what makes it so good.

@3choblast3r4 2 месяца назад
@@poindextertunes I've loved every Villeneuve movie, so far, they've all been masterpieces. I personnaly still haven't seen Dune2. But I have noticed that most people that are disappointed are disappointed due to the changes with Chani. So that kinda confirms for me that I will also be disappointed with that. But outside of Chani and changes from the book that I might not like. I have no doubt it's a masterpiece of a movie. Just maybe not as good of an apdation as it could have been. And I'm 99% certain that's purely because some tards wrote "this is a white saviour" movie about the first one so they needed a strong women of color to be a bossgurl and go against the prophecy, be an "independent thinker" Which is dumb, because Chani is madly in love with Paul. The man she loves, fits perfectly in her people's messiah prophecy. She'd be the one that would most easily believe and support the prophecy. She'd be his most loyal and obsessed follower. Not the one that would stand up and question the prophecy. Think about it, men or women. When we are in love we tend to ignore all the red flags. But now .. Chani has to be "strong and independent." I get setting up Dune Messiah but they should have chosen another character to be the scepitcal one. It's really bad that it's Chani of all people.
@Largentina.
@Largentina. Месяц назад
@3choblast3r4He didnt make Chani the protagonist. He made it so its more clear that Paul is not a good guy. The reason he did this is because Frank Herbert was upset that people didn't get that message from the original book. Which is why he made Messiah in the first place. He in no way mad Chani the main character.
@3choblast3r4
@3choblast3r4 Месяц назад
@Largentina. he says he made Chani the main protagonist in interviews. I've still not seen the second movie. But people will always love a sympathetic villain or boy turned evil dictator. The same way the joker wasn't supposed to be someone people idolized, but they still did. Not to mention Chani is the WORST possibke choice to oppose Paul. She's in love with him ffs. People are even more blind to red flags when they are in love. But she's just so special, strong and independent .. lol

Technical suggestion: use a film grain overlay on screen mode rather than a noise filter (which still leads to some RU-vid artefacting) thanks for the video though
@FrameVoyager
@FrameVoyager 2 месяца назад
For which part? Some of the artifacting your might see if because a lot of the time we can't always source high quality videos or photos. So we smooth them out with film grain which tends to look a lot more pleasing than digital artifacting.
@jonnowocky8179
@jonnowocky8179 2 месяца назад
@@FrameVoyager to be more constructive sorry: I find the noise from a straight noise plugin sometimes tends to ‘dance’ excessively in flat areas and gather around edges in a sort of busy, diffusing manner, especially if the picture is going through a TV and its inherent image enhancement software. I have everything disabled on mine but it still reacts to it more noticeably than an apple screen for example. I’ve noticed even a few recent Netflix shows and films where they’ve employed VST noise as visual ‘glue’ and to combat compression, but where the results are artificially busy because the noise is calculated randomly per frame, and so looks ‘detached’ from the image. I do some editing and found the best solution was ‘emulsion 4k grain overlays’. Not only does overlaying this produce a much more pleasing and diffuse effect, but it makes rendering 10x faster, noise was always killing my export times prior. I bought a pack from them a while ago and I can now always find the correct amount and I’ve probably saved a couple weeks of my life starting at an export bar…thanks again for the video btw

The first time he pronounced it would be the standard French way to pronounce it: ending on the v-sound, with the French "œ" sound much more open than the close "u" sound, like in English "blur" (minus the r) vs. "blue". The dangling "ə" at the end of the last example is probably due to actually over-pronouncing the word. But again, I wasn't trying to be mean, just being an ass ;).
