I was 22 years old when I had my first sciatica episode. I lost all function, had to learn how to walk, sit, stand everything from scratch. But i got over it in three months. Mild discomfort rarely. But I didn’t take care of myself. Right now i’m on my second sciatic episode. Its not as severe as the first but from now on I will never stop doing these exercises no matter how fine I feel!

@@Ben_Mdws before claiming it never goes away, did you actively see a physiotherapist or did you wait a few decades to finally see one and then have on and off appointments thinking they weren't going to help? because i don't believe you, i went to one right away and within 12 weeks of appointments i am back to normal now.

OMG you're story sounds like mine... I got injured in 2019 during a physical restraint... I received physical therapy for 3 weeks but my employer denied my claim so I had to wait til Dec 2020 for approval... I worked that entire time then I had to relocate to an office pos and now I'm in worse pain and my employer don't believe I'm in pain cause I worked all of 2020 and 2021 😔

At 5:35 a pillow position is shown. For those who might try it, or have and did not feel comfortable: I improvised a similar position for a while (instinctually). My sciatica is on my right side, so I'd lay in bed on my left side and position my right leg so my right knee (slightly bent) would hang over my left leg and I'd turn my right let and foot to the left as far as it could go. This stretched my right leg in a way that temporarily alleviated pain. I did try the pillows, for my right sided sciatica, but it caused pain in my left knee. I hope this slight alteration of the pillow technique helps others.

Bill and Brad, the wedge makes such a difference because it puts the pelvis in a neutral position because it rolls it flat. Therefore there is less pressure on the sacrum and other associated pain. Also, I have used a lumbar roll since April 1993. I had a severe accident in 90. I have been doing PT exercises 2x a day for most of that time. I had severe shooting pain for 4 years. Chiropractic helped but PT made a bigger did.

Been in PT for various things for the last 3 years- but this year I have 2 herniated discs. My back was getting better and now it's worse- and I have noticed some exercises from other videos you guys have done that I probably shouldn't have been doing so I started to do what you all recommend. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU. I get most my relief when my back is taped but I'm working hard with exercises to be 110% again eventually so I can go back to doing things I love like the gym and running. The way you two communicate reminds me of the moose from Brother Bear haha love it.

These tips are very good. But in my wife's case the MRI shows disc bulges with nerves are entrapped so the stretch won't go past the block. She stretches before bedtime. She has a cooler with ice packs by the bed for spasms. She uses a microwave hot disc next to my back which is in a side position while sleeping. She gets up every 3 hours due to pain and walks around and take meds if needed. She is getting medical marijuana to try to get off Opioids. During the day She takes extra strength Tylenol and 2 baby aspirin daily which helps. Walking compresses the spine so try to use a walking stick or shopping cart to lean on. if she start having problems in the bed she goes to the firm recliner which takes the pressure off the disk. It takes 1-12 months for these nerves to calm down so hang in there.

Wow, I've been using the footrest in my car by instinct. Thankfully I only have mild pain or discomfort. Also, nobody talks about this, but schools need to start addressing posture and natural movement patterns. I've been sitting 6 hours a day for 15 years in sub-par school chairs, you can't even rock back (another instinct to better support the spine), cause the teachers don't let you, and now I have a herniated disc at 22. Fantastic.

At age 19 (1970) I got a low back injury and was miserable for over a month. Right away, I was using a chair in bed to sleep. I placed the back of the chair on the mattress. This meaning my hips and legs were elevated. So I was laying on my back but "Sitting" in a chair. It gave me some restful nights after which I slowly improved. I had numerous back incidents for the next 20 years but they tapered off in time and duration, but were never predictable. Driving an automobile is the most damming activity for a bad back, especially if the OEM seat is lousy. I only went to a chiro once in all those years. Since 1990, I have been OK but still get a stiff lower back here and there.

Comment on your bad leg, good leg with the Cane: I walked to the grocery, bought a 6 pack and walked back home, my left hip had pain, so I carried the bag with the six pack on my good side. The pain increased on the bad, left side, when I put the load on the bad side, the pain was better, doesn't make sense, but that is the result, and in repeated every time I did it. With the load on the good side, bad side hurt, put the load on the bad side, felt better. Never varied, when repeated and always predictable. Don't know how that relates to use of a Cane, except that it is not logical, but we don't know how non symmetrical loads change and contort the spine and all of the connecting parts. That was a couple years ago and was not a big deal, it has developed into a big deal now and I am progressing well. It has been a long, unexpectedly long healing process. Condition occurred overnight, was debilitating, used crutches from September 25, 2017 through Christmas day. Then limped around until a few weeks ago. Jan 11 2018, RMI confirmed damaged disk between L4 and L5. I have always been an aggressive guy on workouts, but trying to walk through this was a definite mistake. Just thought your comments on the Cane were interesting, in that they compared to my observations. Thanks........

Makes perfect sense to me if the disc is bulging laterally and you're leaning away from the bad side you would open the disc more so cause it to bulge more on the affected side. If you lean toward the bad side then you close down the disc space and reduce the bulge.. Does that make sense?

Dealing with sciatica at the moment. My biggest advice to anyone who experiences an incident where they’ve hurt their lower back is to go get seen immediately. Do not wait and sit around just icing it and laying in bed. If you let the muscles and nerves stiffen up, it’ll be more difficult to get back to normal.

i often find that i fall asleep on my painful side. for some reason its the only side i can lay on. i almost always wake up on my back with my feet on the bed and my knees bent though. ive been dealing with a herniated disc and 2 bulged discs in my lumbar for years. sept 2021 is when i really reinjured that area, and i have not been able to recover from it. every day is just so much pain. seems like nothing i do is making it better. its just either maintaining, or slowly getting worse. i tried chiro, yoga, deep tissue massage, and 2 different physios. i couldnt do the exercises the physio guys wanted without increased pain. the last physio i saw specialized in lumbar specific sports injuries, and he gave up on me after a week because i couldnt do the single exercise he wanted me to do. it made my legs numb for 6 days. my doctor, and the head spinal surgeon in my area both said my back is fine, and there's nothing wrong with it, but the doctor who first reviewed my ct scan noted that i have a herniated L5 that is pressing on the nerve pack in my spine. the head surgeon dismissed those findings, and wrote in his report that there were no issues. his report, and my doctor's report supporting his report totally screwed me out of any help i was eligible for. i fought an insurance company for 9 months to get a settlement, and it was less than half of the amount i would have made if i had been able to work. despite my doctor agreeing with the head surgeon, he was totally fine to try a plethora of drugs and steroid injections for pain relief though... he gave me 3 shots in 4 months into my sacrum, and now (8 months later) my sacrum is one of the most painful spots in my back. i cant get a second opinion (without standing in a line at the walk in clinic for 6 hours) because there arent enough doctors in my area now (we went from 27 down to just 7 doctors), so i have basically been left to figure this out and fix it on my own. that is how i found your guys' videos in the first place. i ended up losing my job 7 months ago because i couldnt work anymore, and now im just struggling to get though each day with as little pain as i can. i wish i could just figure out what to do. so many professionals have told me conflicting things to do over the years. ive been told to avoid any pain (if it hurts, dont do it), ive been told that its going to hurt, and you just have to push a little to get past it, ive been told that theres nothing wrong with my back, and i just need to work out to get stronger so it doesnt hurt. i cant do anything without pain. i really hurt it again yesterday loading firewood into the boiler to heat the house. its something i have to do, and i spent the remainder of the day, and so far all day today in a 8/10 pain state. i can barely walk today. last night i laid in bed for 3 hours fighting anxiety because i thought i had seriously damaged the nerves in my back, and was concerned that it might be permanent. i cant deal with the amount of pain i am in for much longer... i need to find relief. its creeping beyond the point of what i can handle.

Thank you for posting your expertise and advice! I have been trying to get comfortable sleeping for some time now. I am going ti try the wedge pillow. I can’t sleep on my sides without it feeling like my hips are being crushed. I have a bulge between L5 & S1 and it really has affected my hips. I am working on strengthening as I am way over flexible due to my yoga practice and repeated movement. Thank you!

I notice in most of your videos you say "pain", what if there is no pain? There is only numbness/tingling feeling. Are you all using these two as one in the same? I just want to make sure I can use these tips to help with the numbness. I have two herniated disc per MRI. Thanks in advance.

If you go to their website and follow the sciatica series they explain "pain" as actual pain and /or numbness, tingling, burning sensation, cooling sensation. I realize your post was 2 years ago, but this may help someone else seeing it for the first time.

Is a bulge the same as a herniated disc? Does sitting is bad for a bulge on L5-S1? What NOT TO DO for this condition? Please make a video about this. 🙏

What is you opinion on spinal decompression therapy? I had 2 bulged discs and one really bad herniated disc. Massive sciatica and loss of feeling in leg and foot. Spinal decompression therapy got me 98% pain free in 6 weeks.

I have to have a microdiscectomy (sp?) later this week (L5 S1.) What kind of exercises can I do AFTER surgery to help the healing process, and support my core and spine? A video about that would be super helpful.l when all the efforts of pt haven’t worked. 😞

I've had this pain for 1.5 years and Im 22.. been misdiagnosed and disbelieved by doctors until now. They suspect its a herinated disc and I am praying I will.get the MRI I have been asking for. It hurts to stand, it hurts to sleep for too long, the pain is constant and standing is uncomfortable. I can't function without pain meds. Fortunately, movement helps.

Some doctors are horrendous. I've been told I have a slipped disc, then also been told it's just 'muscle tightness'. Im the same as you, cant walk, stand sit without excruitating pain. Doctor said the reason they don't MRI everyone is because they don't need to unless you are going for surgery and they need to see what your spine looks like. Thankfully I found a good doctor who's working with my physio to create a care plan. They're treating me for a slipped disc. So far exercises are working well. Never needed an MRI.
