Dominic Jones’ dynamic talk highlighted how the scientific understanding of human movement is critical in the study of the martial arts. According to his instructor Dr. Ron Chapél, it is the responsibility of the martial scientist to experiment and find the most effective movement patterns that consistently perform in hands-on, stressful, self-defense situations. The audience enthusiastically participated in eye opening martial science experiments and discovered in the words of Ed Parker, that “To see is to be deceived, to hear is to doubt, but to feel is to believe.”
Associate Professor, Consultant, Martial Scientist. Focused on helping others achieve their education, business and personal development goals.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

Really interesting. Dom Jones was an entertaining and informative speaker. The demonstrations were cool!! Though the camera man needs a few lessons!

Thanks Dom It was a high risk presentation strategy to use a volunteer on the fly. The beauty of the martial sciences is that the ideas are testable and repeatable :-)

There is definitely a science to martial arts but this isn't it. There are more effective movements that use leverage. However, this TED talk is a bad example. This guy only has a background in Kenpo. His demos are not convincing especially thinking of "strong" vs "weak". The best way to demonstrate this is to avoid subjectivity and thought. Only isolate the movement. It's physics. Kanishka Sharma, who has a background in Kung Fu, did a better job in his TED talk. He teaches the commandos in India. He knows a variety of martial arts.

I agree there are better examples even with the handshake. Or the pushing. His are filled with very poor information.

Unfortunately, the second HD camera malfunctioned in my talk so the video was edited from a lower quality feed. Not ideal :-) The joy of live events.

I have not studied Judo but it's practitioners are tough and they know how to break fall, which is an essential self-defense skill.
