Microsoft researchers have created a system that uses artificial intelligence to keep a type of glider called a sailplane in the air without using a motor, by autonomously finding and catching rides on naturally occurring thermals, similar to how many birds stay aloft.

sambroido Microsoft allows you to use the computer or browser or whatever you like, under the premise that, if you don't use Microsoft products, it's likely because the team couldn't make the best product, or couldn't advertise it properly. Nice culture.

Evidently it's legal for them to fly from a moving vehicle - Which would be illegal for me to do (not that I like this rule anyway - part of an illegal policy by the FAA as part of the "drone registry")

Employees get to choose what device they want to use to develop their software. Most developers I know prefer Macs cause they are based on unix and work pretty well with linux.

I regret that they are working on a system with so many concurrent variables and have not yet discovered the Infinite Series With Multiple Ratios (SMRs). Their algorithms would be smarter, more precise, and with reduced computational work. The day is coming when I will join this group and help you with the HERU TECHNOLOGIES algorithms. Congratulations to the team and look forward to seeing you soon and I will be part of the best company in the world.

Soaring machine?? Always searching for the next buzzword. Airplane, glider etc were not cool enough, so now soaring machine. Just as AI, machine learning and deep learning have become buzzwords, even though these concepts have been around for decades.

yeah, but those terms come with implications (e.g. airplanes tend to have a destination), while 'soaring machine' emphasizes what is the focus of the exercise. (not that there isn't a buzzword problem: q.v. pokemon or buzzword)
