My boyfriend and I saw two flaming meteors last night between 10:00 and 10:30 pm Central Time. One was so large it lit up the night sky and the other had a pinkish streak that you could plainly see it was on fire.WOW!! Never had seen anything like it. This was in my backyard in Glencoe, MN

+Gloria Donnay I saw a very bright neon turquoise one in Hawaii and another huge one explode also in Hawaii. I haven't seen any like you did yet though. Nice find

Just checked outside and it's overcast right now. But I did catch a few three nights ago. Hopefully the next few nights are clear skies.

Don't forget to take your brightly-lit tent when you go into the dark country-side. Your fellow stargazers will thank you.

I don't understand why the debris from a comet should form a stream where the comet passed. I would think that the debris would form a slowly expanding cloud around the comet with each particle having the same velocity as the main body plus/minus its separation velocity. This cloud would continue along the orbital path with the main body. Of course the lighter particles would be affected by the pressure of sunlight but I don't see how that would result in a trail still marking the comet's passing many years before. Previous NASA articles about other meteor showers have indicated that each time a comet goes through the inner solar system, it leaves a slightly different trail due to the gravitational effects of the planets. This suggests to me that they are saying that the particles have become spread out along the old orbital path. Any help explaining this would be much appreciated.

@Dyslexic-Artist-Theory-on-Time
This week, Earth passes through a stream of debris from Comet Swift-Tuttle, source of the annual Perseid meteor shower. Forecasters say the show could be especially good this year because the Moon is nearly new when the shower peaks on Aug. 12-13.

Always get away from those city lights!

I hope climate change doesn't cause any issues for the meteor shower. I heard that having CO2 pollution in the atmosphere makes them explode more than a normal atmosphere that doesn't have CO2 pollution in it.

I've always wondered how it's possible the we on earth see the same stars and constellations every night since we are spinning easterly at one thousand miles an hour and wobbling on axis, all the while flying through space at what is it, ten thousand miles an hour? It boggles the mind to think that even though this is occurring we see any stars that are the same, night after night! Can you explain, please?

Keep in mind that NASA has a bad habit of reporting the maximum as if that's how many you will actually see, but in reality due to haze, light pollution, and the altitude of Perseus, the actual number is much less. In some cases half as much or less near city lights. So if its clear, go out and enjoy the show, but just be realistic about how many you'll see.

OMG people, please stop using the term "fold' as substitute for "times". It may sound more dramatic but the the quantities described by using fold are much bigger than using times.
