Biologists in New Zealand have found around 100 new species after exploring a rift some 5 kilometers beneath the sea. The organisms include some that scientists can't even identify, as well as a strange creature called a 'sea-pig'.

You joke, but that's actually happened before in NZ's waters. (Just not by humans) A lighthouse keeper's cat on had brought in a weird bird, so it was sent off to London for identification. By the time it had been identified as a new species, the cat had killed every single one of those birds on the island. This is the only known case of a single creature causing the extinction of an entire species. Edited for technical accuracy. Edit 2: Turns out this isn't quite true, and more of a pre-urban legend. Multiple factors led to the extinction of the Lyall's wren, and the above story was exaggerated for effect.

He looked like he “chucked” it down because it was likely dead already. They don’t care. It’s all in their pursuit of “knowledge”, and how “good” this will look for everyone involved’s LinkedIn profiles and their résumé/CV. It’s funny to me… Everyone complains about illegal fishing & “trolling” or “raking” the seafloor, which is clearly horribly damaging, but look at what these scientists did here. Basically raking a section of seafloor to analyze whatever they pull up. They forcibly removed living things from their homes to LOOK at them, and some of them, he said they couldn’t even figure out “what” they were! What a waste! So naturally, he chucked it back. At that point, nobody cared. 🫤 They don’t need to be gentle. The animals suffocated likely in the open air, if they even survived the capturing process, or the pressure reduction after being forcefully brought to the surface… but no bother to these ppl. Think of the LinkedIn!!

Scientists are a bit paranoid that way i have learned. I went on an reseaech excursion vessel that had seen a pod of 9 humpback whales that day. That was our goal, to go out and see the whales and track the migration. But they didnt post online or or tell other reasearchers right away because of this same reason. That's only my guess tho!

@@Flickvids100 We were taklking about deep sea mining which is obviously not senseless destruction. Also Im quite sure that there at least is a legal requirement to conduct studies about marinelife impact before the mining operations beggin. So yeah, not every human activity which is in the interest of the whole species (like getting minerals for green energy production) and causes liminal interference with the habitat of wildlife should be disregarded as unethical. If we say that than basically we should just simply go extinct as human life as we know it is incompatible with an intangible planet.

While it's true that ocean depths is generally considered quite difficult to cartograph/explore even by modern satellites, if we redirect just 10% of the funding used for space exploration, we would have gotten to know this earth much, much better today.

@@angstyteen6042 Space exploration is nothing but a d*ck measuring contest between the super powers and the ultra rich. Governments spending billions sending tin cans into a vacuum to retrieve rocks, burning through precious natural resources and heavily pollute our atmosphere in the process, while the rest of us shoulder the cost on the only planet that we can call home, and for what? So that Elon Musk can go to Mars for vacation and brag about it? The fact is that earth today faces many crisis that can be lessened, solved and outright prevented if the proper channels receive a mere fraction of the funding that goes into space exploration. Save your home first, before dreaming of conquering the universe, it's a simple concept to grasp.

Discovery of new biological mechanisms in these new species, especially those with promising potential for medical applications would help counter-balance other industrial interests, thus help conservation efforts. It's not only about the irreversible loss of diversity, but also the irreversible loss of knowledge.
