Hi Otto, wow lots of great info. We are in our third season of having a maple nursery, nope no experience, RU-vid trained with a few side visits to Heritage and Maples N More where we get our root and sine stock. After watching your videos we all want to say thanks. A few questions, you seem more concerned about under watering while others stress not over watering to avoid flooding the wound, could you provide a little more detail about watering around grafting. We noticed you topped your root stock, could you address when, how much and the effects that has on root stock and sine growth, you also don't use a sealing wax or paint to seal the wound, our trees are outside and subject to rain, any advice appreciated.

Hi, thank you for the kind words. When we water our young grafts we never water the graft itself, only the base of the pot. We do however mist the grafts extensively, especially the first two weeks after the graft. We top the root stock so that it is more manageable when sitting tight in the trays. A few good healthy branches is all it takes to get the moisture flowing up the root stock. Again this has been our approach since day one. There are many other opinions out there and in the end you will do what works best for you.

hi Otto thank you for sharing your knowledge!! Do you have an idea where I could find new varieties to collect. I'm in Italy, may be some companies in Europe could send to me... thank you!

There are some very good online sellers that ship internationally. January and February is the best time to order while the trees are still dormant. March can be tricky as the trees start to develop their new growth. In holland there is a grower that I would recommend Dick van der Maat www.dvandermaat.com/dick-van-der-maat-japanese-maple-nursery/

@@maplesandmusic I found Van Der Maat on the web two years ago but the first time they reply to me that the stocklist was finish, the second time they didn't reply to my message. Anyway I'll try again, at the moment as a professional grower I buy from Felix&DyKhuis Holland but would be interesting to find new varieties for grafting or just for my private collection. Thank you for the info!!
