This video shows how to disassemble, inspect, and reassemble the CVT transmission systems popular on motor scooters. This includes the variator, rollers, drive belt, clutch, clutch bell, torque driver, and more. Complete disassembly and reassembly.
This video shows a 1E40QMB / Jog / Minarelli 49cc two-stroke, but the basics apply to a wide range of scooters and some youth ATVs and karts.

I usually put grease in the grooves where the pins ride and a thin coat on the torque driver in the area between the seals.

Thanks so much for posting this video! I have a 2007 Baja SC50 with the QJ1P39QMB-3 motor mated with the 1E40QMB Jog/Minarelli CVT that uses 2 stroke CVT parts that look like the ones in this video. The clutch and variator look just like the ones in this video but the CVT cover is different and unique on the Baja. It is a big help to see a CVT that actually looks like mine being shown! It took me awhile to understand why videos showing typical Chinese scooter CVT's were using parts that didn't apply to my scooter. It was even more confusing as Baja also made another version of the SC50 in more recent years that was basically the same scooter as the TaoTao ATM50-A1 and Jonway YY50QT-6 which does use a typical Chinese CVT and has the more common 139QMB motor. QianJiang scooter who made the QJ Baja SC50 as a 4 stroke also makes a 2 stroke motor version that is rebranded and sold under various names. For anyone finding this video and comment that has this Baja SC50 {Keeway Hurricane body style} with the QJ {QianJiang} anomaly engine and 1E40QMB Jog/Minarelli style CVT just remember that it is the variator with the 21mm inner slide bushing and 15 tooth spline that fits the Baja and the 15x12 rollers that fit the variator. I would assume the performance variators and clutch assemblies and springs for the Jog/Minarelli CVT's will work on the Baja too. You can get the stock variator parts and rear clutch assembly and springs here www.scrappydogscooters.com/50CC_2-STROKE_PARTS.html and the hard to find 836-17-30 CVT belt here www.scrappydogscooters.com/Replacement_Parts.html I'm not trying to promote their parts on your video and you can find these parts other places like ebay but anyone with this QJ Baja SC50 will have a hard time finding these parts especially the CVT Belt until they realize it uses the 1E40QMB Jog/Minarelli CVT parts so I'm just trying to help anyone with this scooter. One other thing the engine on the QJ Baja is slightly different but any big bore kit up to 72cc with the 47mm or smaller piston should work. The 80cc big bore kit being called 100cc by many sellers with the 50mm piston won't fit this Baja without enlarging the opening on the case. Also remember the variator rollers that come with some big bore kits are 16x13 and won't fit as the Baja uses the 15x12. The CVT gaskets that come with the kits won't work either. Shared this video to my facebook page Moped and Scooter Lovers too. facebook.com/mopedscooterlovers

+photonrayswaves Good info. They are oddball engines. I'm not sure why they thought it was a good idea. They don't seem to perform much different than the typical 139QMB that's easier/less confusing to get parts for.

You should be able to see if there's a major problem with the clutch since it's apart. If you don't see any damage, nothing is loose, etc... the problem may be elsewhere. For the knocking, internal knock could be a sign of serious issues or could be something very minor. Rotate the engine with the variator off to start isolating the noise. Check the stator side as well.

Well today when on a ride the clutch locked up. The wheel wouldnt turn free of the engine. Pulled the cover off, sure enough one of the rivets that holds the centrifugal clutch shoe to the hub had broken. Repaired the centrifugal clutch pack and voila! she is perfect again. Vibration is gone, all is well in scooter land!

This video is great! ....I'm having issues with my gy6 150cc. Have a Dr. Pulley hit clutch on it...motor and clutch have less than 100 miles. Recently it isn't idling at all...on a cold start it feels like the clutch is engaged...and the bike pulls a little then it dies a few seconds later...to ride I have to start it, throttle and go...if I get to a full stop it shuts off...and that's when I feel a lot of resistance.

***** Hi, I have a problem with my Yamaha Aerox 100 2 stroke. When it is cold, it will accelerate really well even at low RPM. However, when it gets warmer (after 2-3 miles of riding) it will be really slow when first accelerating, but at higher rpm, it rides well (although not perfect). What I mean, is that when stopping and then giving it full gas, it does not want to go until about 10mph, when it hits the powerband and it starts accelerating, but, it doesn't over-rev, it just doesn't accelerate. The engine runs smooth and I've cleaned and check the carb so I'm pretty sure that's not the problem. I think that when I ride it, the clutch gets warmer and starts slipping. I checked the clutch drum bell today and it has turned blue/purple and also the clutch shoes seem to have gone orange and are quite worn. There's also a lot of black residue on the side of the case. Also, when I ride for a bit then stop, there's a burning smell - like burnt rubber or clutch. I'm pretty sure its the clutch, but I don't know which part of it exactly and the fact that it doesn't rev out when giving it gas makes me think it isn't the clutch. What do you think? Thanks, any help is appreciated!
@49ccscoot
@49ccscoot 9 лет назад
The discoloration on the clutch is telling you it's been hot. One major reason for excess heat in a CVT is slipping from clutch parts or the belt. As you accelerate and the gearing in the CVT changes, the rear pulley will spin much faster and the clutch will have more chance of engaging so that may be why you see the problem go away as you speed up. I would advise watching the video and going over the whole CVT at this point.

How many kilometres can I expect from a belt? I'm paranoid that I'll be miles from nowhere and the thing will break. I was thinking of carrying a spare but getting it all apart may be problematic if I need to carry all those tools. If I had an idea of life expectancy maybe just changing it every few thousand k's will do?

I use 788 17 28 Bando belts. Others seem to like the Mitsuboshi 792 16.6, but I'm not sure where to find them. Stage6 makes a 797 17 28 I believe. Whatever you do, just don't buy the no-name Chinese stuff that's really cheap or you'll probably end up buying another belt before long.

I have a SYM/Lance PCH 50. I at least want to inspect my belt. Coming up on the 6,000 mile inspection. Seems like SYM is very unwilling help. My local dealer closed in January. The nearest dealer is 80 miles away. Any advice? MRP carries some parts. How can a company be so independent. Don't they want to sell a product?
@49ccscoot
@49ccscoot 9 лет назад
+David Collins If it's the 1P37... engine, parts may be tough to find. If it"s the 139QMB/1P39QMB, you can find parts easily searching for that. You could try looking for online dealers that will ship parts if that's all you need. If you want a dealer to do the service, I don't think you'd have many options other than traveling to the nearest one. I'm a little surprised at the unwillingness to help since they claim to have one of the best warranties and part of the reasoning for their 49cc costing nearly $1000 more than cheap Chinese is the support.

I ditch the gasket most of the time, because there's nothing that needs to be sealed in or out for regular use. Sometimes starter setups will be picky with just the small amount that the spacing is off without the gasket though. One thing you can try to keep the gasket in good shape and so you don't have to mess with it is to apply a spray on gasket adhesive to 1 side. Use a thin film of grease on the other. It should stick to the case or cover but let the cover be removed easily.

I own a ZNEN L-Roar, the engine is GY6 157QMJ, the original belt that came with the scooter was an 835-20-30 ... I replaced it with a 842-20-30 and it was working quite well till it snapped after doing almost 1K kilometers, so i decided to replace it with the original size (835-20-30) and it snapped in less than 50 Kilometers, I got another brand and it snapped again ... now what could possibly be snapping these belts?

I think your variator should have 2 holes int he front where you can put something to lock it. The tool is shown in the vid, but you can make one with 2 metal bars and a couple of bolts that will fit into the holes, plus nuts to secure the bolts to the rods. You could also use a strap wrench to try and hold the flywheel on the other side while removing the vari nut. An impact and sockets are good investments though. Those will help with a lot of jobs.

49ccScoot, could I ask a question regarding my scooter? Around 4 years ago I disassembled my Aprilia Sr 50 2000 Air Cooled scoot and left it like that. Around a month ago, I decided to rebuild the engine and hopefully bring it back to its glory days. I am assembling all the parts and watching as many YT vids as possible, but I only have a problem with the starter clutch behind the variator, more specifically, I just have no damn idea if I am supposed to have any washers behind the variator. I have so many parts from when I took my scooter apart that I am trying to figure out where everything goes. In this scooter, you didn't have anything separating the two parts. Would it be dangerous or problematic to the engine if I, say, didn't install anything in between that I was supposed to in the first place? Cheers, mate, your videos are a godsend! I'll let you know when I manage to finish.

@49ccscoot
@49ccscoot 9 лет назад
94f1senna I'm not familiar with the Peugeot engines. In some platforms a bit of play is normal, typically these will be supported by a bearing under the CVT cover also. Some are meant to have hardly any play. Consult a service manual and find a spec for play in the shaft. I have manuals on the site. 49ccscoot.com

The first thing I'd do is clean the entire CVT area and all components. Inspect as you go. This vid should cover it. Replace the belt with a quality belt. I like Bando, Gates is popular. Stay away from no-name Chinese belts. They are known to fail prematurely. Get it back together and see what it does. It's normal for the starter bendix to be able to be removed. If it wiggles excessively in either the case or the CVT cover, it may need the bushings replaced. They should be sitting in the case and cover.
@racetime8824

Thanks a lot for the reply, my main problem now that I didn't cover in the video/hadn't realized yet is that the guy I bought this from replaced the belt at one point and he stripped the nut for the variator and I have no idea how to get it off. Torque driver just spins. I can take the clutch off and I've inspected that it seems to be in decent but not perfect condition, but I'm pretty sure I can't replace the belt without removing the variator. Any suggestions would be appreciated I have no idea how to get it off, and I'm afraid to try and clamp it down and use vice-grips because I really don't wanna bend the crankshaft or anything. Also I was provided an extra belt when I bought it, a powerlink 669 18.1 (I've heard 669 18.1 30 belts fit but its just says 669 18.1) belt and it seems kind of small, I can see from a leftover piece of shredded belt that the old one was a 669 18 30. Thanks in advance, sorry for all the questions, trying to avoid taking it to a shop.

You seem to know quite a bit. I have a 90cc atv with a similar clutch set up. Almost identical actually. As far as i know its all original. Some times it takes off aggressively and other times its real boggy and hard to get going. It can't even get its self up a small incline. My roller weights dont have any flat spots at all. The variator seems to work when i have the wheels off the ground but when riding the variator hardly raises the belt up at all. Now looking at the clutch its self all the springs seem to be good and strong. The clutch bell is purple and blue due to heat. Im insure what to do from here. I did notice the shaft that the clutch slides on has side to side play could that be a issue?
@49ccscoot
@49ccscoot 4 года назад
Play in the primary drive shaft (what the clutch and rear pulley are on) is unfortunately normal. If it is excessive, the bearing in the gearbox should be replaced. Have you gone over the whole CVT to make sure all looks well in the torque driver as well? Could be the contra spring needing replacement. Sometimes what happens in that case is that it will fade bad, so it runs OK when the CVT is cool and then it heats up and RPM drops. Could also be totally unrelated to the CVT. Mixture problems, compression, failing ignition.

hey there, ive got a 150cc gy6 scooter and when i pulled the cvt cover off the belt was very tight around the clutch and variator, the bike used to do around 60mph now it does half that, could this be the reason? Thank and great video by the way!
@49ccscoot
@49ccscoot 9 лет назад
Jack Shane Tension on the belt is normal. It should be sitting near the center of the front pulley and near the outside of the rear pulley when at rest. With a big loss in speed I would suggest considering other symptoms such as has RPM increased, has overall power decreased, noises, etc... An inspection of the CVT is never really a bad idea. Compression test may be helpful.

Thanks for your videos.factory belt broke on my jiajue 49cc with only about 942 miles . 669- 18-30 . Belt was a gates belt . found 3 of the 6 weights in sideways . cleaned it. Replaced belt . only thing ive lost about 4mph on top speed . pulks fron stop takes off better . on downgrades its much faster and engine doesnt whine like before . did weights cause belt to break? Any thoughts be apreciated . have no idea weight size . thanks
@49ccscoot
@49ccscoot 5 лет назад
Weights could have been displaced when the belt broke. Pretty common because the variator can be free to move more than usual and rollers have space to move around. Maybe RPM at speed was a little different with the old belt and it liked that better?

@@49ccscoot dont know . At about with 200 miles on odometer i noticed it started to have a higher top speed. Before new belt it would do about 40mph down hill but the engine was reall whining . Now downhill it will do almost 50mph no engine whine . pulling out from stop is better and it makes you think it will get going pretty fast . but at about 30 mph on level thats it . Im going to get a carb and some 7g weights . cold temps here get in way of a lot . thanks .

Hi, I have a question about all the springs, what do they do and what is the best for performance for a 50cc moped, I'm a little confused on which ones I should use for the best performance
@49ccscoot
@49ccscoot 8 лет назад
The small springs in the clutch are clutch springs. They control the engagement of the clutch. The large spring in the rear pulley is the contra srping. It keeps some tension on the belt and, in conjuction with roller weights, changes how the CVT "shifts" or changes ratios. Go to the CVT section here for more help : www.49ccscoot.com/faq/faq.html

Awesome! My wife's scooter died, and it turned out to be the drive belt was completely toasted. It was a mess in there, but with this video, I was able to get in, take it all apart, clean things up and get her back on the road! Thanks for sharing!! Respect!

Hey man, i'm really unlucky since my GY6 threads on the lower bolt that the variator tool would fit on is stripped and filled with high head expoxy since the hole went straight in the the engine and would eventually leak from the hole, so i thought about using an Electric impact gun for the variator nut, only problem is i cant find 30ft lbs torque sticks, I can only find 65lbs as the lowest, which i know is too much.. So if i would turn the nut on by hand as much i could on the variator, then hit it briefly with the impact (not holding the trigger down for more than a split second) could that be sulution to get the variator off and on safely?
@49ccscoot
@49ccscoot 10 лет назад
Not a great long term solution if it's a powerful impact. I think a lot of ppl do that with the electric impacts and learn how many bumps to give it. www.torquestick.com/cart/30ft-lb-TORQUE-STICK-EXTENSION-BAR-Black.html

I know it's not really great but i just wanted to get the rollers out and mix with a roller tune set with different rollers to get better acceleration and change belts in the future, tho, i wounder, if i use my screwdriver/electril portable drill with a adapter for 1/2 maybe that could work or it would probably just spin the engine around right? The impact's 450 NM, 1010W, 2200RPM, tho the quick buzz with torquing the nut down could work atleast, right? or should i wait untill i can somehow accuire an torque stick of 30ft-lb?? also regardign the shipping on that torque stick is 75$ to sweden, haha.. wow.. maybe a tad bit expensive for just a somewhat light and small stick of metal, haha.
@49ccscoot
@49ccscoot 10 лет назад
The drill will just turn the engine and prob not enough torque to secure it properly. You can do it without the torque stick. I used to.. but then I stripped a few cranks and quit it. Honestly though I tune so much it's not like I installed the nut a couple of times and it stripped (it could if you really overdo it I'm sure). I had done LOTS of tuning to any of the engines that stripped so the vari was on and off constantly.
@ErmaTheKitteh
@ErmaTheKitteh 10 лет назад
I hopefully will not strip the nut/threats since i really will only be taking off the vaiator when im gonna change weights to get better acceleration or such.
@ErmaTheKitteh
@ErmaTheKitteh 10 лет назад
Could the 65ft lb torque stick be a somewhat of a comferting factor when i reinstall the nut or would it be a stupid idea? it would prevent too much overtorquing but i dunno how much you can really go before messing up the threads..

You'd be better off to post on the forum at 49ccscoot.com. I don't know a lot about Rucks specifically, but someone on there should be able to help you if it's not a general enough question regarding the CVT.

hello all.i have a 2008 il bello 150 flyscooter that has had recent work done (new belt 5 months ago and is now making vibrating noises at around 30-35mph..i can feel it in the seat and it it makes a humming whummmm whummm whumm whumm like its "winding out" no performance loss just noisey!...could the variator be shot or rollers worn out? they were replaced a few years ago prior to the belt being repalced. also, what is standard roller measurement and weight?
@49ccscoot
@49ccscoot 9 лет назад
+Mike Horvath Could be a tire/wheel balance issue. Could be something in the CVT. Could be a bearing or something bent. You'll need to do some inspecting.

Nice job, I've used a HF oil filter wrench to hold the variator in place on my 4 strokes. They have one that locks like vice grips too.

Yeah. They don't need to be anywhere near polished. That could actually be bad. Something like 220 grit.

so i am assuming that a longer belt would give you more topspeed?
@49ccscoot
@49ccscoot 2 года назад
Maybe. Maybe not. Depends if it needs/can use a longer belt, if the power is there to go faster and things like that. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-HNLSiyxdNww.html

If I was to remove the restriction from the clutch/variator would it get more top speed or faster take off ?
@49ccscoot
@49ccscoot 7 лет назад
Depends on the scoot. I did it with a stock 1E40QMB 2T and it took off slower and didn't go any faster, because it squeezed the belt up higher in the front pulley and it lost the best takeoff gearing. and the engine didn't have enough power to pull me faster than I was going with the washer in place. You can try it and put it back if it doesn't work as long as it's nothing that has to be ground out or broken.

Well it was running fine til other day I was at 45mph and it backfired and bogged all way down. Now it will only let me give it little throttle go up to 10mph any more throttle and it cuts off. It idles perfect. Thank u for your response

Hi, i think I have the same engine on my scooter but I cant find anything on internet about that engine (service manual etc.), one thing that I know is that from factory it has 80cc and little larger shaft of the crankshaft on the clutch side so when I tryed to upgrade transsmision it couldnt fit because it was smaller. Do you know any site where I can find more informations? And sorry for bad english
