Watching the pinball detective is always lots of fun….The multi-players sure have a lot more to work through when they don’t work as they should. But as usual, you got it worked out. The troubleshooting vids are my 2nd favourite vids, the favourite being when you clean and deal with the playfield. Thanks for posting Ronnie.

This was unbelievably helpful. I have the same machine. It works pretty well but sometimes has issues with two player games not cycling to the second player. Occasionally the spinners don’t work. This gives me enormous insight on how to better follow the schematics and understand how my machine operates. Thanks so much!

A nice additional schematic tutorial. Thanks, working on my daughter’s Grand Prix this week. This helps.
@LyonsArcade

Notice how the end of the ball is actually controlled by the bonus units, Grand Prix works the same with with that 0 position switch that opens and closes, you'll see when you get into it. Same exact bonus unit too, there's just two identical ones on Grand Prix and each ball it changes back and forth. You've got your work cut out for you, Grand Prix was the most complicated one I've worked on!

Hmmm, its on player 1 ball 1 pressing start button doesn’t move to two player game? Playfield is removed. Can’t find start button on schematic. Yikes.

Pure Logic...I love how mechanical switches operate in pinball machines...so simple...although of course exactly the same principle in microchips today...but nowadays if a single switch in a silicon microchip is broken we bin/replace millions of switches in one go.

Yes I've been trying to explain to people that they're almost identical to how modern PCB's work it's just all condensed into one chip. It's all 0's and 1's!

When the Pilgrims came over they started a communist villiage and half the free loaders wouldn't work so they about starved to death. The Natives taught them how to hunt and fish, etc. but half of the Pilgrims wouldn't work, because that's what Communism is all about. They eventually divided the property up into a more democratic system where you work your own land and prospered, they had made peace with the Natives and invited them over to have a big party to thank God for bringing them all prosperity, food and a new land. Later down the line we killed all the Natives and took their land. Here's a story about it from Rush - officialrushlimbaugh.com/the-true-story-of-thanksgiving/ And here's a story about Osceola, years later, who was imprisoned and was involved with the loss of Florida, the whole country was stolen in big swatches. Hey Ron, enjoying the videos so far, I picked up a Prospector machine back in March and just finished getting it all up and running. Fast and fun game. My machine has the gate at the top left. Gate does not allow the ball to go in. There is another way the ball can get in there and then it shoots out through the gate which is the way I believe it is supposed to be. My right flipper the has the sonic emblem and the left one is Williams, don’t know if it’s a coincidence or that’s just what they did. Most of my machine light sockets needed a jumper wire soldered to them to make them reliable, mostly the bonus light sockets. Don’t know if you’re gonna run into the same problem on yours. The play field cleaned up like new. Looking forward to see how your machine turns out. Paul. From Brooklyn

@LyonsArcade
@LyonsArcade Год назад

@AllanSitte
@AllanSitte Год назад
Thank you for this Ron. Great work as always. Question: At the top of the play field there is that chute on the left side that is catching the ball after you fire the ball to start a turn. It seems that there might be a missing "one way gate" at the top of that chute that is meant to prevents the ball going into that chute from the top side. What do you think? The reason I mention this that is that there is a substantive metal bracket there at the top of the left hand chute. I have seen games where people would remove a one way gate to "cheat" the game scoring mechanics that a gate would prevent/manage. Gates where the ball may be moving at a high rate of speed would often be contained in a bracket of heavier metal to handle the forces of a fast moving pinball. Maybe I am wrong. Just seemed odd that they would put a heavier metal bracket on that left hand chute. Could be that it adds strength to the bumpers in that section of the playfield.
@LyonsArcade
@LyonsArcade Год назад
I thought it was designed like that but there's a gate up there that's stuck open!

Since you have many years of experience and have certainly seen a lot, I would ask you for your opinion. I found an old EM from Gottlieb behind a lot of junk in my grandparents basement. Due to long, miserable storage and an open back box, a lot has already become moldy, especially the cable insulation, wood, coil paper... covered with white fluff/powder from mold or black spots. Would you rather advise throwing the whole thing away - especially from a health point of view - or should something like this still be saved? Thanks!
@LyonsArcade
@LyonsArcade Год назад
By 'covered' do you mean, like you can't see through it, or you see spots all over the place? I'd probably save it personally but i'm much more tolerant of that stuff than a lot of people, might not be a good idea.
@waynegram8907
@waynegram8907 Год назад
Joe's classic, any reason why the index relay coil is called the index cuz I'm not sure what it's indexing or what it's referring to as the index? It's just weird how the the relay blades it was connecting through half of the the turn of the score motor wheel but at that last point it was opening the contacts for some reason it just seems kind of weird how it would make it through the other portion of the wheel and just at that last part it was opening the contacts it just doesn't make sense that's just so weird and then I was throwing off the whole game from that.
@LyonsArcade
@LyonsArcade Год назад
By "Index" they mean that's where it starts, so for instance if you read the index of a book, it tells you what page everything else is on... you start looking there. So that cam is called the Index, because when it gets to that dip you're talking about in the wheel, that is the starting point... so it turns around until that point, and stops. It does this so that it always starts in the same place, that's why they call it the Index. Thank you for watching Wayne, happy Thanksgiving!
@waynegram8907
@waynegram8907 Год назад
@@LyonsArcade Thanks, I didn't know that the Index CAM is the starting point that all other relays/coils are "referenced" off of the index CAM and Index relays/coils

Hi Ron! A question concerning the score motor cams; Now, I could be mistaken (It happens quite a bit), but the cams appear to be made of the same sort of nylon plastic that was used in the Chicago Coin machines. If this is the case, are the Sonic cams susceptible to the same sort of damage due to time (becoming brittle) as the Chicago Coin cams? Or is this less of an issue due to different material/manufacturing, or possibly orientation (horizontal vs. vertical)? Also, the limited research I've been able to do on the Chicago Coin machines appears to indicate that the same cams were used over and over in the Chicago Coin line (less than 10 overall, which makes sense, rather than pay for the tooling for unique cams for different machines). How many cams on the score motor stack for this machine, and does that appear consistent with other Sonic Machines?
@LyonsArcade
@LyonsArcade Год назад
On these it's never a problem because of the way the cams are bolted on... on the Chicago Coin ones the hub holds everything and the upper cams are just screwed to the bottom cam, you never have a problem with anything but the hub. This cam system was used by Williams and Bally and doesn't really have any problems even though they're nylon. Yes on the Chicago Coin ones they changed a couple times but were used for many machines before they changed slightly, probably because the games got more complex as time went on and they needed a slightly different cam. I think this score motor has an Index, a "Long Dwell", a Impulse, another Impulse, and 5 position cams, so 9? Very complex game!
