William Schuman's 'George Washington Bridge' was premiered on July 30th, 1950 by the Michigan All-Star Band, conducted by Dale Harris, at the Interlochen Summer Music Camp. 68 years later this piece is a integral part of the wind band repertoire not only because of the quality of the work but the importance of having one of the nation's most prominent composers (and then president of Julliard) write for the medium. He is one of many composers who helped legitimize the band with a substantial musical contribution.
