Thank you for doing this! Even as a (sort of) beginner, I am very process oriented. I can' shoot full time, as I'm on my way to graduating school. But I still shoot often. Without a teacher, I've been struggling to figure out the process. So watching you work through your struggle, and sharing your method of thought is a rare, and wonderful gift! Thanks so much for being a great teacher!

Jake, loved hearing about how you plan on working through problems. Knowing more about how you approach "exploratory" practice(trying new techniques, looking for the right things to focus on mentally, etc.) in a productive way, followed by the process you described for thoughtfully and patiently applying it to shooting/scoring at distance would be super helpful!

Youre description of where you're at with the shot fits with so many barebow shooters, myself included. I appreciate the candor and openness. For me, blank bale never helped much because my issue was based in aiming...I can connect fine to a shot until the target's up. One thing a friend recommended was shooting JUST the center of a target, which eliminates other distraction and other aiming references in shooting. It works for me, but I have to re-up with it to keep it fresh.

Great to hear some advice on the order of events when facing challenges - so often in archery we concentrate on one thing while failing to not pay enough attention to another and it becomes a mental whirlpool. Absolutely love these videos where you shoot a round and do a commentary on whats going on. So useful to me anyway. I'm considering going down the fat arrow rabbit hole but so far have kept it AS SIMPLE AS POSSIBLE. ie same thin arrows I use for indoor recurve that I know are tuned for 18m with a reasonable string walk......I am SO glad I don't need a psyche trigger: I imagine my forefinger touching the back of my neck and twong, there it goes! Usually! Huge thanks again for all your content. Would love another round with commentary after you've worked on those issues. I'm guessing you'd benefit just from shooting lots of arrows. Looked quite shakey at times. Hilarious btw that I.m trying to give you advise!!!

Jake nice video & insight. Reinforces what I have been doing for 3 years to overcome target panic. Progressed far with blank bail mostly a non issue. With a target my last step is conquering consistent expansion within 3-4 sec . FYI I shoot a compound bow w a draw check & finger release. Further tips on training what’s between the ears to execute a shot process ones hung up on would be helpful. Thank You again

I suffered it shooting compound, switched to barebow, had no issues, started scoring well, hey presto, TP reared it’s ugly head again🙄🤨. I’ve been using 400 spine Easton triumphs with 200g points and 5 inch feathers, from 45# at fingers. When I’m not in TP mode, they work great at 18 and 30 metres

Only got one arrow set Wich is a 300 spine brux (23), with 150 grnpoints. Biggest improvement so far was lowering anchor point so it's closer to a recurve one. Might try a heavy set of x23 at some point. Biggest issue for indoor season is the lack of practice due to work and club hours overlapping Wich makes indoor season basically astra season 🤣.

I've been happy with my x23-14s and 180 grs points with my recurve (31.5-inch arrow length and 40 pounds). The flight is relatively slow with the feathers I've put on but they straighten up quickly! I've tried outdoor arrows and 2114s (recommended by Easton) but I tend to get more flighers with those faster setups. My mental game has to catch up these days. I was usually shooting 260-270s and this year has been a bit of a breakthrough. I'm now shooting low 280s on bad days and into the 290s when everything goes smoothly. Last weekend, for example, during the second half of my WA round, I was losing focus when expanding, which cost me about half a dozen points. Any exercises you could provide to help keep focus throughout?

I will tell you an experience of mine, i was a sportsman too, i practiced taekwondo for 9 years or smth, before i broke a ligament in my knee. And one time i was in final for the national championship. There was like 15 minutes before my fight. My master, my team, my family and hundreds of people watching me, i felt like throwing up, i pee like every 2 minutes, i was so scared not to disappoint everyone, i fought all day to get there and just the fact that that was the last match the preassure was so big the only thing i could think of was what excuse to make to quit that fight. Then one of the trainers come to lead me to the ring, and as i started to walk towards it i knew that's it, i can't go back now. And in those seconds, i said fk it! If i lose this at least i get rid of this horrible feeling, i just didn't care anymore. And i won... I realised that day that the biggest enemy is not my opponent but my own mind. Sometimes the more you try to control your mind the worse you'll feel. I think you should relax, first get a feel of the arrows and bow so you can release faster, it seems to me you try to control your shoots too much. I think you should give your brain a chance to memorize the bow and arrows, and also you should put numbers on the arrows to make sure some arrow is not weird. And after you feel relaxed with that try to aim for score. Also, taking breaks from sport makes a huge difference, is normal. And who knows, you may never hit the performance you once did, this is something every athlete must learn to let go.

Have you heard of the psychoactive trigger by way of the feathers on the arrow? It may be another way for you to achieve that clicker like response as opposed to the grip sear. The trigger being the feather brushing against your nose or face while you continue pulling back through the shot. My thinking as far as alignment goes using a grip sear puts a lot of good attention and focus away from the arrow. I have never tried a grip sear method so I can only speculate. However, I can imagine it's incredibly difficult to get away from needing a trigger while simultaneously aiming from the point of the arrow. On another note, would be great to see you at Lancaster! Hope you get there as your schedule and training permit. I'm sure you'd make it past the first round with ease once you get your mind set to it.

I’ve gone back and forth on indoor arrow setups. I shot my first really solid (270+) score with full length (31”) Victory VAPs. The smaller arrow does allow for more precise aiming, and can help you feel more comfortable floating in the yellow, since your float can stay in the yellow. I’ve shot my personal best FITA with CX Maxima Pro Recurve RZs. They’re just a very forgiving arrow. I’m not sure if this was shot with cut down 580s or full length 420s (my notes are unclear). I’ve shot my highest average, and my best Lancaster round with light weight 23s similar to the ones you’re shooting here, but they were 33” long. They don’t hit the 10 more often, but they’re way more likely to be an X when they do. Heavy aluminum arrows were too unforgiving of tension loss. I shot some really high scores, but if I was off I was really off. If I’m being honest, I really think reducing your bow weight even further would help with your target panic. Most people aren’t shooting more than 38# indoors. This allows for smaller crawls while still pulling the string off the finger cleanly. The less tension reduces the feeling of building pressure when you’re trying to hold on the target.

@@typhoon2827 Kind of, but not really. Adjusting your tiller like that is the same as moving your nocking point higher: it will make the arrow impact lower and thus reduce your crawls, but it will change the way the bow holds and the way your arrows tune.

Before you mentioned it, it was very clear that your TP and psycho/pseudo trigger are holding you back from a great potential. You seem to have a totally defeatist attitude about overcoming this. The vast majority of archers throughout history have shot without a clicker/trigger. You can change your mental control of the shot process and release. It will take time and work but starts with confidence and willingness to change. Good luck. Sooner or later, you will be consistently in the winners circle.
@JakeKaminskiArchery
@JakeKaminskiArchery Год назад
I hear you, but I’ve never seen a clear explanation of a “triggerless” shot that I, a person of an analytical mindset can wrap my head around. Until I do, I’ll continue to trudge through the hard work that is required (it was also required on recurve) to become proficient with the sear method. If you have a resource to recommend, I’ll check it out.

@@JakeKaminskiArchery I returned to archery several years ago and was quickly reminded that I had developed TP partly due to shooting a bow weight that was too heavy for me. I spent hours and hours shooting several times a week working on overcoming this. This is the wrong format for a detailed discussion. Very briefly, two techniques worked for me. First was aim, letdown, aim, letdown. I did this drill a great many times, end after end, typically when also using an Astra shot trainer. I have also used a conscious release mnemonic. I achieve aim and then consciously tell myself "aim, 1, 2, 3, release". There are lots of other methods. As an analytical person I am sure you can find one that will work for you, but none may be quick. At least you don't have a snap shooting issue. You just have to overcome years of relying on a clicker. The big issue is to break the connection between the subconscious processes and make the release a conscious process. I think you will find you have no choice but to resolve this issue and your efforts to find a clicker substitute will be wasted effort. At least that is my guess. BTW, I have spent a great deal of time looking at your videos on form and they have really helped me. Thanks much
@massiveCheese
@massiveCheese Год назад
@@JakeKaminskiArchery I shot reasonably, but always with target panic so I could never get to my potential. I just could not get on with the sears at all. The thing that started to help me on my way - there is more work to do - was Jes Lysgaard's method.
@JakeKaminskiArchery
@JakeKaminskiArchery Год назад
Background: I switched to recurve after developing TP with a compound and a finger trigger. Counting 1,2,3 for me Won’t work, I’ll speed up the 123 and eventually just release on 1. Releasing with a conscience process is fine when no target is involved. The issue is when a target is there, if I have any intention of releasing, I can’t aim and “freeze” off target. Drive bys then happen. With no intention of releasing doing “draw holds” I have literally zero anxiety or issues. I can hold and aim comfortably all day long at any draw length. Add in the intention to actually let go and it all goes out the window. Joel Turner and the shot IQ cleanly explain this issue and imho is the only way forward that I can see at this time. I wish it was different
@jameskelson1891
@jameskelson1891 Год назад
I don't know how long you tried using 123 and any other technique to break TP. It took me a long time, like 2 years shooting and working on TP at least a couple of sessions a week. I used a variety of techniques and that was the only shooting I did. It is great to have that monkey off my back but it did not come easily. I certainly agree aiming is a part of the TP issue. That is why I found the Astra trainer helpful. I could work my process, including the release, but since the arrow went nowhere, the aiming issue abated. I am a high tech, analytical person. Having my subconscious inflict me with TP was more than my ego could take. Another matter of pride was shooting with friends who had control over their shot process when I couldn't. Anyway, positive thinking will lead the way. I AM capable and in control.
