"If you got a carrot and paint it green, it wouldn't make it a cucumber." As a non native english speaker, I am considering to add this to my repertoire and use it all the time.
Ha! Add to the phrase book - yo never know when it'll come in handy. Some crucial EU Brexit negotiation and silence falls across the room. The you chip that in...
I still have nightmares from time to time about playing a piece for the Clarinet that went without breathing. When parts were in unison myself and a couple of the other clarinetists would secretly mark out the notes each of us would skip to breathe so we didn't drop out of the score completely at the same time.
Not sure if it was a Guy quote on another video or someone else - but I remember the hint of "when playing wind instruments on a keyboard, take a deep breath and slowly blow all the air from your lungs and then release the note". A good wind player will be able to blow longer/harder than us non-players but it means we're not playing things beyond what a good player can actually play!
@@ThinkSpaceEducation You are perfect as an instructor. I'm honored to have discovered you on RU-vid. You fill my mind with endless possibilities when it comes to composing!
@@ThinkSpaceEducation your videos are absolute delight , guy , thank you so much for this content , i feel like every time i m watching your vids i am more and more enthused and go on and compose ! thank you so much!
"This is such a long video, oh god!" DON'T WORRY ABOUT THAT. I watch your videos every morning with my cup of coffee, and to be honest I love it when the videos run a bit long. It's one of the main ways I "decompress" before I get to work.
I loved that you were conducting behind your desk while the virtual orchestra was playing. I also do this, and I always feel like a crazy person. Good to know I'm not alone, hahaha
George, Guy is a delight to watch and to listen to. Hans.... my god. I can't stand listening to him. Nor looking at. HE got a great deal, did write some good music, had good push from whatever, took the right advantage of the opportunity. And that's it.
To give you a time-stamp i’d have to either watch or skip through the video, again, just to find the place. So perhaps you might look for yourself. I’d recommend watching the whole video, though 👍🏻
Omg the layering thing with the shorts and longs. Genius. I’ve been trying to get that attack out of my long lines for a couple of years now. Thank you
Thank you for your honesty in composing and being unafraid to show us the missed notes, the chord exploration, and the constant refinement of ideas of varying levels of 'goodness' until we arrive at something that really works.
I love your 'warts'n all' style of videos. It's nice seeing you tinker around and questioning yourself whilst also showing us the mistakes as it's all part of the process
I love “that’ll do”! 😆 It’s great to know that a composer like yourself can be so ‘random’ and ‘trial and error’ as we rock musicians! Honestly, it’s made my day!
I love this guy! No garish splash page/thumbnail, no annoying two-tier ads up front, no begging to subscribe or hype, he just jumps right into the subject and away we go learning. I'm a first-time viewer, a novice orchestrator and thanks to Guy, I'm a new fan of his. Anyone else?
Such an emotional composition - it beautifully tells the tragic tale of father; dehydrated; needing only the nourishment and warmth from a cup of tea, yet betrayed by his offspring
Guy, I’ve been an owner of the “Pro” version of BBC SO since the pre-order and this was STILL beneficial to demonstrate how little you really need to make great music! Thank you!
I just got mine copy yesterday, thank you cut this, for hours to write music which I also bought as only online class ever and its pretty good so far, you have charming personality that resonates well with what you teach. I never would though of myself as being able to event start comprehend orchestral music as only played guitar before. You and Adam Neely pushed me to start going into music after work, buy a DAW and have fun with music, and also to understand it. You opened while new world for me and for this and delightful entertainment I thank you very much, you are wonderful human. Please never change that :)
Hi Guy! You should not be too worried about the lenght of the video. I could sit here for hours to see your workflow and to hear your piece come together. Amazing! It's much more educational, funny and satisfying than you might think. Thank you for your time and effort that you put in to these videos. And thank you for sharing your experience and expertise.
Can we take a second to appreciate the studio and it's surroundings completely is sync with nature, blending like a beautiful orchestra .. This man takes a lot of inspiration from nature for sure.. Wonderful!!!
I've been a full time producer and composer for three decades and i've never seen so much useful information in one hour or in one place EVER. I'm actually a superfan now. i will be experimenting with this template. I'm having spats with logic and protools lately and feel like cubase might be the next era. This is an astounding display of creative and educational expertise shared with humility and taste. I can't tell you how rare all that is . I'm a canadian working in west hollywood. i don't need to say much more. :) bravo maestro and thrilled and honored to meet you. AJR
Man...I just downloaded this and am completely in awe. I have all the LABS stuff as well and I honestly think Spitfire is the best company out there for free plugins. Great sounds and customer service. Very clever people as now I feel I owe them...nice. And then there's Guy. What an inspiration you are! These are truly amazing times for musicians wanting to get into composing. I mean free DAWs, free instruments, effects and libraries like this and free instruction to boot! No more excuses now, buddy!
Guy you madlad. I was looking for a video like this from someone using the free version of the orchestral library all morning, good job at getting to the punch first!
Just found this gem, I've been using notation software to compose but was unsatisfied with the sound, this is a great tutorial for how to use a daw to compose.
Suggestion for a course that I would like to see: String arrangement and production for pop and rock music. I think there could be a lot of guys like me who like orchestral elements, but don’t intend to become a media composer or do full orchestral scoring. I mostly do singer-songwriter stuff myself and have tried doing a string arrangement to a song once, but without prior knowledge it was a pita and took ages. So a short course on how to arrange strings in a song context , how to make them halfway decent with MIDI and mix them would be great. I’d buy that immediately. And if that works out, why not continue with brass for funk/soul or woodwinds for , eh, folk? As far as I can see that is a niche in the market that hasn’t been occupied, at least I haven’t found anything. Most orchestral course are overkill for me.
Being in the same boat as you, (I produce mostly singer/songwriter etc) I would definitely find some value in a course like that! But in the meantime try using the same techniques but applied to the more conventional chord progressions of pop music. And maybe lean a bit less on some of the more orchestral elements. Perhaps trying Mellotron strings in place of ‘real’ ones, and glocks/Rhodes/synth plucks in place of some more percussive orchestra sounds.
I love that you posted this. Not only because It inspired me to immediately shoot over to spitfire and pick this up, but because we ALL have these days where we've got the big picture worked out in our head and silly little things keep tripping us up. Namely for me, my sub-par keyboard skills being a professional guitar player, vocalist and even session drummer, but NOT so much a keyboardist.
Thank you ever so much, Guy, I enjoyed every minute of it! 😀 My goodness, this Library sounds absolutely amazing! Hard to believe you can get this for free. It's a must-have. And thanks very much indeed for the free template! 🙌🙏 Stay healthy!!
The basis of incredible things is often passion (and then hard work). That passion of you is contagious dear sir! What an enthousiast and excellent teacher are you! Thanks for your vids!
I started diving into MIDI orchestration a few weeks ago and I'm happy to discover that some layouting techniques I started using are the same explained in the video. Then I'm not that dumb and noob. Anyways this video is definitely good and useful.
@Wilfred Design I'm in the waiting period as well, 5 days left. You may as well wait, at least then you can know for definite and you can always buy it later. There's no need to jump the gun for this short of a waiting period.
There's probably a registry key somewhere it added when you install it (assuming it comes with an installer) that keeps track of when you started using it that you could try to find and modify use it longer while you try to figure out whether or not you want to pay for it or not, probably not the most legal but definitely pragmatic especially if you dont have much time to use it during the initial waiting period :)
Watching this guy (Guy) compose and orchestrate is a real joy. Rather than an expertly polished edit, we get to see how he really thinks and works in real time. This is priceless for us composers.
@@ThinkSpaceEducation OMG I've just clocked - was your Dad Cliff Michelmore? Wow, amazing man. This video is fantastic, thoroughly enjoying it. Thank you.
I have watched some videoes using this free library and you blew the others away! Conclusion: it is not the tools, it is the man using them! I love this video!
Wow! Great vid. Opened my eyes to a form of composition, I have always been curious about. I make EDM, but I think some of these techniques can be applied to making more interesting floor bangers.
1 minute into the video and you get the energy you can conquer the world with your music Made my day, 27:54 - 28:30 basically describes my whole life! I've been using this library since my early studying days and still do. I love it and I want to say a million thanks for making this.
I subscribed after 5 min. The reason is your energy you created for me. There's one principle I'm trying to follow is to answer the question: "what kind of energy I want to transfer to the one who interacts with me?". And if I can describe it, it would be yours: stimulating, sincere, passionate, fun. You're my new mentor from now on. Keep posting new content. Cheers.
Just got this library and felt a little overwhelmed by all it could do, so this tutorial is very inspiring for me to just create a bunch of tracks and make something!
I got my "own" BBCSO one week ago and it's the first orchestral sample library I use. And there are so many new possibilities for me! It's great! ... and btw. Your Videos are very inspiring for me! I like they very much!
Great video. I'm one of those weirdos who is about to start writing projects in electronic music and heavy metal and . . . writing a symphony. So this was extremely useful.
You could assign different CC values to your switches (volume being CC11). This is how you do it on Logic Pro: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-yfZO7faM8Eo.html
Always such a joy to watch and listen to a new Guy’s inspirational video! This orchestral library is definitely a huge gift for all of is creative people! 😍🎹🎵
Sharing this knowledge for young aspiring producers/composers, thank you ever so much. I dream of producing music for a living, and eventhough I'm making baby steps, your videos enriches my mind and opens the amount of possibilities that await me!

Absolutely fascinating watching and listening to you going through the creative process. I really enjoy this. Makes me feel not quite so self-deprecating about my own efforts! Seriously, though, very, very interesting. Scoring for orchestra has always terrified me, but I've always wanted to give it a go and have faffed around the edges for ages (scoring for simple piano and strings). I would love to see more videos like this - you have such a winning personality! Your humour and explanations make it very engaging! I could happily watch another four hours of this. Thanks so much!
I hear the frustration in your voice as you work, but please know that I've learned so much more from you than I have from Hans Zimmer. Zimmer is great, don't get me wrong, but I love that you're toughing it out, and even being silly along the way which is how I work too! I don't feel so bad for how I work now, and I'm all the more inspired to keep going :) Thanks Guy!
