Concert: Charms of Nanyang

Inspiration came from the preliminary ceremony of Malay Shadow Play (Wayang Kulit) - Buka Panggung (Opening of the Stage). The ‘buka panggung’ begins as a bit of cooked rice is smeared on each of the instruments and a small amount of water is placed inside each of the large, hanging gongs. In addition, incense is burned in a small receptable and passed among all the musical instruments and puppets. This ritual is carried out by ‘dalang’ for the purpose of purifying the area where the shadow play will be performed. This work was awarded the 3rd prize of Composition Award in International Competition for Chinese Orchestral Composition 2006.

作品的灵感取自马来皮影戏的开场仪式。开场仪式是把少量的米饭涂抹在每个乐器上，并把少量的水斟入每一个吊挂着的大锣。除此，燃烧着香料的小香炉也会在乐器与皮影木偶间转递。整个仪式由傀儡木偶大师“达郎”主持，目的是为了净化表演皮影戏的场地。此曲于2006新加坡华乐团国际华乐作曲大赛荣获创作大奖三奖 。
