This piece should be better considering the composer is Wang. The instrumentation can’t really showcase the atmosphere this music brings, especially in Wind instruments. Besides Strings (Erhu family) are always bit too weak in this musical context, they deserve good melody writing, not those chromatic notes with chaos. Also some sections sounds terrifying, majestic, but lack depth. This piece bears good musical intentions but yet to be technically refine.
90 mins well rewarded watching this; what a stupendous production; the singer, the musicians, the choruses, the conductor, even the mood lighting, the mural/calligraphy on the backdrop, the lone commentor - everything so well executed. Wish I was there!!
《二泉映月》in this arrangement the erhu soloist was allowed to play alone, to develop the theme; then later on the full orchestra comes on. i like it that the sadness of this tune was conveyed in this arrangement.
what a proud moment for the SCO with Maestro Yeh Tsung; to have delivered such an inspiring uplifting performance in a specific sub-genre of Chinese Opera (always difficult, I think)..
