It's time for my annual scotch whisky gift recommendations, and in this video I'm recommending whiskies that should be available at your local liquor or whisky shop, without having to travel too far out of your way. To prepare this list, I went out to local shops and had friends check the inventory at stores in their areas as well, to get a feel for what bottles you'll actually find available to buy. Then: I made a pick from the whiskies available at these types of shops of 1 peated and 1 un-peated whisky in each price category I'd actually buy or recommend.

Nice choices, but a bit Disgeo-heavy for my taste. I'm in Brooklyn, not known as a cheap place to shop, and I can find Ardbeg 5, which is no slouch, and The Mighty Craigellechie 13, both for under $50. For about $80, I can find Laphroaig 10 Cask Strength and for about $70, Glenmorangie Nectar d'Or. Around $90 I'm going with Ardbeg Uigeadail and Bunnahabhain 12 Cask Strength. At $100, I'm going with Laphroaig Cairdeas 2023 and....drum roll...Glen Moray 18. Under $120, Ledaig 1996 (19yo) and Aberfeldy 18 ✌️

I think this is a good list. At this time of year I often see silly lists of difficult to find whisky with the caveat "if you can't get that then get xyz" meaning you've given someone second choice. The comments will have complaints about LVMH, Pernod Ricard and Diageo but the whiskies on this list all have good distribution and at least one of them will be available to everyone with access to an off licence / liquor store. Not everyone has Daftmill and Springbank falling off the shelves in their local store.

The Classic Laddie is a great value at $60! Something i always have on the shelf. The only caution with it is that strength(some casuals could find it hot) and the prominence of the Laddie Lactic/butryic acid note, which I love but some find unbearable. Ardbeg 10 is a greatvshout at that price too as it's well over $110 in my market. Great video man! Cheers 🥃

Thanks! Good points. Doing these videos, you get an appreciation for how different prices get in different markets. Next time I want to complain about the price of whisky, I'll remind myself I can still get Ardbeg and Port Charlotte 10 years for less than $70 USD ...

At the $100 mark, I'd choose a Benromach 15.

That's a good choice, but not one that's available very reliably in ordinary shops in the US.

Not buying any chill filtered 43% ABV whiskies for $100 or $120. Many better choices for non-chill filtered whiskies at 46+% ABV at well below $100.

Feel free to do what you want, but The Online Whisky Litmus Test is not the be all and end all of whisky appreciation. Dogmatism is never a good thing.

I’m sad that so many on the list is from Diegeo or other poorly presented core ranges. Instead I’d make more effort and grab: Arran 10, Bunnahabhain 12, Ledaig 10, Glenallechie 12,10,15, Port Charlotte 10, Kilkerran 12, Compass Box Orchard House, Laphroiag Cask Strength.

Those are all really great whiskies... that aren't available in most local stores here in the US, so they weren't eligible for this year's gift list. Many of these appear on a lot of other lists on the channel. Check them out!
