Scotland's Most Remote Bothy? Overnight in Glenbeg Bothy. 🏚

Tucked away in a wild and lonely corner of Scotland, far from any road, Glenbeg Bothy is arguably Scotland's most remote bothy, requiring a long walk or cycle from any direction. In this video, join us on a fine hiking adventure to this secluded bothy in the middle of nowhere.
🗻 Mountain climbed: Beinn a'Chaisteil.
🏚 Bothy visited: Glenbeg (NM 313 834).
Sadly the future of Glenbeg Bothy remains uncertain. In April 2012 the adjacent bothy, a white corrugated-iron hut affectionately known to hikers as "The Greenhouse", was destroyed by fire which resulted in an acrimonious dispute between Inverlael Estate and the Mountain Bothy Association (MBA), unable to reach an agreement, the MBA decided to pull out.
Since then, Glenbeg Bothy has not been maintained, left vulnerable to the hostile environment. Research on the Internet threw up very few results of the current condition of the bothy, some vague reports suggested the roof was leaking and it was in a sorry state being only one bad storm away from a derelict state. What would we find on our arrival?

Good to see my campervan at the beginning, and my comments in the book. It was a lot better inside than I thought it would be, as there is not up to date information about. Shame I couldn't stop and meet you.

Hi Robin Had a couple of cycle trips up StrathVaich to bag Beinn a Chaisteil and another to remote Carn Ban when I camped at Loch Sruban Mora. I posted a video of that back in 2020. Never visited the bothy did not fancy the bog trot to get there. Managed 200th Corbett Buidhe Bheinn at week end only 22 to go probably take me 5 years if ever😂😂 Keep up the great videos ATB

Cheers Stripey, I wasn't happy with the fire logs, they used to be a £1 but they've increased to £1.50. Fair enough, but they're 250g lighter. Good for the pack weight, rubbish for the fire.

Nice one lads, enjoyed that. Super boggy hike to the bothy, but worth it for shelter and somewhere to have a nice fire after a day in the hills. Wrap's looked minging as always 😂😂 but the mac n' cheese with mash looked proper tasty. Great that a new bothy was built not far from the original one, after it was mysteriously burnt down - back in 2012 I think you wrote? I'd like to think it got struck by lightning and wasn't started by someone burning brooms and stuff 🙏🙏 atb DVS :)
@WalkWithWallace
@WalkWithWallace 9 месяцев назад
Haha cheers Donna, but you know you want to try a mackerel wrap. 😜 The MBA reckon it was a lightening strike but the estate say it was hikers, no evidence of either. I never got to see the iron clad but apparently it was nice and preferred to the old stone one we stayed in.

A great video, albeit a somewhat abrupt ending. As for the title's claim, may I humbly suggest: Tarf Hotel / Oban / Faindouran / Maol Buidhe / Cruib ??!! Worthy contenders all IMHO!!! Also, I noticed a Zoleo on your shoulder. Did you ever do a review of that? I think you had an InReach at some point too; how do compare / prefer them? Regards, Wadirunner
@WalkWithWallace
@WalkWithWallace 9 месяцев назад
Cheers mate, yeah I had an audio malfunction the next again day. The mic was facing the rear on the GoPro so my voice was muffled. 😔 It certainly makes a good debate around the bothy fire about the remotest bothy, Suppose it depends on how you measure it, by the way the crow flies from the nearest road or by the distance required to reach on foot, Glenbeg is certainly a contender, but you've played some aces there. 😁 I've not reviewed the Zoleo yet, but I feel I've had enough use out of it now to make a review, so it's on the growing list. Any questions about it in the meantime, fire away.
@wadirunner
@wadirunner 9 месяцев назад
Ha ha. Aces high is the best poker hand. Yeah, sounds like it'd make for a great bothy fire chat. Could terrain toughness be added to that criteria list. The Zoleo is a possible Xmas present to myself, after a recent trip to Cruib, some sort of satellite communicator could be very useful. I'll look forward to your review. Cheers, Wadi.
@WalkWithWallace
@WalkWithWallace 9 месяцев назад
The terrain definitely needs factored into the debate. 😁 Tbh the Zoleo and inReach pretty much do the exact same thing. I prefer the app with the Zoleo but it probably comes down to budget comparing their monthly plans against each other. Is Cruib on Jura? The only bothy I've not been to in your aces. 🃏 Lol

has anyone anywhere thought of doing a decent book about the Bothies of Scotland, Wales and England? In fact are there any bothies in Ireland?
@WalkWithWallace
@WalkWithWallace 4 месяца назад
There’s the Bothy Bible, but that only covers Scottish Bothies and it proved a bit controversial as people felt he was making money off the back of a charity who maintains them and volunteers who have put a lot of time in to keep these places habitable. I imagine there will be bothies in Ireland, but not MBA .
