Scotland's #TreeOfTheYear 2020 - The Survivor Tree, Carrifran Valley.
It was once a lone rowan clinging to a stream bank in Carrifran Valley, but today that survivor tree is lonely no more! It is surrounded by a little forest of its children, and lots of suckers are coming up from its base. This was some of the first natural regeneration the Borders Forest Trust achieved in the Carrifran Valley. In addition to its own children, the rowan tree now has over half a million other native Scottish trees for company. Where once it dominated the view, it will soon be hidden from sight. The rowan tree no longer stands alone and is a symbol of the 20-year journey to revive the wild heart of Southern Scotland.

I am absolutely inspired by the Scottish folks that have taken the Carrifran project to success. So many places I been to have begged, “Please plant more trees”. I’ve just retired and returned to my mountains in East Tennessee. There are trees everywhere, thick as dog hair. I’ve planted three more, a pecan and two shaggy bark hickories. You have inspired me and given me hope. Thanks for making your project a success and sharing.

Great work to everyone involved with this not only have you helped the Landscape you have also helped hundreds of Mammals species and Birds return to their old home helping their own species and the landscape

Great work, thank you. However I’m wondering... At 2:04 As we’re facing global climate change, are the species planted in this valley ones that can withstand the effects, such as higher temperatures and lower rainfall?

The spe cies that have been re-established at Carrifran are the ones that would have been found there and elsewhere in Scotland. Most of them will also be found in hilly ranges as far south as the Pyrenees, so they'll likely be just fine unless climatic shift is extreme. I live in Tasmania and have birch, ash, oak, elm and horse chestnut in my patch. Aspen, for example, are found in N Africa.
