Greatest game I ever saw at Murrayfield (underneath the scoreboard, somewhere). Great entertainment, open game and cost £3 ..... not like the rubbish we have to endure everywhere in the World now, with rarely more than 30 seconds between stoppages, as the next set-piece is slowly served up .....
J'avais vu ce match de légende à la télé. C'était le "Andy Irvine's show"mais, les français avaient été aussi très bons. Du vrai rugby dans le vrais Murrayfield
We'd suffered something like 17 games without a win, stood on the terraces for each one. Was with my best mate Gordon, we were bemoaning Andy Irvine's mistakes and wanted him to swap places with Bruce Hay. Then out of nothing the game changed. We were so shocked took a while to sink in, then we headed to Rose Street and for once had reason to be elated. That was the start of a good team and turning point for a dozen years where Scotland were usually at the top rather than bottom of the 5N.
Did you go into Edinburgh afterwards for chips and booze? Love it. That’s what I would have done. That time is gone forever though. Terracing, deep fried chips and booze. Class
Scotland had a tremendous record at home against France in that era .This is one of the forgotten great games ....Loved Jim Renwick and Andy Irvine as a kid .
Scottish Rugby fans in those days were like football supporters with toilet roll paper being thrown on to the pitch which started in Scotland thanks to the 1978 soccer World Cup
I also note the proliferation of the Lion Rampant and dearth of Saltires at these old matches, which chimes with my dim recollections of the time (which would have included being at this match, I think after a trip to the Commonwealth Pool in the morning)
