Rust & panel repair expert John Trsar with Mustang of Chicago takes you through the steps involved in replacing the rear Wheel Well and Quarter Panel on a 1967 Mustang Convertible with perfect-fit replacement parts from Scott Drake.
You mustang guys are soo lucky. I have a 68 cougar & being in the rust belt (south Chicago burbs) my quarters are wasted. But the first gen cougar is a 2 year only car (67&8) plus only a small portion were sold compared to mustangs, no company wants to invest in the stamping forms to remake full quarters. West coast classic cougar has a used one every great once in awhile but wants $1000 each by the time ya ship 1 here. I can’t afford 2 grand just for 2 panels
Nice job. I would have welded a small brace (or two) from the trunk hinge bracket to the trunk floor. I would not trust an aftermarket panel to put it back where it was.
@7:15 Good all high quality American 60s steel. It seems on Mustangs the original panels are a few Mills thicker than the Chinese repop. Not always... just major percentage ones I've done. I would have try to save that panel... Like I said it was a good fit on the backside
John, do the quarter panels come with a straight edge (and no flange) at the B post end? Is the preferred method just to butt weld that end then? Do you have a follow up video to this one?
With a fastback model should I re-enforce anything when installing the inner wheelwells? I was told as a precaution to pull both bolts from rear of leaf springs to limit any risk in bending. What are your thoughts for a 67 Fastback. Thx!
Thats crazy to use any wd40 or oil products when working on bodywork. Those bits are 5 bucks a piece and way cheaper than the headaches of trying to degrease the car
