I'm a big Scott Henderson fan, but in this video I can't help but being equally, if not more, amazed with Kirk Covington. I mean what he does here is unbelievable. Singing like that and playing like, SIMULTANIOUSLY???
Folks, do you hear the note selection? The gigantic pool of theory he is drawing from? This isn't just guitar playing, it is something different. He isn't tumbling riffs like I do, or like most of us do. This is special.
i first heard scott at guitar institute of technology some 36 years ago. Scott was a student then , probably coming from music schools in florida, possible to just connect , because he was doing stuff like this then, it was obvious then he possesed alot of knowledge , and i was amazed at how he would start taking "it out" from our normal vocabulary of pent blues licks.. he definitely knows the blues inside and out and would be wonderful to have a blues book by scott showing more substitution, and ways he directly goes about "taking it out" iv bought his videos, and some transcription books and the first tribal tech record. Scott became a teacher at musicians institute in hollywood , where he obviously lived a life of guitar playing amongst other very clever , devoted and talented musicians. I'm still intrigued. i know he could play that a million different ways.
I agree with you. Music is for enjoyment, enlightenment and connection with the spirit.Too many people place music as a competition. If a musician is bringing joy or something special to the listener,if that listener is particpating emotionally in what the artist is performing, then what else matters. We have such a buffet before us why must people complain?
Devil Boy lyrics: Fifth o' whisky Irish gin Can't remember Which bar I'm in Take your place Here on my knee Gonna give ya..... Woman.....be my witness Gonna tell ya Things I know Bad behavior Enjoy the show Baby listen Don't cover your ears While i'm givin'..... Woman....You will remember Raw and brazen That's what I'm about Gimme numbers 'Fore they throw me out Baby listen Won't look in your face While I'm givin'....... You'll be my witness
Scotty does his own thing. Anything he is playing like Hendrix is a homage, nothing more. And he would be the first one to tell you that. l love the way he approachs blues/jazz. His tone is soooo much in his hands !
Kirk Covington, the drummer, used to be and sometimes still is, a cruise ship performer who knows and can sing hundreds of songs by heart. That's how he makes most of his money because playing jazz-rock fusion with Scott in the USA to 50 people a night in small, hole-in-the-wall clubs can never pay the bills. Only if they tour Europe and Japan and other places outside the USA do they ever make any money at all.
How dare this crowd not give this performance a 5 minute standing ovation? They just heard the most smoking blues guitar performance EVER by one of the top ten greatest electric guitarists in history and they can't be bothered to show any more appreciation than they would for some half-assed street musician? C'mon! How jaded can you get? I remember Scott telling me in Los Angeles that if it wasn't for European audiences and Japan, if he had to rely on people in the USA to show up to his concerts, he would starve. This looks like a European crowd, and it's great that there are far more then the 50 people a show he gets in L.A. but how comatose can a crowd get? I remember just a few years ago, going to an Allan Holdsworth concert in L.A. and there were only about 30 people in the club and one of them was Scott Henderson! Scott worships Holdsworth and checks him out live every chance he gets. Can you imagine that, 30 friggin' people in supposed "music capital of the world" Los Angeles to hear the greatest electric guitarist in the world?
metamorphosis67 I think they are all "Wammy Barred" to pieces.Perhaps the fact he cannot get decent pay in the U.S.A says a lot, not about his prodigious technique but that he has not been able to carry his fusion audience with him to the Wammy Blues - Rock - Fusion thing_a_mi_Jig
Yes Scott Henderson is a modern Giant and probably the heir apparent to a number of older Masters. His ear is superb and his work speaks for itself. I do not however appreciate his predilection for vibrato,a little too heavily relied on for me.
Much like all the chord subs and chromatic alterations he's playing, the excessive use of the whammy and vibrato is a feature, not a flaw. It's definitely an acquired taste, hence everyone's mileage may vary :)
Love This Video. Scotts the best fusion player up there with Hendrix. Jazz or Blues/ I never heard this jam before....its awesome as usual. Henderson the best.
Where would music be without him? This guy fills a massive niche. Unless I'm dumb, I can't think of another guitar wizard who combines such knowledge and technique with such a raw, ballsy, eccentric approach. People with very advanced technique tend to get more clean, logical and precise as they master their art; wonderful music, but rarely taking risks and defying the mathematics of guitar. It's almost like they become too good, and become unable to violate the precision they've mastered.
Zayan Gang I'm a great fan of Robben. But the point I was making is that guitarists who have really mastered their instrument have a hard time breaking out and playing something ugly or 'wrong'. Much as I love Mr. Ford, I feel he too plays very correctly; nothing wrong with that, but sometimes it's nice to catch a brilliant player who really gets out of the structure.
Scooby Doh Good point, Scooby. Kind of refreshing to have someone call me to a better grammatical standard on RU-vid. I'm so used to seeing: "Me to! Your a f***in idiot! There the f****in best!!"
GUCKIN FREAT!!! So cool to see so much feel, color and originality. Damn, I've got to thank you for posting this. Best group I've heard in years. Damn Good!!!
You are the BEST of the BEST Bro! It's such an HONOR to know you, and have studied with you! Amazing Artist on every level!!!! Hey everyone it doesn't get any better!!!
Do you guys remember Scott from the band Tribal Tech? (That was back in the 80's) Always was a favorite of mine, Love the way he plays over the changes. Just listen from 4:26 to 4:40 that says it all Nasty! Thanks so much for the post!
I was tossing out all my guitar hero records anyhow, but now I'm going to be flinging them a lot further with a lot better aim.. thanks for this fantastic video!!
I agree, if you connect to this, look forward to some freeking sleepless nights.. Scott has worked harder than any contemporary jazz artist to connect to his blues root. I listened to Dog Party, wondered what that was all about, then I heard this, Lady P, Well To the Bone and I got it. He did it. Connect. Wondrous and Amazing. Thanks Scott, this is an education.
