Fun fact about the movie twins: Apparently, the reason they don't speak is because when they put out the casting call for them asking for Japanese twins, they forgot to mention that they needed English speaking twins. But they liked the actors they got so much that they decided to keep them anyway. Paraphrasing off of memory, so some details might be wrong, but that's the gist of it.

I never noticed before that boyfriend fights got shoved into the background on purpose as kind of a joke. I used to complain about the twins getting the shaft character wise but now... gosh maybe they were meant to be card board cutout super villains impaired to the others in order for the other characters to have the focus. Great job dom.

and even THEN they get more characterisation and depth than the movie, wherein which they're JUST a powerful boss with no personality with only a bare hint of their best skill (their tech skills)

I love vs. the Universe for Ramona. She expresses so much emotion and depth that the movie couldn't get. Just her asking "Is there a difference?" regarding Scott's cheating is vastly different and more believable in the book. It's like she and Scott are very similar and while Scott is more put together in this, she's breaking down to the point of disappearing.

This was near about my favorite volume of the comic. It did a really good job of tearing Scott down, and in particular of making it clear that his own failings were to blame, that his emotional low point wasn't something Gideon did to him, but just the culmination of all the things he had been doing to himself and the people around him for the entire length of the story and years before. The film, much as I enjoyed it, really suffered from not calling its version of scott to task in the same way, since it had done such a good job of setting up those same character flaws to begin with. So the really negative aspects of Scott's character are still there in the film, but they don't actually get deconstructed & called out the way they needed to be. The big climactic revelation of the film being 'Scott Needs to learn Self Respect' really falls flat when his deepest flaws were actually rooted in a lack of respect *for others*.

@@BlackCover95 - I mean, again this is getting into stuff from the next volume/end of the film, but take the nega scott joke, where a manifestation of Scott's "dark side" appears after Gideon is defeated, and the film cuts to... a joke of scott and nega scott hanging out and agreeing to meet for coffee. It's a funny bit, I like the bit, I laugh at it every time because it's such a fun little anticlimax. But at the same time, the implied message of it, that Scott's "dark side" isn't really all that bad to begin with, that scott is actually 'a really nice guy' despite the awful things he's done? That Scott achieves closure with his inner demons by just accepting and being ok with his character flaws as they are? That's just a really bad message, because actually Scott's flaws /really are/ all that bad. Like there's some acknowledgment that Scott needs to or has changed in that he comes clean about cheating on knives & ramona, but that's about it, and it only happens after he already knows its going to come out anyway, so... yeah. The message nega-scott is used to convey in the comic is basically the exact opposite. Film Scott's confrontation with nega scott teaches him that he isn't really a bad person, while comic scott's confrontation with nega scott teaches him that, actually, he kind of is. That he's been a selfish prick to basically everyone he's ever known and that he really very much does need to change the way he treats others, a message he's only able to (literally) internalize after the events of this volume have torn him out of the comfortable rut that he's spent his whole arguably-adult life digging for himself. Obviously it's not fair to dock the film for failing to convey the message of a book that hadn't even been published when the film was produced, and I personally don't dock for it. I really enjoy the film overall, and it's not any worse about this than dozens of other hollywood blockbusters starring selfish manchildren whose behavior doesn't ever get sincerely examined or rectified. But even so, it's still a remarkably flat and off-the-mark hollywood style easy conclusion to the character compared to the significantly more nuanced depiction of scott from earlier in the film where they did have the comic to draw from, and that easy hollywood absolution for 'lovable jerk' scott can't help but be disappointing compared to the comic's deliberate subversion of exactly that sort of story and meticulous deconstruction* of exactly that sort of character. *not /just/ deconstruction either! The scott pilgrim comic doesn't just tear down lovable jerk scott, it doesn't just lay bare how harmful and flawed that archetype is, how actually bad that sort of person is, how lovability doesn't absolve one of being a jerk but rather being a jerk taints everything lovable about a person, O'Malley goes the extra mile to then /reconstruct/ scott as an actually likable person, firmly establishing that scott's jerkiness wasn't tied to what made him lovable in the first place. Scott's obviously not all the way there yet, that's not how character growth works, but by the end of the comic O'Malley's built scott into a template for a character that maintains the lovable jerk's youthful, irascible, fun & funny charm while rejecting the archetype's selfishness and deliberate, self-entitled immaturity. That's what I mean when I say the scott pilgrim comics are something special. Deconstructions can be great and good on their own, but too often they just tear something down with no idea of what should be built there instead. I mean, that's fine, it shouldn't always have to be the demolition crew's job to build the new structure too, and some concepts deserve to be torn down and just left as a blasted lot with nothing in their place. But in this particular case, O'Malley goes the extra mile, picking out what it is people love about the lovable jerk and making a case that they can have it without having the jerk, while at the same time saying it's ok and even necessary to call someone else (or yourself) out for being bad people, but that just because you have been a bad person doesn't mean you can't change and be better. bleh, I'm blathering at this point. My first comment was a lot more concise. Oh well. It's easy to get carried away with a movie this fun, a comic this good, and reviews of them them both this enjoyable.

@rmsgrey

@@Malisteen In the books, Nega-Scott is established as the personification of Scott's history of bad decisions and the aspects of his behaviour he denies are real. In the movie, Nega-Scott is just a warped reflection of Scott. In the book, Scott acknowledging that evil Scott is actually him and he can't blame his historical bad behaviour on any outside entity allows him to merge with Nega-Scott; in the movie, instead of acknowledging his own evil, he finds the good in Nega-Scott, having already acknowledged the evil in himself, and, rather than attempting to destroy his reflection, finds common ground, defeating Gideon's final ploy, not by destruction, but by finding another path. It's a different message, but that's not the same as having no message - and plays into one of the themes I think the movie does better than the book - the difference between how Scott and Ramona interact with people (particularly their exes). Ramona (particularly in the movie) is very intense - you're either a perfect boyfriend, or you're an evil ex (in waiting); Scott gets along with his exes, and at least some of them are actively supportive of his new relationship. So it's not surprising when Scott gets along with his evil doppelganger too. Movie Scott doesn't have the time to show his character growth the same way the book does, but he does at least reveal that he understands his past faults and wants to get better.
@TreebeardTheEnt

@@Malisteen I would note that an entirely different way of looking at film nega scott is that regular scott is actually the dark one to begin with. His opposite is a pleasant person, outgoing enough to be instant friends with a guy who only usually does so through sheer convenience, and brings out the best of regular scott in doing so. A stark contrast to Scott, who, arguably outside of Ramona in the end, constantly brings out the worst in his friends, causes them to fight and bicker constantly, and is a massive drain on every relationship formed.

i didn't think about it when reading the comics at first but now that u mention it yea the "darkest before the dawn" moment really is handled very well in this comic. I did think the longer time in which the comics took place was the biggest advantage the comics had as opposed to the film which seems kind of rushed and forced in comparison but this book was probably the ones that tied all that together really well by making that moment seem much more natural and understandable. tho the film did have that Threshold song which is pretty damn great

I remember when this came out there was a *LOT* of hype about this being a comic book movie and people being really disappointed when there wasn't any significant homages to comics or superheroes or anything like that. I think that's because the comic book itself was about video games and not comics. I actually quite like this film.

You partially inspired me to read them. I wanted to because of your series, and it just so happened that a friend of mine took it upon himself to lend me the whole series. I did enjoy the series, but not as much as the movie. However, the series now means so much to me. They capture what it's like to be in your early twenties so much. In short, the actual battles are more fun in the movie, but the more mundane stuff is so relatable and is the highlight of the comic books.

Is it ok to say that book Scott is actually relatable and a good character? I know he's terrible in the movie and he still makes the same mistakes in the comic but his growth in the comic is really endearing. Michael Cera sucks but I enjoy rooting for the true Scott pilgrim.
@markmittelbach7975
@markmittelbach7975 5 лет назад
I think it's more that the time between him making the mistake, and the end of the story is much longer. So book Scott has to actually pay for his mistakes, notice he's paying for his mistakes, acknowledge that those are mistakes, demonstrate that he has changed his ways. Not have that change immediately free him from all consequences, still keep to better habits despite this. He's still an idiot at times, but he's not cruel and selfish. Movie Scott is still a dick, and I think Michael Cera is intending to play him as more of a dick, and that this was a conscious decision by the director. Since the movie lacked the time for him to grow, they just leaned into him being a dick who doesn't realize it.

If you haven't seen the movie, I'd recommend holding off judgement until the end. Yes, movie-Scott is a dick for a much longer period of time, but he still gets some kind of redemption, even if it's done much more quickly and the character "growth" is more sudden.
@carlrood4457
@carlrood4457 5 лет назад
I feel that movie-Scott's growth is little difference than the growth you see in a lot of movie characters. It occurs in the last 20 minutes so that all can be forgiven and walk off into the sunset (or subspace portal). It's the sort of growth that gets tossed in the sequel so they can do it all over again. When you take away the fantasy bits, the comic is about a guy learning to become an emotional adult whereas before he was only one, chronologically. I think that's part of why the fights get less focus. He's not really winning Ramona through the fights. He's winning her by getting his crap together and being a better person. Even in this issue, you realize he doesn't entirely see that until maybe near the end.

I've read the first issue. I think I now have a handle on why the relationship in the movie never worked for me. I've always chalked it up to Ramona seeming fairly disinterested throughout, but I realized it goes further. Outside of Knives, every female character in the movie is extremely unpleasant and we don't ever get backstory as to why. Maybe that's why I rooted for Knives. She smiled and showed enthusiasm, despite her stalker tendency. Even just from the panels in these reviews, I see that Ramona and Kim have more than a single emotion. This Ramona smiles. She actually seems like a woman in love. I get the extreme compression of the movies was the reason most of Kim's storyline was left out, but they could have allowed Ramona some more range. I may be wrong, but I think I read the reason for the whole CGI battle with the twins was because they hired Japanese twins who didn't speak any English.
@ToaArcan
@ToaArcan 5 лет назад
Knives being the obviously better character in the movie was because the original planned ending for the film was for Scott to get back together with Knives, hence her playing a role in the grand finale. O'Malley told them to change it, probably because the relationship with Knives was never supposed to be a good thing for Scott or for Knives herself. While the ending was rewritten, the rest of the movie obviously wasn't, and as such we get a Scott/Knives movie that leads up to a Scott/Ramona ending. Meanwhile, there is a scene between Scott and Knives in the final book which includes several torpedoes aimed at sinking the Scott/Knives ship, probably in response to the popularity it received after the film.

I found your channel disturbingly after my sister told me about it in a phone call and the next time I opened youtube one of your videos was in my recommended. I am glad though, I have been watching four or five of your videos a day since.

This is still amazing, and seeing you reflecting so well still makes me want to reread them. I do remember this volume as being just such a downer in so many ways. The fight in the film was so weird and awesome and the song "Threshold" was actually may favorite in the movie.

I watched the movie when it was released and really liked. Only a couple years later I found out it was an adaptation but, as some of the comics had been re-released in color but some where still in black and white, I decided to wait until they were all done...and then...I just forgot about them. Thanks to the Dom I remembered that they were on my "to read" list for years now and yeah, they are really good. It is interesting, maybe because I am much older, maybe because of the artstyle but whrereas I found the movie to be "cool" I actually thought the books where really sweet and adorable. They are also way more...complete. The kind of book that makes me wish there was more, just because the characters are so enjoyable I wish I could be hanging up with them for longer. So, many, many thanks, Dom, for getting me to finally read this awesome series that I have been sitting on for some good five years. Also, Kim is best girl, super underapreciated and I hope she finds a good man/woman/psychic alien and gets done with Scott once and for all cause she deserves so much better.

To be perfectly honest, I've not seen most of your output since I have plans to read/watch either the book and/or the film and I really like going in spoiler free as much as possible. I had seen the movie first and later read the comics (over 2 nights) already and I am glad to see one of your episodes. When I first saw the movie, I had gotten it for $5 at the grocery store. I was over the moon.

I'm loving this Series so far Dom ^^ Funny thing for me is, I stopped watching the videos right around Volume 3, because I wanted to experience them myself, but I did not know when I wanted to that, but plot twist a friend, that I recently made at my new school had all the volumes and he said: I could borrow all of them. So I did and now I was able to watch all your videos up until now xD I will still buy them later on, because I liked them so much ^^
