Hey Guys,
Today, I bring you on the adventure of Scott's Polymoog 280a restoration. This particular model polymoog is special to me since this is the model it all started with for me back in my early days before I dreamed of restoring synths for a living. I bought one of these off eBay and started making my RU-vid videos of the restore progress from my bedroom.

Top drawer content as ever. Clearly a lot of work and tender loving care put into these historical pieces. Informative and spine tingling sound to boot! Love it. Only wish I could afford to purchase one and ship it to you for an overhaul.

Hey there Jareth! 1. You’re right, the 280 presets sound way better than the 203, esp the rock organ, brass and pianos! Wonder if they carried those improvements to the post-78 203A? 2. Vibes mode sounds zero % like a vibraphone 😂 😂 3. Did you use Novus 1 Plastic Clean & Shine for the plastic? Got a Korg DW that’s super dull looking, but scared I’ll ruin it with the wrong product. 4. Downloaded Gary Numan Replicas just now. Polymoog heaven. Thanks for bringing it to my attention!

Yeah, the 280a definitely was more focused on preset quality. The later 203a polymoogs did have some updates but nothing that drastically changed presets. They changed loudness contour a bit by changing lower motherboard cap values and slider tapers for decay/release. I haven't used plastic shine on these but I have seen some forms of it used with negative results. I just use automotive plastic conditioner but nothing abrasive like some shine treatments.

My tech also took a couple of the jacks and made it so the modulation depth and speed could be controlled by foot pedals

When you turn the mod amount and frequency up at 24:56 it's so close to the decay sound in the verses of Babooshka by Kate Bush...

Does the moog oscilators have all the same shapes? I mean is the POLYMOOG'S sawtooth wave look the same of a MINIMOOG or MOOG LIBERATION on a osciloscope? Which moog synth is the closest in sound to a MOOG LIBERATION? Many thanks. In 1992 a friend of mine had a faulty Polymoog and my band mate reapaired some of the voices, changing the boards inside. :) unfortunatelly no vox humana available. 😂😂😂😂😂

Due to the completely different oscillator construction; the polymoog doesn't produce the exact waveforms as a minimoog. With that said, the VCOs do share some components with the version 3 minimoog oscillator such as the heated exponential current converter (UA726).
