An amazing cultural crossover. A Scottish and a Ukrainian musicians make up a little improvisation, then exchange the bagpipes and all the musicians play together. St Andrew's Night in Ukraine. 2013. Musicians: Alex Urquhart-Taylor (Scotland), Rua Macmillan (Scotland), Цвіт Калини (Україна), Rún Folk Band (Україна)

Very nice to see two bagpipes from the opposites of Europe playing together. Interesting how the Scottish bagpipes are much louder, as they evolved from older styles to be used outdoors in marching bands. Actually, I have been in a small pub with a Scottish piper inside and it's almost as loud as a modern amplified rock band.

I've always loved the bagpipes but had no idea that there were bagpipes in Ukrainian music :) I love it!

Are they really different cultures, or just Proto Indo European? These in particular, are at least 3000 yrs old, and seem to belong together. I love the music, especially from 2-minute mark on!

It is not correct to say that ukrainian bagpiper is playing ukrainian bagpipe, because he is playing galician gaita (La Gaita gallega)

The Ukrainian style is simpler without the grace notes but then that Ukrainian shows he has a good ear and can play.

Love it. . I've seen a Дуда, but not the bags above. Apparently some people say the first King of the Scots came from Scythia which is near the north east Ukraine. Thanks for sharing.

Well, this is certainly interesting. Never mind the spirited interaction between the GHB piper and the Ukrainian, what is fascinating here in these comments is the statement by "MrRaymondscott" that "Ukrainian Galitzia is said founded by galician jews who migrated from Galicia to northern europe in 1492, thus taking their instruments with them; the galician pipe is exactly the same but with only one reed; the melody is a galician muiñeira who migrated to Ukraine." When we stumbled across this video we immediately recognized the Galician (Spanish) Gaita and my first thought was that someone making the video had no clue what they were looking at, which would not be unusual despite our and many others' efforts, for decades now, to educate people about the many, many different sorts of bagpipes in the world. We would very much like to know more about the migration of the Gaita to Ukraine, and the present state of its survival. We can very roughly deduce the movements of some early bagpipes from various sketchy historical records, the iconography, and maybe the music, but it is really rare - perhaps unprecedented - and quite exciting to hear of such a early, long-distance migration that is possibly documented rather than being speculative. And this comes on top of a related surprise described about ten years ago on our site, a Jewish bagpipe illustrated on a famous 14th century Spanish/Jewish document, the "Barcelona Haggadah" (see www.hotpipes.com/barc.html ). So, if anyone can add something to this, or point us to some source, it will be greatly appreciated.

+Universe of Bagpipes This is my video and all the musicians are my friends. Thank you for the comment. I don't know which of the tunes in this video you mean. The very first melody is West Ukrainian - Gutsul kolomiyka, it can be very often heard in the Carpathian mountains. Would be really interesting to make a research on the history of bagpipes. Some modern musicians call this instrument 'primitive' - and I will never agree with this. I will try to collect the information about Ukrainian, Belorussian and Lithuanian bagpipes. Many thanks again.

"MrRaymondscott" is just trolling or something :) Of course Ukrainian Galicia (Halychyna, Галичина) wasn't "founded by galician jews who migrated from Galicia (Spain)" *wow, the most funniest statement I heard in a while. The name comes from the name of the city Halych (Halych, Галич), which was the capital of the early principality. The city was founded in around 898. Galicia is just latinised name Halychyna. I believe the most reliable reason why these instruments have similarity and how this instrument came to the Iberian Peninsula is Visigoths migration (they migrated from Eastern Europe to the Iberian Peninsula) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galician_gaita

Which kind of Ukrainian bagpipe is that? I haven't seen it before. It is a double reed bagpipe indeed and these bagpipes are not traditional in Eastern Europe. I would say that this is more a Galician bagpipe rather than Ukrainian. Oh dear, the melody is also a Galician tune!!!!

The melody is a Ukrainian Коломийка. It is often sung in The Carpathian Mountains and has many verses.

Only at the start, when he tried to copy the Scottish pipes he did an amazing job, then to swap & play the GHB like that was very well done. Shame he didn't get the dueling banjos reference because that would have been fun.
