I want to try to convey my appreciation for you and this channel.....please take this is the loving way it is meant! I found your channel a while ago while researching my Scottish heritage/genealogy (I got distracted, shoot me). I found you through that avenue but I stayed/subscribed because your spirit and your personality and your content are awesome and speaks to me in so many ways. I want to thank you for videos like this not because you are Scots but because you have given me a little glimpse into a culture I feel connected to and drawn to but have no actual knowledge of. Thank you for giving me this list of films to watch, that I never would have know about otherwise. I can empathize with the painful stereotype because while I was not born here, I was raised in New Jersey. No I am not a GD Jersey Girl... but lord help me when I say I'm from jersey...... but I want to say I truly appreciate you Scottish videos for their content as a little view into a world culture I love and don't get a lot of authentically. But I truly appreciate you as a person and as a personality regardless of place of birth.
Your obvious highly intelligent exuberance in explaining anything is what draws me to listen to you more than your being Scottish! I too love those films and the love story in "Brigadoon", where love transcends time and space and any obstacle! Don't listen to the bad comments... Keep it up Lass!
I agree with all of your recommendation! The Angels Share is excellent. I'd also recommend Whisky Galore (1949) as a great farce...a wee bit stereotypical, but entertaining.
As a Scottish emigre every fellow Scot I encounter brings up Local Hero at some point or another. It's a great way to head off any brewing arguments about accent or class.
*starts a new to-watch list* Loved this! Loved a Scottish celebration that had no rain, haggis or whisky (well, except Brigadoon 🤣) and has Peter Mullen in it! Only seen The Prime... and Trainspotting, I'm not fit to be called Scottish. But I'll be rectifying that pronto. Except Bond, even patriotism can't get me to watch Bond.
😂😂 Yeah I love it! Can't believe that came out in 98 right enough, mad! This is only some recommendations, I couldn't list every film, we'd be here all day ha!
Brilliant isn't it 👌🏻 Yeah this is a list of "some" films, as much as I'd love to list every single film known to man...I'm not gonna. It'll likely make it into another list that's based off of another factor.
i watched under the skin when it first came out, cant say i enjoyed it that much, maybe i need to give it another go! another scottish film i love is Scottish Mussel - it feels very similar to angels share its brilliant
That's alright, if a film isn't for you sometimes it's just not your thing and that's okay. Or sometimes I've watched films and just not quite felt it. You've got to be in the right place to enjoy them :)
It's been way too long since I've watched Gregory's Girl - need to put that right. Having started out in Cumbernauld, I really should. Also, need to return to Trainspotting Sunshine on Leith - cheesy but fun You may be pleased to hear that I just cannot bring myself to watch the new version The Wicker Man Must add Neds to my list Thank you - great round-up
@@KirstieBryce good point. hahaha. Did you ever get to see The Partys Just Begining? I am very intersted in your take on that film and Filth since they both deal with mental health issues in Scotland.
You should have included Braveheart if for no other reason than to expose how cruel and tyrannical The Brits truly are. We had to defeat them twice in wars to get them away from us.
👌🏻 I explain at the end why I didn't put it on the list and I also mention that this is "some" recommendations. I can't list every film known to man 😂 I mean I could try but...we'd be here for a v long time haha!
Well Kirstie, as neat as I think your accent is, I try to not focus on it and I instead try to get a feel for who you are as a person...all accents aside. I mean I'd hate for people to focus on how incredibly-nasally my voice sounds, be that I'm really insecure and embarrassed about how highly-nasally my voice sounds. I can honestly state that having been teased a lot for my nasally voice makes me FAR less likely than the general population to tease somebody for an accent of any kind. To put things into perspective, I'd rather have an accent rather than how I don't really have any accents but I have a very nasally voice. My feeling embarrassed and insecure about my really nasally voice is my reason for not uploading RU-vid videos of my own, by-the-way. After a while, I got sick of the negative comments saying my voice is "Grating" and like "Nails To A Chalkboard" so I got embarrassed out of uploading new videos onto RU-vid: plain and simple. In addition to my highly-nasally voice, I have Asperger's/Autism and in my case I have so many "Social Learning Disabilities" that people often unjustly assume that my very nasally voice is an indication that I'm "Slow". That said, being teased a lot for my nasally voice makes me FAR less likely than the general population to tease somebody for an accent of any kind. Of course, a close friend of mine of many years would never tease me for my really nasally voice or comment on peoples' accents, for she's very Hard-of-Hearing and can't hear very well. I help her to better understand RU-vid videos by E-Mailing her what was said in sections of the videos where the Auto-Generated Captions/Subtitles were inaccurate. We're both hoping that Google will continue to improve upon the accuracy of their Auto-Captions feature of RU-vid videos, as time continues to move forward into the future. My friend says the Captions/Subtitles for your videos are better than many channels, though. But my friend says your 2nd and 6th Live Stream videos don't have any Captions/Subtitles, so she was unable to watch either of those two Live Stream videos. As far as the movie Braveheart goes, I think there will always be movies that will excessively play into stereotypes. It's a sad truth but that doesn't make it right, of course. Throughout history and since the beginning of time, there have always been conflicts between different countries, but that doesn't mean that people can't move on and life can't go on afterwards. Who cares about what happened X-Hundred years ago, right? For Example: The events of the American Revolutionary War (I'm American) in the 1770's (hundreds of years ago) is now widely-recognized as a "Historical Event" and it doesn't prevent Brits and Americans from being friends with one another later on. The world shouldn't stop spinning because of a war that happened centuries earlier. I'm not a historian and am actually pretty uninformed of what happened centuries ago and am just living in the now. I feel that the major conflict portrayed in the movie, Braveheart regarding Britain versus Scotland happened hundreds of years ago, during a very untamed era of history when conflicts for land and countries were likely more common, anyways and life was probably a whole lot meaner to begin with. Back when the events of the movie, Braveheart were taking place, life was said to have been very hard and the world was likely a very mean place. Also, I have read of historic inaccuracies for the movie, Braveheart. For Instance: That French princess that William Wallace had met later in the film was, in real life, only 1 year old when Wallace died. But, again, I can imagine that conflicts were likely very common in those days and the world wasn't as kind or understanding of a place as it is now. I'm no expert but one could only imagine how Mental Health issues were probably dealt with in Medieval times. I mean, for what it's worth, I enjoyed the movie, Braveheart but I was trying to follow the plot and determine what message the movie was trying to send. I tried to not focus on the Scottish accent, because I've always presumed movies to exaggerate accents anyways, as most films tend to exaggerate the Boston accent but because I grew up within 35 miles of Boston I know what the Boston accent is actually supposed to sound like...often not how they make it sound like in the movies. ;-) And I never blame the countries themselves for conflicts that occur throughout history. I blame 2 things: 1.) The leaders, the people in charge of the countries instigating the conflicts and 2.) The times. Medieval Times and distant centuries of the past are often portrayed to have been a very violent and war-ridden time period of history.
