I got married late in 1966 and this came out early in 1967 and immediately became my late husband and my very special songs. I still love the song but it brings a tear to my heart because the love of my life is not here to share it. RIP Gary Brooker passed away in 2022.
Yes, those decades gave us one wonder after the other. We had Bobby Hatfield and Bill Medley (the righteous brothers singing the most asked fore and played Youve lost that loving feeling and Bobby’s Unchained Melody and Summertime, and so many great female singers from Sara Vaughn to Linda Ronsteadt. So so blessed to live in that era.
I have listened to the original hundreds of times over my 52 years, this version completely swamps the original. Gary's voice is like a fine wine, it has aged perfectly. This version just pulls my soul in every direction, it never fails to be bring tears of utter sadness to my eyes while at the same time a huge smile is dancing across my lips. The highs and lows unchain all of those inner demons I have collected yet I feel my soul being lifted on wings of angels above the fray... AMAZING, AMAZING, AMAZING!!!
Yes, liked your reaction, mine similar... I fill up everytime I see this video... It is probably the best song to come out of the 60's, absolutely iconic....
@@stevehotshotsantini9777 nothing wrong with the original...I like both... but if someone has to explain it to you... nevermind... not worth the effort...
The studio version of the song was released in May 1967. That summer was my first term at university and it became part of the sound track of my life. Gary Brooker's voice has only improved over the years like fine wine. This is one of the most iconic songs of the 1960s and this orchestrated performance is absolutely brilliant and unforgettable.
Absolutely amazing 👏 . Very sad about Gary Brooker's death 2/19/22. His voice got better, more powerful, stronger as he grew older. He was live, playing keyboards and how clear and strong his voice was here.
I’ve watched this rendition no less than one hundred times and every single time I’m in awe of the way they put together a band, an orchestra, and a choir together for this live performance and how they all delivered flawlessly. Has got to be one of the best one song performance ever - The Bee Gees “Too Much Heaven” is the other flawless performance that comes to mind.
This performance in '06 was 40 years after the song came out.Gary Brookers vocals are even better and singular. I've watched this at least 20 times in this month only. Wonderful reaction my new friend. Goosebumps~ヾ(*’O’*)/
This is possibly the absolute most beautiful musical clip I've ever seen. It evoked almost every good emotion I have, and tears are never far from that. I was stunned.
As incredible as this version with the orchestra is, I remember hearing this song when it came out, it was like nothing I ever heard before in my 17 years and no matter who did a version of this song. . .Joe Cocker, Johnny Rivers, Annie Lennox, hearing them always takes me back to the magic of hearing this song for the first time. . .It was then and still is today, simply. . . .Magical ❤❤👍👍
Agreed. No better version than the original. And that is not always the case. But this original is best left alone in my opinion. Takes me back too where other covers do not. Just need to close my eyes....
I remember the very first time I heard this song. I was driving my 1965 candy apple red Mustang when this came on the radio. This song had just come out, the year 1967. I immediately turned the car around, drove directly to the record store and bought the album. And I have been in love with it ever since.
I still get chills when I hear this song. After all these years it still takes my breath away. This is my first time hearing it with an orcastra. Awesome reaction and such a treat to hear. Thank you
Goosebumps. Every. Time. Applause to the sound technician for the blending of sound from single vocals to the choir. I, too, appreciate the stillness of the performers. Letting the musical performance speak for itself in that spectacular setting. If you like the classical stuff with a modern twist try the flashmob of Ravel's Bolero. There are several here on RU-vid to chose from, my favorite is the Milwaukee Museum edition. Each instrument steps in & adds to the piece. Pure genius. I hope you check it out.
This song needs to be done as a "compare and contrast" with the band's original from 1967. In 2004 it was named the most played recording broadcast in the UK in the last 75 years.
Just watching the original video in ‘67 and seeing the 2006 version knowing nearly 40 years had passed, and it was just as good makes it seem timeless.
And it won a Britannia (BRIT) award (at the first award year) for the best record of the previous 25 years jointly with Bohemian Rhapsody. Interestingly both songs uniquely feature the word fandango!
Certain pieces of music can remind us of past events, experiences and people, triggering memories and associated emotions. At other times, we may feel tearfully awestruck in the face of the greatness or sheer beauty of the music. 🎼🎹🎼
This was my Husband's favorite song. He passed in '96, and I play it on days I'm needing a little strength. He was 9 years older than me, so he introduced me to really beautiful music. ❤👍🙌🎶🎵
I was 25 when this was first released, Gary Brooker sounds even better 39 years later I'm sure due to the maturity in his voice, I just watched a more recent live performance ( 2019 ) and sounds just as good. I feel blessed to have grown up in the 50's 60's 70's, an era that produced some of the best writers, singers, musician and performers that ever graced this earth.
This is a masterpiece! It is amazing how beautiful this man still sang and he was in his 60's. It would have been amazing to have been there. Great song with so much meaning.
I love the song and always have. But, I have to disagree that there is a lot of meaning to the song.. If you look at the lyrics it really goes nowhere. It tells no story at all.
Great song that takes me back to younger better days. Don your reactions are so real and so heartfelt, what I like the most is you truly feel and lose yourself in the performance. What a treat!
I've loved this song since 1967 when it was released. I love the use of the orchestra and the drums and piano. His voice is great, so soulful! The song was almost 50 years old when this performance occurred.
I sooooooo love the appreciation and amazement on people's faces as they come to know this guy and this song!! Puts a tear in my eye and a lump in my throat!!
I have watched this many times over and it still is evocative every time. I have looked for a copy on CD it does not look like its out there only on on DVD.
I have it on official CD released 17 Nov 2008 Label - Eagle . Catalogue : EAGCD400 Maybe no longer available but I bought it new and sealed from a record store this month .
I'm so glad you reacted to this version. Such a great song & I think he was in his 60's around this time & still has that voice!!! Sarah Brightman also did a nice version too.
I haven't heard this in years! WOW, I forgot how beautiful it was! Red Skelton saying The Pledge of Allegiance, the one that's over 5 minutes is the best.
I love to watch you younger people listen to this video, and see your reactions. Many have listened to the original studio version, and thought they knew what to expect. Then they listen to this, and eyes get wide and mouths fall open. I have listened to a lot of big artists back when they were young, and then as they got up in age, and most have had to change keys, or otherwise change their vocals because they could no longer hit certain notes. Gary is one that just got better as he aged. He was good when this song came out in the 60s, but almost 40 years later in this performance, he was great. I compare him to a bottle of fine wine. He got better as he aged.
It melts my heart as a daughter of a veteran granddaughter with veteran mother of a marine watching and see the love and joy in your eyes when you watch our American history and way of life cuz you appreciate it even more than the people that are here that are from here. There is a song that you can play that describes this American ( Texan ) it's a most play it's on my top 10 of all time ... Don Williams. ( i believe in you )
My absolute favorite Poco Harem song. Love this song 🎵 Whiter Shade of Pale. This live Denmark 🇩🇰 version is the best 👌 hauntingly beautiful. So sad to hear about Gary Brooker's passing February 19, 2022. So sorry.
1967 was a very good year - Whiter Shade of Pale and Nights in White Satin. Doesn't get much better than these two songs coming out at the same time. Moody Blues & Procul Harum - thanks for the memories! This was "lovely", however, I will always prefer the original!
"Broaden the music horizon", for sure!!!!!! Very seldom do I share music with people I know. But, in this case, I sent this to EVERYBODY I know! This was spectacular in every way. The orchestra, the organ, his voice, the melody, and on and on. Even that one note the lady in the choir sang, they probably heard her in Sweden! Yes, this is music. Then joining two genre's together to come up with this, wow!
There are absolutely no mountains in Denmark - only hills - - but a lot of castles and this ground is the park of such a castle. - so this was a "castle concert" . Thank you for your reaction.
Bach’s Air on the G String. I am 67 and I first heard this when I was a teenager. Hard to explain how and why this gorgeous song hits the listener so deeply. You just have to be silent for awhile after it’s over.
I'm part of the younger generation but my dad played this song all the time and back then i didn't think much of it but as i grew older the song just grew more on me to the point that it has become my all time favorite. This performance reinforces it.
I find it incredible that younger people of today have such a disconnect with the phenomenal music of the 60s. I don’t think we have witnessed this before as we - I grew up in the 60s - knew all the Sinatra songs etc and so many other of the past. The intro of that song came from Bach - see, no disconnect with the past.
AMAZING! Step 1 - Orchestra prelude Step 2 - Gary Brooker and orchestra Step 3 - Gary Brooker + orchestra + band (Procol Harum) + choir “A WHITER SHADE OF PALE” was released by Procol Harum in 1967 and it was their first single ❤ RIP Gary Brooker 1945 - 2022 *PROCOL HARUM is a latin expression that means "beyond these things"
A perfect blend of classical and pop music! I must mention several things. Thanks so much for your reaction. ( Love your accent! )The choice of the arranger to put the melody in the minor key was brilliant, immediately conveying a feeling of bittersweet nostalgia. And then composing a Tierce de Picardie before the vocal? Gorgeous! Brooker's voice, like the finest wine, has improved with age. For those of us who grew up with the original song, the entry of the guitars, drums and B3 organ resonates deeply. The sixteen voice choir sends the song heavenward and the finale is, in a word, orgasmic! Hats off to the audio engineers who mixed a full orchestra, choir, group and starring vocal into a moving experience for the ages!
Loved this song since I was a kid. I loved the original, but with the orchestra and background vocals it was very pretty. I stumbled upon this version about 4 years ago. Procol Harum did a great job.
