How Gary’s vocals could actually improve over decades just blows me away. I truly think his voice was better here than when he recorded the song.

When I first listened to Gary Brooker´s voice as a tiny little girl in the late Sixties, I absolutely fell in love with him. The warmth, the melancholy in his powerful voice is beyond beautiful.

I'm 63 years old (only in age) and luckily I've lived among musicians since birth, this allowed me to listen to this song for the first time when I was less than 10 years old and it's been part of my personal playlist ever since. What immediately struck me at first listening was the incredible sound of the Hammond B-3 organ which, thanks to the Leslie, produced an enveloping and very involving sound and which at that time became extremely popular among Italian progressive groups. Its sound, live, is an experience to be had at least once in a lifetime. The video whose link I send you is the live version from 2006, with a more intense Gary Brooker than ever. In February of last year he flew away, but his voice and his piano still vibrate in the air.

So glad that you reacted to this! I found this live video after stumbling upon and listening to what the Professor of Rock had to say about this song and Procol Harem. I think you'd appreciate what he had to say. Then I had to check out your comments as I found your channel some time ago. We're the same age. This song is so haunting. I agree with all your comments. The orchestra is DR's symphony orchestra, also known as the Danish National Symphony Orchestra. DR is the first Danish national radio- & TV station. It goes back to the 1920s (hence why DR stands for Danmarks Radio). The choir in the video is also part of the radio - & TV station. DR is a public service station, so we pay for them via TV license (media license). DR Koncerthuset actually have a very popular RU-vid channel under the name DR Koncerthuset. Their most popular video, is their interpretation of "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly". It has over a hundred million views. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-enuOArEfqGo.html (Great reaction video) If you're into movie music, they have done quite a few of these. Fun fact about the video you reacted to: DR thought it was such a great concert with Procol Harum, that they wanted to release a DVD with the whole concert. But the negotiations took a long time, so the DVD was first released in 2009, 3 years after the concert.

You’re quite right: Procol Harum is a band that deserved more attention; they have quite a unique sound based on classical music and blues. When I found this video on RU-vid, it definitely made me appreciate this song more. You asked a question about Keith Reid, who wrote the lyrics. He is the exclusive songtext writer. I don’t know many other bands or artists with such a person; to me only Bernie Taupin, the writer of Elton John songs stands out. Perhaps others know more ? I heard Keith Reid just tried to paint a picture with this text, like a Dali painting. From this concert you should definitely check out Conquistador, which has a very different vibe and sounds great as well. Regards from the Netherlands!

Gary never sounded better and one particular moment during the video really floored me and it was when the woman in the chorus belted out that note that people in Sweden and Norway must have heard. I believe this video will soon top the 100M views mark and that speaks volumes, for sure.

The "Wallpaper" of my youth. You just spoke my mind in so many ways - a lot of other reactors are putting on a show - like the "dance-ability" - and you can just convey the feelings - listening to it. I am a bit older than you - close to 72 - and I enjoy the listening - and the orchestra - that I know very well being a Dane - was the orchestra of the Danish only radiochannel - in those days. They have made a lot of movie music - I can recommend their version of "The good, the bad and the very ugly" by Morricone. And if you like the oboe - and Morricone - I can recommend the version of "Gabriels Oboe" from the movie "The Mission" - with the oboe being played by one of my friends, Henrik Goldschmidt and the Faroe Island Symphony Orchestra - it has millions of viewings on YT. - I was braugt up with melody and harmony and singing in a choir at school and listening to rock as well as classical music - by the way - this was inspired by Bach's "Air on the G-string". The conductor, Ib Glindemann was as classically educated trompetist - playing jazz after listening to Louis Armstrong at a concert - . When asked what song he wished that he had written, Paul McCartney answer - A whiter shade of pale". I am definitely a new subscriber! Thank you for the reaction. - -and sorry for my English - I hope that you understand.

Procol Harum was my favorite band in the early 70s. I had most of their albums and I was able to see them live 3 times. The first time was at the Atlantic City Rock and Pop Festival the week before Woodstock. Their live sound was always more majestic than the recorded versions. The swell of the Hammond with the piano was so wonderful. My favorite songs by them were Homburg from the Grand Hotel album, A Salty Dog from the album of the same name, and Repent Walpurigs, an instrumental piece that brought out the sound of the band. This song, unfortunately, was played to death and it lost some of its majesty. This performance brings it back. Thanks for sharing it.

I understand completely about your comment on hearing violin(s) in a live setting. For me it's the sound the bow makes on the strings and the overtones that are produced. This sound of the friction of the bow on the strings never gets captured on recordings very well for some reason. Then there's the resonance the instrument produces that you can only appreciate live. Good observation BTW. I always loved this band especially live. Saw them 3 times Twice with orchestra backup and once all by themselves. Fantastic either way ,but, intergalactic with an orchestra.

I remember visiting an evening of symphony orchestra with rock artists, like Colin Blunstone, John Miles (Music), Barry Ryan (Eloise), their old hits now played by the orchestra. Of course, already great was actor Richard Harris when late sixties he sang with an orchestra (MacArthur Park). I remember also seeing nice registrations done some years ago with Steve Harley (Cockney Rebel) with a Scandinavian orchestra I think, performing Sebastian and Make Me Smile. A story told by a drunk broken hearted old man, a carpenter / miller . (about a young wife that cheats on her older husband), and her face, already ghostly from breaking the news of leaving, turns a whiter shade of pale, because she too had been cheating. His eyes were open, knowing she she leaving, but might just as well been closed, because he didn't know why.

Just found you. Here's some info i found: at voutu.be/Pf73XwiZIFQ&t=1s is "Procol Harum - A Whiter Shade Of Pale | The story behind the song I Top 2000 a gogo" video of singer, keyboardist & composer Gary Brooker & Iyricist Keith Reid talking about the story behind the song - which is the best source of info since it is coming from them; many people believe it is about a one night drunken sexual encounter. It's also believed that it was inspired by Johann Sebastian Bach's "Sleepers, Wake!" and'Air on the G String" but contrary to popular belief the song is not a direct copy or paraphrase of any music by Bach although it makes references to both pieces. As per Reid, the line "as the miller told his tale" is definitely NOT a reference to Chaucer's Miller's Tale. Reid has repeatedly explained he'd never read The Canterbury Tales when he wrote A Whiter Shade of Pale. Procol Harum is supposed to have been the name of a friend's cat; the name is a mis-spelling of the Latin phrase Procul Harun (roughly meaning "far beyond these things"), or that it was a corruption of Procellarum, a vast ocean on the Moon. The song has been the most played song in the U.K. for the last 75 yrs. Thanks very much.
