Anthony Bourdain, in an episode of Parts Unknown, went to visit the Waffle House alongside local chef Sean Brock - the way they described it was poetic, so I needed to try it for myself.

Waffle House IS truly a weather barometer, no joke. We had a weird, freak snowstorm in middle GA many years ago. My dad came and rescued me (I was stranded at my community College and it took hours for him to get to me). We were starving on the way back home and my dad said WH would still be open and yes, it was the only thing open. I'm sure lots of Southerners have similar stories. If WH is closed, you shouldn't be out either.

It's called the Waffle House Index; it's an informal metric that FEMA (federal emergency services) uses to gauge just how bad the disaster is. Green is open and full menu served, Yellow is open but with limited menu (no power or power being created by a generator, or food supplies are low), Red is closed completely and boy are you in trouble because there's some major damage.

I've heard it said that after cooking high end food all day at work, chefs don't necessarily want fancy food, and they certainly don't want to cook their own dinner. Simple comfort foods are what they want.

I'm from a mixed marriage (Massachusetts and Texas) and have an appreciation for all things porridge - oatmeal, grits, Cream of Wheat, etc. Had a friend from Canada visit years ago and took her to Denny's for grits. i should have taken her to Waffle House, but Denny's was closer. Also took her to a BBQ place that didn't have fried okra. I was a bad Texas friend. 🫤

I've lived in the South for 40 plus years and I have never liked grits over gravy, liking grits over gravy is like eating toast over biscuits or eating possum over steak. 🤷‍♂️😑

seems he wasnt made aware you could customize those hashbrowns, its part of the WH gimmick. country, smothered, covered, and peppered for me! glad you enjoyed it nonetheless, just good simple food at a reasonable cost. WH is there when you need them.

I go to Waffle House more than any other restaurant probably. Not for waffles and sugary stuff, I get a ham & cheese omelet with side of bacon or sausage. Maybe hash browns if feeling indulgent. They have a knack for making great fluffy omelets. Waiter is always very friendly and usually the cook will walk over and see how I liked it. Great service. Often the butt of jokes yet a great place.

My favorite is to go with the Pecan waffle, or I could down a double order of hashbrowns scattered, smothered (with fried onions) and covered (with cheese.) The cheesesteak isn't too bad either.

So glad y'all enjoyed your time in Georgia. The Waffle House is a go-to place for so many regardless of the time of day or the weather. The Waffle House staff have been know to take meals to folks after a storm, to help those who may need a hot meal. The summers are wicked in Ga. My friend and I have been texting each other the temperature reading in Edinburgh and in Augusta, Ga all summer. We are truly envious of the Scottish weather in summer. 💙🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿💙🇺🇲

I agree with you. I'm from NC but lived in Sandersville, GA for a year and a half. It was a nice town but the summer is more brutal than in NC because of the higher humidity. 🥵

Before you mentioned Bourdain by name, I knew this episode was inspired by him. I'm in Dallas and have several near me, but don't go because of my heart health. Once a year, I make an exception. That episode is a classic, and that scene in particular.

Waffle House is so much its own thing. I think their most slept-on menu item is the grilled chicken sandwich. I also recommend getting your hash browns scattered, smothered, covered, and peppered.

Before there was a Waffle House there was Krystal, but they seem to have fallen on hard times. This guy seems to think he’s in some kind of formal atmosphere and doesn’t realize that in America you eat what you want when you want and how you want it. Don’t forget the butter on your waffles.

Sausage and cheese omelet(Nobody talks about it but their omelets are REALLY airy and fluffy)with hashbrowns smothered, covered, and country. Eat the hashbrowns with the omelet. S tier order.

Waffles with syrup, sausage, and eggs are the bomb. I often will mince cooked sausage and mix it in waffle or pancake batter, then fry it up. Served with real maple syrup - heaven!

Quick FYI. I live in Ohio. We have many Waffle Houses here and have had them for about 40 years. Their waffles are wonderful. And they have my favorite BLT, hands down!

We probably go to Waffle House more often than any other restaurant. Good food fast was their motto and they delivered. You could always depend on Waffle House 24 hours a day 365 days a year. Unfortunately they have gone a bit down hill since the pandemic. Their hours and restrictions on serving cut into their convenience factor and they have reduced their menu considerably. They still offer items that they don't list on their menu. For basic breakfast at a reasonable price, you can't beat them.

Shaun, no rules! Eat it as you wish. I would do savory first, bc cold eggs 🤢 and I don't mix savory with sweet. That waffle is like dessert! If they're not busy, and the waffle comes with the meal, I might even ask that they bring it out a few minutes later. But if a place is busy, I don't dare be "extra"

I love how Brits have the knife in their dominant hand and don’t switch hands to eat. In the US we use knife dominant hand put it down then the fork goes to dominant hand to feed.😂 I first noticed this in Wales 30 years ago

Waffle House basics here in Oklahoma is, eggs over easy, hash brown potates, biscuits and sausage gravy, sausage, add a walnut waffle with syrup, a cup of coffee (sometimes called a cup of joe) and juice of your liking.

I have visited the UK several times. Just got home from Scotland a week ago. Whenever I’m there, I miss being able to get food when I want it. You’ve got to hit places at just the right time in the UK. So many times the internet gave hours for a place and when we got there, they said the kitchen was closed! Several times places just closed early. Had instances where we went to nice restaurants and they only had say 3 portions of something on the nights menu! I realized pretty quickly that I’m a spoiled American and am used to being able to get food around the clock! God bless the Waffle House!

Glad you went to Waffle House. It's a solid go-to. When I'm in Georgia, I try to go at least once. Pecan waffle's good, hash browns (I'll risk the allergies for scattered onions), and a coffee. It's decent hot plate coffee, and the staff's always been good to me.

WH was a staple for us a college students back in the day in the Dallas-Fort Worth area in the middle of the night, after going out and drinking, or when working late on a project at school. Of course, Whataburger and their breakfast taquitos was also a favorite back then. Cheap, plentiful, and filling for a bunch of university students. Enjoy. =)

Two pro tips- 1, at WH, ask for “ dark roast “ coffee. You will get the freshest brew, as they don’t usually make it, and it is much closer to a French roast, and more full bodied than the usual stuff they pour. 2. Ask for an extra minute on your waffle - the extra crispy ness makes them better in my opinion. bonus- if you’ve never tried country ham, try it at least once. It’s thick and salty, and has a shank bone with a bit of marrow. .

I love Waffle House!!! Its a US 1 treat. Btw quick fact after storms they used Waffle House to predict openings of storm regions in Eastern US coast. Waffle House was known to be First to open and last to close.

As a southerner, i don't think there's any rule as to what order you eat things, but personally I'd eat the waffle as soon as it's brought out so it maintains its texture. Either that or bounce around the plates eating a little of everything

There's really no way to eat any of what Y'all had in the "wrong" way, except maybe for grits on a waffle! If you venture into a Waffle House again, try out the variations on the hash browns. My favorite order is: "hash browns, smothered, covered, chunked, and topped."

If you do not eat at the counter you are missing one of the great food experiences at the Waffle House (or any other roadside diner). If the location has a great short-order cook you can enjoy early morning entertainment when the room is full and order are flying. These cooks are amazing to watch handling multiple orders all at once. Now, that's America.
