I walked the River Walk in 1972 when I graduated from Air Force basic training at Lackland Air Force Base. They would load anybody who wanted to go on a bus, drop you off with instructions to be back at a certain time, then take off. After 6 weeks of being under strict control at all times, walking where you want when you want is a great thing. It's sure nicer now than it was then, tho...
We stayed at a a hotel on the river walk . We went out one evening and took pictures after dark. We dialed our settings in and set the timer to ten seconds. When the boats came by we pressed the shutter button. Our photos came out fantastic. They had beautiful colored streaks from the lights on the boats.
Born an raised in San Antonio .. the River Walk has always been my escape.. my go to hideaway. Thanks so much for sharing San Antonio with the world 🌍.all are welcome.. visit..
Selina was about Selina Qintenera the legendary singer who died tragically after getting shot by her supposed friend and business manager. Selina was the first to really introduced america to mexican Spanish songs and was really making a name for herself. she also represented the mexican population as a whole as it wasn't that big back then. Selina was actually working on her only american English album when she died. the funeral was swamped with fans and it really was a huge tragedy. Jenifer lopez played selina in the movie as a tribute and as a way to respect her as jen was a huge fan of Selina.
During San Antonio’s annual Fiesta celebration, there are wonderful parades on the River Walk where the “floats” really are floating….. the night time parades on the river are my favorite!
Just to add to your list of films shot on the San Antonio Riverwalk... "The Getaway" starring Steve McQueen & Ali McGraw a few scenes were shot on the riverwalk as well as various locations across south Texas throughout the film, check it out!
Texas does have a lot, seriously. Much of our more recent culture is Germanic, given that several places along the coast were POW's camps: officers returned, enlistment allowed to stay...aside from Project Paperclip. Seriously though, Germans have been here long before, as they owned the Mexican Empire for a bit, and you still see this in their programming. I especially enjoy the Hill Country in the middle, and want to retire in Abilene or thereabouts (the back-end of the ripple). It's a quite place, and has about 100k folk in a 20 mile place,: it's like a big small town: old friend would quiet his kid from driving the loop, which took an hour. If you do visit, check out their storytown in the downtown sector, and the Singing Bridge. That all said, I do enjoy a long soak in the Guadalupe River, camp chair in the sink and drink at the ready.
Germans and Czechs have been in Texas in substantial numbers since it was an independent country. Towns like Fredericksburg were ling majority German and German was frequently spoken. Germany was the third greatest provider of American immigrants after Great Britain and Ireland. No need to come up with tortured explanations of German POW's or Maximilian's Austrians fleeing north, which they didn't anyway.
You really, Really, REALLY need to come back to San Antonio in April. The Highland Games are the first weekend closest to April 6th and Fiesta is the second and third weeks of the month.
This is interesting for two connected reasons - I lived in Glasgow, Scotland from 1955 to 1958, and San Antonio from 2013 to 2016, so I got se see familiar sights and hear from someone whose accent is similar to the one I used to have.
The water pump that drives the flow of water through the river walk is at the San Antonio zoo area. It was from the 1950's. The pump is almost on it's death bed. Without the pump, the river walk would transform back into a sewer. They cannot get the parts to fix the pump anymore. They haven't come up with a plan to make sure that this thing never breaks or is replaced.
The river walk is such a beautiful place to hang out in ..I would always hang out there back in the day enjoy my friend..💕💕 Thanks for showing us Love 💕
I know you spent some time in the DFW area and San Antonio, did you get a chance to visit Austin, Houston and South Texas? Each area is very different from each other. I'd also recommend west Texas for the scenery and unbelievable night sky if you enjoy the outdoors. Also, I came across your videos (and have really enjoyed them) because I was doing some research on parts of Scotland I plan to visit (this December) and RU-vid recommended you.
Texans like to tell that story the boat driver did about only the Texas flag being flown as high as the US flag. But actually all state flags, when flown on separate poles, can be flown as high as the US flag. And the Texas flag code states that when both national and state flags are flown on the same pole, the national flag is on top.
I agree--the Riverwalk is well worth doing, and some relaxing fun. (That bit about the Texas flag though--ALL states can fly a flag the same height as the American flag--look it up.)
Yea there’s a lot of tourist attractions in Edinburgh (I saw most of them) and I did take a bus 🚎 tour through the highlands to Glencoe and on to Loch Ness where yes I did see Nessie.. I hope you get a chance to come back to my State of Texas someday we’re happy you came to visit
Your tour guide captain was very entertaining and skilled, nearly losing his head going under that low bridge (don't know how many people noticed it). Where you find boats and yachts, you'll surely find Aussies.
La villita 1st settlement..Dt..so is Mi Tierra.. best for downtown. Oldest too I think. Also go to the Pearl District downtown. Used to belong to the Pearl beer brewery. (what u had last time we’re tourist tacos.) See Netflix Taco Chronicles especially season 2 episode 4 I think…lots on San Antonio taco places..and leave DT for better tacos.. get puffy tacos.
@@jennifergarrett6809 That happens to me, too. :) But in this case, I don't think it was what he was saying, as much as the way he was saying it. He seemed to be overdoing the accent, laying it on a little thick and exaggerated for the tourists. That's what I found annoying, but maybe it's just me. :)
@@PerthTowne I was actually laughing at that. As I said I find the humor in what others don't understand. Sometimes it's dark but I still find it funny. And said to say I have a tendency to repeat the dark stuff too. Dumb jokes also as well as subtle things that most people don't get.
I live 20 minutes from downtown SA. At least once a month I head downtown to see what's going on. As a local I do enjoy walking down the Riverwalk it's quite and peaceful even with the tourists . Most of the time I end up walking to the King William district that's my favorite area.
Welcome to our hometown. We hope you enjoy the vastness of what San Antonio has to offer which includes far more than the 2 kilometers of the Riverwalk's "restaurant loop" downtown.
I would love to have been a passenger on that boat listening to the pilot talk. I visited the River Walk many times back in the early 1970's and especially enjoyed eating at Mexican restaurants. The pilot is just one example of all the nice, outgoing people I met down in "good ol' San Antone".
Dude! I love the Riverwalk, when I lived in SA me and my roommates would buy some booze and just walk along the river drinking nice cold beer to beat the heat. I'm back at the south Texas border, but I sure miss legally being able to walk around drinking 🍻
Love your videos! You need a straw hat for summer here in Texas! Much cooler than the felt (though less cool looking). I also recommend visiting Gruene, Fredericksburg, Fort Worth Stockyards, and Houston Space Center.
Congrats on the honorary citizen status! While you were San Antonio (we say SA for short) did you go on the haunted tour? I am not sure why I am not getting notifications but I am sure is a you tube thing. Hope you had a great time! Yall come back now 🤠🤠
The false on the building is actually the last remnant of the Texas Theatre, built in 1926. The city had saved several theatres but the Texas Theatre wasn’t in the budget and a new high rise was planned in its location. Big business won and ewe lost the Texas theatre. The saved the front of the theatre and incorporated it into high rise.
As a native Texan, when I saw the name of this video, I thought "It's either gonna be the Alamo or the Riverwalk, and he's already done the Alamo." I love being right. lol
May I ask, when you say you fell in love with our “culture” what exactly do you mean? I’ve been here my whole life and recognize that there are various cultures going on here simultaneously and not one unified culture. See, in my eyes, we are one nation with many cultures - which is why we are so unique. I hope you had a fun time during your stay and come back to visit other areas for a better representation of what I mean. 🥰
Too bad you couldn't make it down to Edinburg, Texas. It is about 4 hours south of San Antonio. It is named after Edinburgh, but we changed the spelling and sound.
Is it the most popular in Texas? Statically it may be, I don't know. I do know that I enjoyed Fossil Rim Wildlife Center in Glen Rose Texas a hell of a lot.
somehow almost every year I get to take friends on the riverwalk boats in the middle of the Summer so I can bake my big round butt like a baked potato. I try to tell folks to not come in Summer, yet they persist. Another fun thing is to take folks to the Missions and let them hang out in one of the "homes" and let them realize that folks really lived in them all year without A/C or heat. Our ancestors were TOUGH
Sean you goof that's not how you go down the river in Texas 1st of all you get 1 inner tube (that's the thing that 🤔in the olden days our car tires were like bicycle tires with inner tubes inside so they were bigger & even bigger in the truck tires) & you get 1 for the drinks tie them together get in at the top of the river (that God made 🙄) wearing your cut off shorts SUNSCREEN would be a must for you cause you spend all day floating down the river😉😂great times!!!
Ew. No! Regulations are way too strict for that in our modern times. San Antonio has upgraded to better technology at the sewage treatment plant. We have ducks and fish in the river and they have to be safe.
You may however be killed by Antifa, one of the exotic diseases your "homeless spread" or the numerous serial killers and criminals running amok freely in your police free area.
I think you’ve reached your San Antonio max now. 2x River walk + Alamo + a rodeo. You didn’t spend this much Time one on more interesting places in California
To be clear, what the guide said was wrong. Every state in the US can fly their state flag at the same height as the US flag. If you have two flag poles, US flag goes to the left, your state flag on the right pole. If you have one pole, US flag on top, state flag on bottom. You never fly another countries flag on the same pole as the US flag on US soil. Lastly, your state flag, or other flag flying, cannot be larger than the US flag. It needs to be equal in size or smaller, and you would never fly a state flag about the US one.
I believe the attraction with the largest amount of visitors is actually Trader's Village in Grand Prairie. This is a huge loosey goosey buy and trade anything place open year round. This is where the millions of illegals purchase a Social Security card. The replicas look identical and are in use by illegals daily by the millions in Texas alone.
IT A SHAME YOU CAME TO AMERICA DURING OUR WORST TIME, BUT WE THE PEOPLE WELCOME YOU. MY FAMILY, THREE FAIR SKINNED SCOTSMEN WENT TO ENGLAND THEN AMERICA. THE DRINKARDS. 👍👍🙏🙏🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🗽🗽🗽🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
San Antonio is hot, very hot, and full of flying cockroaches. The “river” is really a concrete drainage ditch and is waste high. So if you’re in the area, okay, but I certainly wouldn’t plan a trip there.
The river is an actual river, with head waters a few miles north of down town flowing 240 miles to the coast; and used by native Americans and early Texans long before the city existed...not a drainage ditch
