Scrabble but each tile is worth its alphabetical position!

In the newest episode of modified tile bag Scrabble, I take on Quackle in which tiles that are later in the alphabet are worth more points! The A is worth a measly 1 point, but the Z is worth a whopping 26! Even the U, normally worth just 1, is now worth 20! Who will come out on top in this quest to hoard Us, Vs, and Ws?

Is it possible to do a modified dictionary variant? I'd be interested in seeing a game with the dictionary limited to say the 10,000 most frequently used English words from the normal Scrabble dictionary (or however many makes sense), effectively simulating the word knowledge of a casual player who hasn't looked into some of the more esoteric words specifically useful for Scrabble.

Woogles does have a "common English words" dictionary option. I don't know how many words it has.

Yeah, the best option would probably be the common English words feature on Woogles as mentioned below. I've looked at it a few times and some of the inclusions/exclusions seem a bit arbitrary (i.e. there are some words I would consider common that aren't in there, and vice versa), so it's not perfect, but maybe I'll give it a try!

@@mackmeller Yeah, I imagine it might make the most sense to play with the ability to check if a word is legal or not. To me the interesting part of the challenge would be the limited word set rather than the difficulty in knowing what counts or not. I think we can safely trust the extent of your word knowledge to comfortably fully encompass the common word subset, so the ability to check shouldn't infer an unfair advantage in that way.

I wanted to say that this was a bagging, but here is the math. Mack drew 47 tiles total, Bot drew 51 tiles. The point differential on tiles drawn was -127 in Quackle's favor. But this does include the IJO tiles that the bot never played that Mack got as points at the end. So the bot was drawing on average about 10 points more than Mack after each play... I would say that is significant. You should run this Scrabble variant again and see if you might draw more favorably!

It was a bit of a bagging, the bot having TUUUY while you had ABCEF says it all.

This variant makes overlaps really powerful

I'd be more interested with this set up but in reverse. So A's would be 26 and Z's 1. In regular scrabble the G, Z, X, V, J ect are already high scoring so this game still is in line with what we expect. But making letters like the vowels and C, and D high scoring would be a fascinating run!

Yeah good idea!

On the ROmAN turn I think something like L12 FOHN for 151 looks decent positionally, keeping AR? for huge triple triples as well as keeping the right side of WAGE open. Something like TRUANTrY scores 1,121! The triple-triple might also be tough to block if Quackle has a ton of consonants. After a worst case scenario like TUYER, the board is just so dead (even if it scored considerably less). Still, Quackle was clearly outdrawing you by quite a lot. Fun variant, and will have to give it a try sometime!

Yea i just feel like Mack didnt find the best strategy

Interesting -- yeah I think you're right. FH is just such a dreadful leave after ROmAN, and my situation is probably bad enough there that I do need to be a bit more aggressive and try to fork the board. Good call!

You should try Scrabble but the double/triple premium tiles are reversed (DLS squares become TWS, DWS squares become TLS squares etc.) Early-game triple triples are bound to happen

Or, you know, the game becomes an automatic 6 pass every time

@richards31415 10 месяцев назад
@@matthewoconnor3362 yeah, I quickly realized that any 2-tile play opens up 3x3x3 opportunities. perhaps there could be a way to incentivize going first, e.g. also making the center square a TWS

I think you might have missed higher scoring plays in certain spots simply because the word might have been very bad in normal scrabble. For example, overlapping plays are much more valuable in this variant because so many tiles late in the alphabet form a lot of 2 letter words; and you might just be overlooking these plays because the tiles are all one pointers in regular scrabble
@pandurendradjaja8994

Bingos are so much less valuable in this game. Is it possible to change the value of a bingo? If not, are non integer tiles possible?

Can you do a variant where the game is scored differently? For example, points based on the length of each new word created. Not sure if you can do this with quackle, so you may need a human opponent like to your lowest score wins games.
@mackmeller
@mackmeller 10 месяцев назад
Yeah can't do this in Quackle, but that would be fun against another top human player!

It may be too late to get a reply, but I am curious. If you were to replace the two blank tiles with any letters, what would they be?
@mackmeller
@mackmeller 9 месяцев назад
Do you mean in general or in this variant specifically? Hard to say in this variant, but in regular Scrabble I'd probably add another A and another E. I feel like there is probably one too many I's in the bag (after all, 3 I's is WAY worse than 3 A's or even 3 O's) and that would maybe help offset it a bit.
