The UK is hilarious to me. The cars you get the previous owner sells because of a light on the dash, or some scuffs on the door and they're like "oh bollocks its knackered, sell it for 5 quid" lol meanwhile here in the US people buy cars with well over 200k miles on them COMPLETELY trashed, I mean crushed on one or both ends, bits falling off, NO paint left, every service light on and they drive these things until they literally will not drive another inch. The MOT where I live is "oh it still kinda starts...pass". Such a stark difference in safety standards
What always amazes me with these kinds of videos is how they always go for a drive with basically no fuel in it, with a flashing light, warnings and all. My anxiety wouldn't allow me to do that.
Why do most Brits hate French cars😂. I owe a 2011 C4 Picasso 1,6THP Automatic Tendance. Drives absolutely great. Has 198.000 miles on it .yes she lives to drink alot, but sure worth the 4000 euros i paid for her
I've had a grand version of that car for a few years and it's been ultra reliable. It's always had a slight knock in the suspension but has never become bad enough to investigate. Transmission is automated manual gearbox, based on the six speed synchro found in a lot of manual PSA cars. Going from first gear to second just requires you to briefly back of the accelerator or as you did, use the paddle shifter. I was intrigued to see the left hand glovebox lid turned inside out. We have plenty of sun here in Australia but mine hasn't curled up yet!
Once upon a time, Magazines used to tell you how important it was to clean your car before sale. 30 years on "Needs a good clean" is part of the selling patois on eBay.
I watch a number of the you tube car sites and always amazed at the state some people keep their cars in. It's not expensive to spend £2 on the vacuums at car wash sites and then the cheapest drive through ones are £2.50 . It's not a valet but at least it shows a bit of care
I know, you think I wonder what your home is like?? Ok, times are a little hard, but run the hoover around it 1st! I went to buy a car years ago and there was a dried out dog poo in the boot!!!! I told him and he laughed. Had the cheek to say " You want it or not?" I just laughed and walked away from him.
my dad's got a grand picasso version of these with the same 1.6 hdi and the egs auto. does change gear quite slowly but thats just how they are. we had a similar suspension knock and it was something in front suspension but wasnt an expensive fix i dont think. yours seems to be a top spec exclusive as well so a few little extras like the auto climate controls and scented air freshener!
Got a 2012 C4GP,tell ya dad might be worth using the paddle shifters to change up from 1st into 2nd, find its much smoother and then sticking it into auto as auto changes at low speeds on mine are a dogs dinner compared to manual paddle shift changes
Just so you are aware, thats the 2.0 hdi and not the 1.6 hdi. If you put the gearbox into manual mode and rev it out to 4000rpm and change gear with the paddles it changes gear quite fast. I have a C4 GP 1.6 and and two C4 picasso 5 seaters, one with 1.6 hdi and the other with the 2.0 hdi.
You could test the battery/altanator on the road test by turning all the electrical stuff on, like everything lights rear window heater fan on full with the wipers going radio on full blast etc The steering will normally go stiffer if it's electrical assisted as the voltage drops
I think that’s probably the best action moving this on. It’s a “Shitroen” and can be problematic. I know Matt of High Peak hates these things and there’s probably good reason.
I took the newer face lifted version out for a test drive, the seats were fantastic so comfy, only issue was the gear change, massive clonk when changing, search online and they said there were solenoid valves which played up and it was expensive, I really wanted it, best drive I had in ages
I had a 2011 2.0 HDI manual one of these in Diablo red with piano black roof. extremely rare. Also had cream Alcantara interior with heated powered seats. it was a real stunner with a full history, quick and super comfy but it was constantly breaking. Part exchanged it for a Mitsubishi after 18 months. have a friend who bought the 1.6 auto. has spent a fortune on it. YOU MADE THE RIGHT CHOICE.
The gearboxes on them Picassos are nothing but trouble. Get it sorted and trade it immediately. Electronically controlled I believe, loads on eBay as spares.
I once made the mistake of buying a Peugeot back in the early 90's. Never again. I'd much rather undergo a rectal examination using a cactus, than buy another French car.
@@Brian-om2hh I've a 1993 Peugeot 306 and our family have had maybe Renaults, they've been up there with the most satisfying and reliable cars we've owned.... admittedly they weren't MK2 Meganes or anything as they're crap.
Hi we had one of these cars and we found a break in the wire loom at the back of the battery box and it's a common fault and can cause all kinds of faults from memory it's the purple wire which comes from the box on top off the battery
I have the diesel auto 1.6 grand C4, 2008, great car, been in the family for about 7 years, never had any major issues, all wear and tear stuff. And 45 to 50 mpg.... All day long... (Urban)
I wouldn't worry too much about a notchy gear change. My mother-in-law had one from new and it was exactly the same, like a punch in the back every time it changed up. Very quirky and practical, granted, but also not one I'd be keen on being on the hook for any big repairs for the next 6 months.
I have had this vehicle since 2007 still driving it today 7 seater use it for the Grandkids I have replaced normal stuff brakes tiers radiator l have put a new radiator and put on two new sills replaced cam belt and water pump it’s manual with real comfortable interior and as 140 thousand plus diesel 1600 cc l like it cheaper than buying a new car serviced every year. Good cars
the Picasso is not an auto box, its manual with a clutch with the gears and clutch controlled [ slowly ] by a little "robot" the control is self learning and needs reset occasionally to get clean changes back, these are just as economical as the the purely manual version, well worth £500 👍 it would be handy if there is a fault code stored
Sounds like a wise decision to move it one, could be minor fault or one that you need to keep chasing, better not to gamble as they are hardly the most desirable vehicles even when working well.
Spot on...... If I were James, I'd be having a celebratory cup of tea immediately after it left his premises........ I speak as a former Peugeot owner. If you like your motoring to have an element of chance, wondering what's going to go wrong next, and when, then a nice Froggie-mobile could be just the job.....
I really rate Citroen Picasso's, they don't deserve the hate they get. Although the automatic ones of that shape (semi automatic actually, they're just a robotic manual) are absolutely terrible on all accounts. Horrible and uncooperative to drive. I've got an old Xsara Picasso myself as my big useful runner and it's comfortable, reliable, cheap to fix and maintain. It's a 1.6 petrol so a bit gutless and thirsty but other than that I'd say infinitely better than a Zafira or whatever. And manufacturers just don't make those sort of MPVs any more
Wonder if front springs are broken as it looks low, that would put strain on the steering so maybe explain the pas light, also would explain the rattles.
there good for the money, it has a ac fridge in the middle, the silver knob in the middle comes off and you can put a air refresher in it by Citroen, the gear boxes are abit slow at changing but there reliable , dpf are common faults on these motor way 1s a week sorts this
James if I were you I’d trade the Citroen C4 Picasso out unless there’s paperwork in its history for gearbox replacement. The EGC auto gearbox is a nightmare on these for failing and it’s a £2k-£2.5k job to replace the electronics in the gearbox. It’s an automated manual rather than a proper torque converter auto box. Values are fairly low on these as well so not worth taking the chance on unless it’s already had the work done previously.
On the MK1 & early MK2’s the gearbox is an automated manual (like the Smart) rather than a ‘traditional’ torque converter auto, so gear changes are a bit ponderous. They don’t have the greatest reputation for reliability, but if they all get abused the way our one does, I’m not surprised!
Mine is EGS gearbox, yes, the infamous EGS. This one i Exclusive, so it has air suspension in the back. Mine is Business package, I have it for about 4 years. Yes, they are prone to electronic problems. But nothing that other manufacturer's have.
Hi Guys I thought I would update this thread with the solution to my power steering problem, the car went into a citroen specialist and the fault was diagnosed as a blown 80A maxi fuse and a dirty connection on the Power Steering pump, sorted with electrical contact cleaner.
Love how the auto change at a flick at the top of the column tis a tribute to the original Citroen DS

I've a C3 Picasso that has had its electric power steering motor fail. Apparently they did a recall - I'd already changed mine before I discovered that - so maybe an intermittent fault, or a sign it is on its way out?.
You were driving a single clutch robot, it's normal they change a little rougher than turbine boxes. Thouse cars are really good as long you avoid the 1.6 thp the bmw/psa. I have seen almost 600.000 km woth the 2.0 hdi, also the 1.6 hdi works well if you look after certain issues. The clutch/flywheel needs replacement after 200.000 km onwards. Electrics work well as long as you keep the fuseboxes dry. Sometimes behind the battery you might find some electric wires corroded.
These are a pile of scrap had 2 1,6 hdi both 2011 both had replacement turbo both had numerous electrical faults after electrical faults the auto box is known to break all the time. I would check the fuse box under bonnet mine had a swimming pool in it causing the engine to try and start itself without a key or me in car. I would never touch one ever good luck with the sale
scrap man did ok on this, I had a 99t 318i cabrio and a 2000 slk200 both no mot, and sat a while ,no value in doing them up bought the pair £300 weighed them both in scrap £375 for the Bmw, £380 for the Merc , made a days pay and no grief with buyers ,adverts etc, etc
These are canbus wired and faults that come up on the dash could be literally anything even if not connected to what has actually failed. The egr valve failing can throw up faults that are nothing to do with the engine for example. I have the 2.0hdi grand version. NSF abs sensor failed and it came up with many faults on dash including handbrake, gearbox plus it would also make the engine switch off. Crankshaft sensor did the same when it failed with the engine switching off at random. They are great when running well but can be very problematic. Erratic electrical faults are also caused by the wiring loom being corroded behind the battery too.
I had one of these years ago. The automated manual box is not great, I drove it in manual mode most of the time. Steep hills really confused it in auto mode, it would change up rather than down gears half way up the hill, then the engine would labour and then it would go back down a gear with a big pause inbetween. They're all ponderous. the one I had was ex-mobility with only 20k on it.
@@ardongrainford8004 I'm amazed it's still going. Early DV6 unit which is trouble in itself, coupled to a grenade in the form of a gearbox. She's right to get rid.
This is the kind of car I see selling on Facebook marketplace where people want a cheapy under £1k to run into the ground or while theirs is off the road etc. I do think it’s too good to scrap but like you say needs brutally honest advertising.
Funnily enough a customer called at the pitch this morning with a c4 auto, he'd lost reverse gear, I suggested try a new battery as he'd been jump starting it, people think cars like this are old cortinas.
@@Brian-om2hh Definately! I had a friend with the exact same model, who ended up limping it the garage and part ex'ing it! The Auto's in these are are timebombs!
Biggest problem is it's a Citroen 😂 Yeah it's worth a punt but it'll cost you more than the £200 low mileage Rover at the auction a couple of weeks ago 🤷
"Economy Mode Active" that quick is often a sign of a sagging battery :) That's a Citroen power-saver mode that shuts down unneeded electrics when the battery voltage drops (and the engine isn't running) to hopefully have enough left to restart. At that age, it's probably pending a new battery - cold mornings will be the giveaway.
No it's not necessarily a sign of needing a new battery, it just means you've left the ignition on for too long and the BSI has detected a current drain that could flatten the battery so it shuts the offending item down
CRANK POSITION SENSOR My C5 with this Engine has had this fault. Crank sensor reads faulty engine cuts out then power steering light comes on doesn't always give a fault code either
I have a C4 Picasso auto 2010. £1250 for a clutch kit at Citroen, no-one else would do it for the paddle gearshift model. Gear change was improved but still ponderous.
The gearbox is not a true auto. It’s a piloted manual using hydraulic actuators. Watch out for dual mass flywheel issues. Electrical issues and engine and dpf issues.
Ran one of these for about 5 years, 2013-18. The sun lifts those top cobbies on all of them, looks dreadful Looks like an exclusive with air rear suspension - that needs to go asap otherwise it’ll collapse on you. Nice car to drive at about 47 to the gallon, VED is a bit steep.
you never mentioned the warped glove box lids ? £336.00 each from citroen i got a pair from ebay in lovely condition for £85.00 !! cleaned and then trated them with meguires uv protectant and will leave a heat reflecting cover over the dash board in hot weather as this is a common problem with the glove box lids mine is a 2009 1.6 THP petrol turbo with just 34,000 miles on full dealership service history i owner from new brought for £950 going for mot on the 18/10/23 only light on is the abs sensor fault put a reader on and its showing drivers side abs sensor is faulty so hopefully get that reolaced and should hopefully have a nice car ?
These are not a pure automatic but use a standard manual box and clutch with solenoids that change gears which is why they are a bit jerky called an EGS electronic gear selection would happily pay 2k for this when its been gone through
Got a 2012 C4GP engine fault repair needed, got the diagbox and cables, literally the stop start system is knackered and that's it, lot of times with citroens engine fault sounds major and you dig into it and its usually just electrics playing silly buggers
Any chance those reverse lights are causing a drain in the battery? Noticed in your walk round they’re on……… scrap that idea just seen the clip of being in reverse……… although you mentioning economy mode beeping means low battery……… as for gear change my dads got a 2012 berlingo auto and is the same changing from first to second and his only has 47k
£2999 car up in Lancashire that. Even if you have to put £500 into it you ll easy make £1500.. unless prices down south have dropped ..but no signs up.north yet.
I suspect that the battery is on its last legs, that "economy mode" warning is battery related, run the car and turn it off, wait 10 seconds and unless you can still operate the electric windows the battery is caput, 👍
The dash pocket on passenger side looks bent and I think I heard the clutch fly wheel rattle on first start up. Still good bargain at what you paid for it
I have a C4(2014) and have the same knock on suspension, had top mount strut/ bearing done, did the drop link myself, and I still have the noise, all seems ok on the ramp, so going in for suspension shocker and hope that cures it. Very frustrating as I've had 3 places inspect it and nothing of note found really so far. Grrr. Cars....
I did exactly the same, stripped things down twice, strut top bearing, drop links, customer was getting cross, couldn't find the rattle at all, yes it was the shocker.
@@roystonvehicles9129 As suspected it WAS the shocker, had new shocker and top mount bearing kit and it's completely cured any clunking or creaking on the steering. Nice and quiet now. Cheers for the advice.
The gearbox is not a proper automatic. It is a manual box with a clutch and an automated gear change. Slow and ponderous gear changes are a characteristic and this one seems to work fine 👍
I had a Peugoet that cut out on the M6 just before losing the hard shoulder. I was very lucky. I looked at Renault Scenics and C4 Picassos and they seem to cut out an awful lot. Needless to say with 2 young kids I "lost faith" and ditched the car especially as the highly rated Peugeot "specialists" found no fault, did several hours of diagnostics costing hundreds of pounds and it happened again. Never happened with the Toyota petrols I've owned.
Can't understand why people prefer SUV's to MPV's these days. I would get Moores to give it a once over (might be a cheap fix) and your mobile valeter to give it a clean before you move it on through the trade. If retailing I'd take the towbar off.
Got a C4 2014with a similar knock and after drop link and top bearing its still there, having shocker done next week and hopefully you're correct as there is no evidence of anything else wrong. 👍
@@andynightingale7335 Get someone to rock the car side to side as aggressively as possible while you feel both top mount nuts. You will always feel knocking shocks there on them. It's always the Peugeot/Citroens that do it, although I vaguely remember coming across it on some of the earlier Vauxhalls back in the day as well
@@andynightingale7335 yes, if you absolutely can't find any play in anything else it will be the shock, you can't tell as it's under tension with the spring.
@@roystonvehicles9129 as suspected it WAS the shocker, also made sure with a totally new bearing kit as well and it's completely cured any clunk or creaking on the steering. Quiet as a mouse now. Thanks for the advice m8 👍
