‘Twas the Tuesday before Christmas and all through the shop. The talk was of botched jobs and a block for the chop! A rebore that fitted a massive top hat. The cost to replace - 3.5k plus VAT! As the strip down continued o’er the season of good will. The parts that were damaged gave me such a deep chill. If I owned the motor I’d surely be pissed. Dear Santa please sit back - I’ve got a huge list! Attention to detail was sadly so lacking. So RE Performance they now get my backing. If a job is worth doing. It’s worth doing well. And this vid is the proof of a rebuild from hell! I’m amazed as I watch and I’m really so glad. I’ve never experienced a job done so bad. So it’s now getting sorted by a guy whose no fool. He knows how to handle a cool Snap-On’ tool! So what if old Snap-On don’t sponsor RE. Who knows what will happen next year - wait and see! But for now let me say as I sit with my beer. Thank you for the content - Have a Happy New Year!

New to the channel and massively impressed with the level and scope of your knowledge . There’s blokes in the pub reminiscing their teens early 20’s / discussing the best way they found to stop A series engines leaking everything at the first hint of a frost…….then there’s fellas like you out of this world clever with most things mechanical. The way you must retain information is mind blowing … it must be by the way you seamlessly go between cars and bikes and just do what needs doing without drama (ok with good editing assisting the omission of the occasional melt down) admittedly not a bike bloke …. One leg dictates - or at least makes me prefer, a nice safe metal box all round me. But watching you work reminds me what kind of technician I dreamt of being whilst incompetently changing the plugs oil and filter on a maestro. Then like most, I grew up - realised how useless I actually was and left it to those who can. Watching you examine the efforts of others and highlight errors in their work is fantastic and only makes me realise how woefully incapable some ‘specialist builders’ are. Is it they are poorly informed or do you think a lot of issues are born from a desire to literally have customers pants down? I think lying about installing uprated components is blatantly being dishonest but the reuse of things that should be renewed every time is surely a mix of being a naughty Berty B.S hitter and a full bore tea leaf. Or am I giving them too much credit? Luckily techs like you exist to put humpty dumpty engines back together again ! Gorging on catching up on the channels vids but really keen to see the RS3 engine doing what it should how it should and from an old farts perspective that noble and it’s discarded Sony ‘flip off’ reminds me of days gone by where I thought my Hyundai S-Coupe mvti was ‘pure rapid’ and that stereo was as cool as me! Treat that noble kindly do the best to it you can. If that means dipping the chassis I’d do it. The old girl deserves it ….and please put the Sony back it’s heartbreaking !

When you build it, please show us what you measure/check during assembly. Seems to me that wouldn't have helped the previous build of this motor given the suspicions surrounding the liners but give us an idea to how careful you NEED to be with this stuff, eapecially when you're not just buzzing the oem parts together (Ie: stuff you already know is designed to work together).

I know feck all about engine building or even car mechanics for that matter! However, I found this really interesting from a number of perspectives. 1. Pointing out errors as you see them and managing to resist naming the original engine builder. 2. Fault finding and attention to detail. 3. Explaining things to numpties like me in simple terms. Keep up the great work and if you want some tips on how to video then narrate over it give Vehcor channel a quick watch of any one of his videos as he excels at it!

Regarding the aluminium bolts, could it be because of the ally block? Different metals react to moisture/corrosion and sometimes if different materials have been used, the bolts can be impossible to remove.

Thinking outloud.....Often aluminum (or other non-std fastener materials) are used for thermal expansion mismatch purposes. While, as you state, it's possible weight savings is the reason for the Alum fasteners, the coeff of thermal expansion of 8-12ppm/K of steel in this temp range is much lower than 16-24ppm/K for aluminum. As things heat up with steel bolts and aluminum flanges/bodies, the bolt tension would increase significantly (depending on free length) because the bodies are expanding more than the fasteners, potentially yielding the far weaker aluminum. Then when we go cold again, the locally yielded aluminum has very little preload remaining (if any). So they used aluminum fasteners to mitigate the issue altogether?

Excellent work fella - just wondering why the previous build used washers under the lifters? - was it a really janky way to gain more valve lift?

No, it’s to remove the chance of the lifter backing off at high rpm by getting the lifter to sit deeper in the stroke. Just not needed and cause the lifter to actually jack up and remove all lash.

Hi REP, Thanks a lot for this informative video -- I really liked the closeup shots of the engine parts so I could see the build quality of the gasket. At this point, I am not sure whether it is best to keep my Zhiyun Crane 2 for the next few years or upgrade to the RS3 Pro. I have had the Zhiyun Crane 2 since 2018 and have been using it to make walking videos -- feel free to check them out on my channel. It is calibrated nicely to compensate for sudden turn movements (good amount of deadband). Though the micro jitters and z axis bounce movement can bother me sometimes -- especially on intense hikes. I am wondering in your opinion whether it is worth it to upgrade from the Zhiyun Crane 2 to the DJI RS3 Pro?

Holy Moly..... What a mess. That is shocking to say the least, plus the owner as said in the video, has got a double cost now! I hope the owner agrees to come onto the channel and provide his/her story of the history of the engine. Obviously, whilst this is being documented, things will be kept under wraps, but the first garage should be footing the bill for this, especially if they're advertising themselves as a 'Specialist'. Wow.... Unbelievable engine mess.
