3D End Grain Cutting Board Class: lddy.no/stih
This week’s woodworking build video is wooden knife sheaths for my friends who work at one of my favorite restaurants. These things are made from zebrawood, walnut, wenge and leopardwood. I finished them with wax thread and they came out so cool. I really can’t wait to see what you create! Let me know what you’d like to see next. Thanks for watching! Please like, comment and subscribe. Cheers!

Nice Project, Man! I love the genuine thoughtfulness behind it, and I also love how you don't hide your mistakes with camera cuts, i.e. the small tilt by the Router. Like you always say, man Woodworking isn't about being perfect, it's about knowing how to fix your mistakes, and I always find myself repeating that in my head every time I build something. Let me first say those sheaths are beautiful. I’m a chef who got into work working through rehandle Japanese knives and making sayas (sheath) for them. Google “saya pins” for a quicker, easier, longer term, and more food safe option of keeping the knife in place.
@Kavik79
@Kavik79 4 года назад
Was going to say the exact same thing. Sure, magnets are an option like some people are saying, but they're weak to lateral movement and could wiggle off without much effort. Pins are more traditional, more secure, and ensure you absolutely 100% never get that little bit of the heel poking out where it can bite your finger. I have a few I need to work on handles and sayas for here myself, and it will be pins on all of them, for sure.

Nice idea :) I don't know that much about knives but before you go thru with it, check how magnetic the knife is, I made a bird feeder with removable stainless steel bowl recently (held in place with magnet) and it barely attracted. Ended up having to epoxy a washer to the base to get it to magnetise.

Everyone is saying magnet magnet magnet, but it wont work with a lot of stainless metals. I am a fan of waxed hemp. I use it for many things. Ive done a few wrapped tethers like that too and people love them. I wouldnt do it on a belt knife, as you want quick acess. However a magnet button on a handle strap would work as well as a snap. Being a handle or a hilt (like this one) strap, it would not care if the knife is stainless or carbon. I like the wrap on this though. Good balance of thick and thin. Id say that twine is 20lb, and just once or twice over the heel of the blade would hold it plenty good for a kitchen knife transport. Any heavier and you risk busting the sheath, rather than the string. Good choices. I might use zebra wood for my next knife handle, and make it a matching sheath. I like that grain.

Very cool! As many others say, it would have bee nice to see the reactions at the new sheaths. I'm assuming though that the recipients did not want to be on video? Also, contrary to almost every one else, I really like the "leather wrap" lock. The only reason there would be to use a magnet in the sheath was if the knife is being put in and pulled out of the sheath constantly all day long rather than just being used for transport like I'm guessing these sheaths will be used for.
@bertmorenstein3000
@bertmorenstein3000 4 года назад
Nice job, they look great. One thinbg about magnets is that stainless steel knives may not have enough attraction to work well. Japanese knives have used wooden sheathesor 'sayas' for centuries. They use ho wood which is similar to poplar. Light and straight grained wood that is soft and won't damage very delicate edges. Instead of a tie, the edge side of the saya extends past the choil and sits just below the handle. It is held in place with a bamboo peg that prevents the knives from sliding out. It is the simplest and cheapest solution. And they don't finish the wood. They rely on wood's natural property oif not harboring bacteria for very long

The name you're looking for is Saya, and sealing the inside is not necessary. Traditionally they are cut with chisels and they are kept in the saya by a wooden pin, not twine.
@JASinIL2006
@JASinIL2006 17 часов назад
I have made a number of saya (sheaths) for my Japanese chef knives. Yours are very nice. I never finish the inside, though, for two reasons. First, if any moisture gets inside, I want the wood to wick it away from the blade; this is especially true for reactive, carbon steel knifes. Second, I don’t want a knife rubbing against a finished surface every time I slide it in or out of the saya. Finally, no self-respecting chef is going to put a dirty knife into a saya. If they do, they deserve whatever happens.
