SCRAPPED?! Plymouth Sundance!

90 thousand original miles! This is actually a fairly clean example. Yes I know there are nicer ones out there. But for this one to end up in a junkyard, it’s in pretty dang good shape. No rust, not rot, and everything is held together for the most part. Put some lipstick on this pig and take it to the county fair ! Might win first prize !

I actually bought a brand new 1989 Sundance 2.5 turbo RS auto. It was black cherry paint with gun metal dark gray on the bottom portion. It had a burgundy cloth interior. It was a beautiful car, but the build quality was horrendous and more squeaks and rattles than you'd dare imagine. I used a lot of silicone glue to quiet the thing down. For its time it was a very fast little car. I managed to put about 80k miles on it. It was still very pretty and strong and made someone else a great car.

This car always holds a special place in my heart. My late mother drove a Black Cherry '92 Sundance America. She had gotten it brand new about 9 months before I was born, and it ran like a champ until I think I was almost 13 or 14 years old (I'm 26 now). The steering column fell apart and we didn't have the money or a handyman to repair it so it pretty much got junked. Despite being a kid I remember this car needed very little maintenence and was very dependable! It's a shame because these cars are becoming harder to find through the years.

My first car was a maroon 1986 Plymouth Turismo. I owned it from 1995-1998, and it was no Chick Magnet but it ran forever well over 100K that I put on it. I remember that I went through 3 set sets of outside door handles, because of the cheap ass plastic they kept breaking off during the freezing weather. I learned how to climb through the hatchback, because both door handles had broken off. At the time I was so glad to get rid of it, because I had just bought a Pontiac Formula. Looking back I actually miss that old Plymouth.

I owned a '91 Sundance, bought it with about 12k miles on it. Basic transportation with automatic and AC. The test drive revealed an annoying rattle in the dash. The dealership claimed they fixed it, but they never really did. Bought an extended warranty for it, which wasn't a bad idea since the AC needed repair every few years. Blew its head gasket at about 105k. Valve cover gasket needed service a couple times. Had it rustproofed but the bottom inside door panels developed rust anyway. Sold it after 13 years of ownership with about 120k on it.

That white smoke tells the story by itself🤣🤣 You can see that the radiator hoses had been recently replaced due to overheating along with the radiator and thermostat. It's still in remarkable condition for it's age however other than the head being warped. It's going to need a full head overhaul to put it back on the road, and most people looking at a car like this to drive can't afford to pay the bill to fix it right. So that's why it's in a salvage yard

That '91 Sundance is a decent auction flipper! If I were you, I would clean it up, paint the bumpers, replace the VC gasket and front shocks, fix the radio and AC, remount the missing dash piece, and you may double your estimated flip price. The gas cap is located on the passenger side so that you can put a gallon of gas in it away from the road without becoming roadkill if someone sideswipes the driver's side. My sister had a '94 Sundance that she drove up to 200k before she junked it. BTW, I posted an ode to you on Corvette Ben's "Will It Run? 1953 Oldsmobile part 12" video comments.

Be careful on that engine. I had two and both the bolts on the water pump pulley came loose. You can guess what happened with the water pump not spinning correctly. So be sure to check the pulleys and belts periodically. The shadow with 2.5 was much nicer than the Sundance with 2.2 turbo. I enjoyed driving the heck out of both. Unfortunately the valve cover gasket is separate rubber and cork pieces. Where the pieces come together it will leak. Some permatex spray gasket cement helps. Anything else will just squeeze out when assembled. Cheers and nice ride. 😊

My brother bought a 1984 Aries wagon new. At the time, U thought, are you crazy! I expected it to be junk. It was not! He doled it out great abuse. I loved driving it . I thought of it as an appliance. It had a AM digital radio! That car , far exceeded my expectations!

Man, I'd buy that car in a heartbeat. Those cars were nowhere near as bad as (way too many) people made them out to be. They are actually very reliable and super easy to work on, and parts are dirt cheap. With routine maintenance they can easily get 300,000 miles when properly taken care of. I still see the odd one putting around...and that's here in Canada where the friggin' road salt eats cars way before they die. If this car was posted near me, I'd buy it no questions asked. Sold! 😁

That odometer probably quit working years ago, notice how the trip is all zeros? That means someone reset it and because the gears inside are broken, it quit counting. Super common issue on K cars.

I kind of think these disposable cars that were everywhere back in the day are kind of cool to own now.

thanks for making this video. it really takes me back. my first car was a 90 sundance. i had forgotten about that ping noise when you close the hood. mine finally died when a dry rotted fuel line started a fire. it was a piece of crap but i still miss it.

My mom had a turquoise 1994 Plymouth Sundance. It was a great car. I wish I could get this one... There aren't many of these left that I know about Jay...

Nice, but how long until that turquoise paint flaked off? It was a big problem with a few colors, incl. that one.
@David-wy9vz
@David-wy9vz 5 лет назад
@@robsrandomness7824 Yeah I know 90's Chrysler and Dodge vehicles had a problem with the paint coming off. I believe the whole time she had the car it kept most of the original paint. That was from 1994-2001 I think. It was still running and driving when it was kind of side swiped by a truck causing some damage to the front quarter area. The insurance company totalled it though because of the age and mileage. It had 120k+ on it when it was totalled out though.

About 2 years ago, back when I was within my first year of using Craigslist, I found a lot of Plymouth Sundances and Pontiac Sunbirds for $300-$800, and because of that, and that I really like 1980s and 1990s cars that not many other people like, I have wanted one since then. Most of the Sunbirds I found were white coupes, and one Sunbird I remember was a red convertible that was $300.

The white smoke out the tailpipe might be the headgasket going out, in typical Chrysler 2.2L fashion. That might explain why no one could sell it and it wound up in the scrapyard.

If Grand Tour comes back to the USA, this should be the car James, Richard, or Jeremy have to drive if their "cool" beater breaks down. That would be a good slice of humble pie lol.

These K cars have become a really car with the teens up to the mid 20 somethings as JMD style builds out here in the Southwest and West. I live in the Southwest Triangle (Northwest Arizona, Southern Nevada, Southeast California) and they are ALL over out here and even have a couple of clubs that just for these cars.
