How much copper is in AC Compressor? Today We are going to find out.
I'll be scrapping an air conditioner compressor. Every air compressor is going to be different. This one is pretty large. Free copper is a wonderful thing. It might be worth removing the copper from the compressor than scrapping the compressor to the scrap yard as a whole.
I hope you enjoy the video. Please subscribe, like, and comment. If you know of anyone that might enjoy this video. Make sure to share it with them.

I used to do this the same way. But I had someone show me a much faster and easier way to remove the copper without ever having to cut the copper at all. I just use an air chisel or I use my little 3lb 20” mini sledgehammer and an old axe head or a tree felling wedge to split the side open. Sometimes I have to split 2 sides but once it is split you can pull all the copper out in one piece. And there’s usually no mess to clean up afterwards either. But ik this was a year ago so idk Maybe you do it differently now lol. But regardless still a good video. Short simple straight to the point and informative. So thank you for that. To many others on here that make 30-45 minute videos that never go anywhere. Just a waste of time. They just talk the whole time but never say anything. Keep up the good work sir.

Thank you so much! Yeah I hate those videos. They provide almost 0 information. Yes I actually used a machete to split the copper in half in a recent video. I also used an air chisel to get the copper out. 👍👍👍

I would use a diamond blade cut off wheel to cut one end of the motor. Then i would use a hammer/rotary drill to chisel out the copper its the same as using an air chisel.

Excellent video, I can tell you , you are right. I made one heck of a mess the first time I scraped one of those the oil was all over a very valuable beam of wood. Lesson learned. The only thing I do differently is I prefer a grinder with a cut off for cutting off the end of the windings. I feel a cleaner cut makes it easier to work the copper out. All said Excellent instructions.

I need to see if I've got a grinding wheel somewhere, I've got 10 or 11 mid size compressors in my garage from RV AC units I pulled the rads and lines out of. I had no idea there was that much copper in the compressors. Thank you for the content !

almost 4 lbs in cu. definitely worth it, generally speaking about $12 in copper plus you get the steel as well, about 50 lb of steel around $4. minus the blades but 2-3 compressors (once drained) an hour is very reasonable.

cut of both ends of the copper winding or the ends of the compressor? The inside of the compressor has tabs which won't let the winding be tapped out. I felt it was easier a line down the middle and spread it.

@HeinrichsMade
@HeinrichsMade Год назад
It could probably be done around 10m. The biggest problem is getting the copper out of the winding. I think scrappers get $5 a motor. Depending on the motor, it's probably more profitable to scrap the motor as is. Some motors don't even have a lb worth of copper in it.

Too many people do it this way. The time and the costs of blades are not factored in enough. The way this is done is the most popular and not the easiest and cost effective. There's other ways.. Plus, there is no way scrapping one or even a few of these is worth the time. Volume is essential.
@HeinrichsMade

I'll admit there is an easier way. 1 would be to have an air chisel. There is always an easier way. I've seen videos of them doing it in India. I would definitely like to hear your way of doing it. 👍

This approach is efficient and will save on blades. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-CpaLHh12ApU.html There's another approach with side grinder... He cutes one cut, but goes about it with a curved approach starts bottom curse towards top then curves back... The casing just comes apart and all the pieces are there to be taken. How much time did it take to gather $10 worth of copper? It's not exactly low hanging fruit! Bear in mind the cost of blades and an extra trip to dispose of the oil. As a retired HVAC service tech, I had access to hundreds of compressors like that, but i intuitively knew it wasn't worth the time and trouble to separate the copper. This video confirmed I was right, so thanks 😉
@HeinrichsMade
@HeinrichsMade 4 месяца назад
My friend is an HVAC tech and he does this for extra money. I actually have a waste oil burner. So, I don't have to take a trip anywhere to dispose of the oil. It also keeps me active. So I'm not sitting on the couch doing nothing. haha Also, I don't sell the copper for money. My hobby is melting metals. I make stuff from it. Check out my other videos and you'll see.
