Learn how to make a mug rug using the quilt as you go (QAYG) technique. Kim shows you how to use your fabric strings (long rectangular pieces) to make a quick strip-pieced mug rug.
This is a great way to use up your fabric scraps and makes a great gift, especially if you are short on time.
As you'll be using the quilt as you go method, when you've finished making the top of the mug rug, you're done. Kim shows you step-by-step how to construct this fast project.

I like this - she is easy to listen to, provides enough up front instruction without unnecessary chit chat so you know what's going on then she runs through parts at accelerated speed. You see and learn what Kim is doing but don't have to slog through each piece which is good for her and us. Wonderful!!! I've never done a 'quilt as you go' anything, but need some small project right now and this is perfect. Thank you!!

I think this a great idea. I made one and it looked great but I messed up on the binding. I mean't to give it as a gift but I have to make another one and keep this one. They really come out looking very impressive. Thank you for this tutorial. I had to subscribe!

I love the tutorial and just completed my own mug rug. Just have to bind it. Can this same method be used to make a quilt?
@Chatterboxquilts
@Chatterboxquilts 6 лет назад
I would suggest that you create individual blocks and then stitch them together to make a larger quilt.

@Chatterboxquilts
@Chatterboxquilts 7 лет назад
HI Diane: Yes, I have lot of other tutorials :) I've recently been uploading videos on how to make simple pieced blocks that you might find helpful. You can view them in the Quick Quilt Blocks playlist at bit.ly/2hY8d5l. I also have another video on piecing with strips and strings which is similar to the mug rug one. You can find it at ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MAen2FWB4vg.html. If you have any suggestions as to future video ideas, please let me know :)

Glad you liked the video. I call it "strippy" as I'm using fabric strips ;)

That was fantastic. What size mug rug did you end up with?
@Chatterboxquilts
@Chatterboxquilts 6 лет назад
HI Sonia: I'm not quite sure - I'll have to go measure it to get an accurate measurement, but it's big enough for a mug and a small plate - probably a little bigger than some mug rugs which I often think are just a tad small for more than 1 cookie ;)

I made another one in different purple fabrics. It turned out great. I really enjoy your videos because they are very easy to understand. Just curious, what size is the one in this video? Also, what is the size of the average mug rug? The one I made was 8 by 11 but it seemed a little small.
@Chatterboxquilts
@Chatterboxquilts 5 лет назад
I think this one was a bit smaller than 8" x 11" - I'd have to find it and measure it for sure ;) Some mug rugs are much smaller - there doesn't seem to be a standard size. I like them big enough for a mug and a plate.

Hi Faith: I bought this in a package of notions from Quilt in a Day - not sure if they still have it or not. Since I recorded this video (a few years ago), I've bought Violet Craft's seam roller. You can find it at amzn.to/2S9p7nl.

Hi Bonnie: This is a little pressing tool that you can use for small seams. You can see what it looks like by going to www.keepsakequilting.com/paper-seam-presser-set-of-2.

I am new to your site. Like your tutorials and your style of presentation. On a side-bar note, I have noticed that the videos are on the dark side. In some cases, it is hard to see what you are working on. Maybe be my system.
@Chatterboxquilts
@Chatterboxquilts 7 лет назад
Hi Linda: Thanks for watching! Have you checked the lightness/darkness setting on your computer? This may be the problem as the video that you were watching is quite light/bright when I view it and I haven't had this comment from other viewers. I hope this resolves the issue for you.

do you still enjoy your Janome
@Chatterboxquilts
@Chatterboxquilts 7 лет назад
Hi Rick: Yes, I do still enjoy using my Janome 8900. I've been using it to do all the stitching on my blocks in the One World Quilt Along (www.quiltfusion.com/one-world). I've been sewing some teeny tiny pieces using very short stitch length with Superior Thread's MonoPoly thread and the 8900 has sewed like a champ!

I haven't worked with that model, but my general suggestions when looking for a new sewing machine is to decide what you are going to do with it and what features you must have. There are so many extras on today's machines, that you need to be clear on what you really need before you can make a decision. Also, there are usually sale periods, so keep an eye out for those if you are in the market for a new machine. Good luck with your decision :)

This would of been a better tutorial if you had completed it to the end of project finish for viewers.

Hi Diane: The tutorial was to show how to do quilt as you go with strip piecing and as different quilters use various forms of binding, I thought I'd leave that choice up to the individual quilter.

What size is your project?
@Chatterboxquilts
@Chatterboxquilts 4 года назад
Gosh, I'm not quite sure as I made this some time ago. It's a mug rug, so definitely smaller than a place mat. Usually they are about 6" x 8".
