Soil-compost sifter made from scrap parts. .25" mesh hardware cloth backed up by 2x3" welded wire. Found it useful to have the wheels track higher than the box bottom to keep soil from sifting under them. Works well, will clog if the soil is too wet.

simple but effective idea. Brill idea and thought provoking.

Something for a small speed bump every 6" along that track would help with vibrating it. Also some guide boards along the side like runners may help but may just increase resistance. Good work out I'm sure. Nice invention.

This sure beats the piece of expanded metal laying across the top of the wheelbarrow and rubbing the dirt through it with my hands like I've been doing. I'm going to start keeping my eye out for stuff to use to build one of these. Very ingenious.

The wheels are the rear wheel assembly off a tricycle someone left on the side of the road. I bet the wheels off a junked lawnmower would work just as well, but you might need to rig up an axle. I do think it is helpful to have the bottom of the box lower than the level of the track, so dirt doesn't get on it.

Thanks for the tip. I know I have the wheels from an old push mower in a box somewhere. I was thinking of taking them off a dolly but I'd much rather give up the lawnmower wheels for this.

Great idea - I did a quick fix by using a sack barrow with my existing garden sieve tied on with cable ties. Ran it on two boards - not ideal but my efficiency was triple just using the sieve. Also easier on my back as normally you twist from side to side to riddle soil with a sieve - now pushing/pulling is a lot safer!

I just subbed, the three wheel bike rear axle set up is a cool repurpose idea.

Good work. I made something similar to this, you can see it on my page. One of the issues I had with mine was the same issue you are having: how to efficiently dump the waste. I'm planning a stationary sifter over my compost bins...I'll eventually do a vid when I figure it out. cheers.

The tricycle wheels are a brilliant idea! Thanks for subscribing, I subbing back!

They're a little bit of a challenge to attach securely. I'm becoming a big fan of wheels off of junked lawnmowers. Easy to just find a long bolt for an axle and off you go.

Sorry Timmy, your tricycle has gotta go. 😉

just found your vid here, yrs since you posted it now, so had to ask, how did the sifter survive? Did it get set off to the side, evolved or replaced since you shot this vid? Great idea, but it kills me your not looking at the rock for artifacts. Sure it slows you down, but there is nothing like reaching back in time and pulling out something someone made for you a heck of a long time ago.

I used it off and on for about a year and then the handle broke because it was made out of a very cheap leg assembly from a folding table. Its sitting in the barn waiting for me to construct some kind of new handle for it.

if you had it double the depth with the screen in the middle and possibly larger wheels you could set it up, perhaps, so you tip it over at the end. Either end and the top becomes the bottom/sieve without having t lift it off each time.

bobbeorn That's an interesting idea. I kind of threw this together with the scrap stuff I had at that moment, including just about this amount of scrap 2X6, but if you were building to a design that is an interesting concept. I think it would need some kind of fixed foot below the wheels in the same axis to pivot on to make that a fast and ergonomic transition.

Nice, but eay too much work. Got tired just watching.

Well, for sifting soil and compost there aren't many options, you either sweat or you spend a lot of $ on a powered system like a trommel. The point of this device was to sift soil using available scrap. I don't find physical labor a thing to scorn.
