Hey guys! This video shows a detailed and complete documentation of my newest build, a 1 meter Balsa DLG (discus launch glider). This video will show and describe my methods for creating the pod, designing and measuring wing structure, and hooking up the “spring-and-string” linkage. It will also cover what tools I use, what quality wood and carbon fiber was used, build time, and more.
If you enjoyed the video, a like or comment is always appreciated! And if you want to see more such content, subscribe to my channel so you don’t miss upcoming videos every Saturday! Thanks for watching!

It's a shame there are no plans for this model, I'm sure if you sell them you can make a good profit for your next project. well done with the build.

Hello I love your builds they're super solid ! I got a question, I got an Anglewing designs mini pug dlg kit on the way and given the wings are balsa and need to be covered, do you install the throwing peg before or after covering?? Thank you in advance Zach
@AeroCraftAviation
@AeroCraftAviation 4 года назад
Thank you! Glad you enjoy. Regarding the throwing peg. I actually don't use throwing pegs on my designs. I find I can still throw to 30 meters or so without a peg, and then I can ditch the extra drag and weight of the peg. (Remember that the peg actually infers a weight addition of twice its weight, because it must be balanced out with weight on the opposite wingtip). But Since the Pug is designed with a peg, I would recommend installing the peg after covering. Cover the wing, then cut a hole where the peg goes. Before installing the peg, use a wire or something to poke lots of tiny holes in the film around the peg. That way the adhesive can seep into the wood around the peg without being blocked by the covering film. Also, that way any air trapped in the adhesive can leak out, and you won't get bubbly covering around the peg.

Hey I am the first to comment! Making the video for it is just as much a skill as the model building. This should be a good flyer, really enjoyed the video.

@@AeroCraftAviation What kind material covers the wing? Maybe it is duct tape? Thanks!

@@AeroCraftAviation Do you think this wing shape is two pieces 0.5 cm thick foam boards (shape is Your beautiful wing shape) in the middle with a foam stiffener and then covering with adhesive tape, it would be good for a DLG? The top wing shape is larger a bit than the bottom. Similar to the Spinster DLG: www.flitetest.com/articles/foamboard-spinster-f3k-beginner-dlg.
@AeroCraftAviation
@AeroCraftAviation 3 года назад
@@goldenfish77 Yes, what you describe will work. I have built a few foam board DLGs before, with that method. The flight ability is pretty good.

what im trying to build too, out of curiosity did you have to add any ballast for it to fly well?
@AeroCraftAviation
@AeroCraftAviation 4 года назад
Well usually you get the best glide performance with the lowest possible weight. But ballast is sometimes necessary to get good launch height or fly in strong wind. So I only add ballast for windy days or high throws, because it will always decrease the glide capability.

Hey do you know the dimensions of the glider and also how do you get the tapered airfoil cutouts? Thanks, love your build
@AeroCraftAviation
@AeroCraftAviation 4 месяца назад
Thanks for your comment. Span is 1 meter. Root chord is 175 mm. Planform is approx. an ellipse. Tapered airfoil cutouts are cut by hand. Cutting guides can be printed from airfoiltools.com . Navigate to Airfoil Search.

@@axelsmith209 Look for the Mark Drela Bubble Dancer airfoils on airfoiltools . Frankly any of them will work but the thicker ones like AG16 are better for a little floater like this

Niceee. What glue for balsa you used
@AeroCraftAviation
@AeroCraftAviation 3 года назад
Medium viscosity CA glue for small joints, 30-minute epoxy resin for tougher joints, Titebond wood glue for some joints, 24-hour epoxy resin for carbon fiber joints.

How will you launch it, no finger peg on the wing tip.
@AeroCraftAviation

Grip the wingtip with thumb and fingers, and release at the end of the arm swing. Easy technique, alleviates the drag and weight of the throwing peg, and achieves about 90% the same launch altitude.
