Dr. Catherine Jacobs, DVM of Loomis Basin Equine Medical Center (LBEMC) discusses Scratches in Horses.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Dr. Catherine Jacobs grew up on the East Coast and received her undergraduate degree from Hamilton College in upstate New York. Moving west, she attended the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, graduating in 2002. Prior to joining LBEMC, Dr. Jacobs practiced equine veterinary medicine in Galt, CA. Catherine is married and has two children under age 5. In her free time (are you kidding?), she enjoys riding and showing her hunter/jumper.
Dr. Jacob’s practice interests lie primarily in reproduction, preventative medicine, dentistry, lameness, and pre-purchase examinations. Additionally, she completed an exhaustive program in equine acupuncture and enjoys combining Western and Eastern medicine in a variety of medicine and lameness/soundness cases. Dr. Jacobs has extensive experience breeding mares with cooled and frozen semen, and she has recently introduced deep horn insemination and embryo transfer procedures.
ABOUT LBEMC
Conveniently located in the community of Penryn, California, just northeast of Sacramento, LBEMC offers a practice unique to the area. With the exception of the U.C. Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, LBEMC is the only facility in Northern California offering hospitalization, surgery and intensive care for horses. The original Loomis Basin Veterinary Clinic was established in 1975 for both farm and companion animals. In 1991, the large animal clinic was established as an independent practice in order to improve patient care by focusing services primarily on horses. With the equine hospital opened in 2004, the practice was officially renamed Loomis Basin Equine Medical Center in 2005.
Today, LBEMC doctors bring a combination of specialty training focusing on continuing education, energy, and a commitment to quality health care for horses. Associate doctors are selected for their high professional standards, humanitarian spirit, and specific interest in horses.

How do I tell when the scratches have healed? My horse has scratches and lost a lot of her leg hair but I don’t know how to tell when it’s healed. Also should I keep treating it until the hair has grown back?

Sorry to hear that you’re dealing with this! Great question though. Yes you should continue treating until the hair is growing back. It doesn’t need to be full length hair but you should see hair growth at least starting. Hope that helps.
