Screaming B-52 Bombers Landing at RAF Fairford

As those eight ear piercing B52 engines head towards you on the approach to land, they give you a tinnitus ring and once they go over you go a bit deaf, and it's total silence, strange thing to experience. Great sound though 👍
Amazing to watch as they pilot lines up for the runway sideways, then yaws in at the last moment, crabbing it round to touch down perfectly.

I visited Fairford in 1991, when I dragged my new girlfriend and new 1974 camper van, to see the airshow. The only things I remember are the B-52 flypast and forgetting the teabags. I still have the camper, I still have the girlfriend (wife) and the B-52 still flies over Fairford. I never forgot the teabags again. Fantastic video. Thanks. ..

@Coleen West It's because the B 52 can carry a number of types of munitions from nuclear weapons to upwards of 40, ooo pounds of conventional bombs. One B52, using on nuclear bombs can flatten a small city from an altitude of about 40,000 feet. You don't hear it coming. It is an EXTREMELY intimidating and powerful aircraft.

I enjoyed this footage. I love the B-52, but I mostly enjoy this and other RAF Fairford RU-vid videos because they bring back my fond memories or the base and surrounding area. My father was in the US Air Force’s Strategic Air Command, and was stationed at Fairford from March 1961 through October 1964. We lived in Church Street in Meysey Hampton. In October my father was moved to RAF Brize Norton where stayed until the last of the SAC B-47’s returned to the US in May 1965. I enjoy my time here, and loved our old cottage in Meysey Hampton, and hope to return some day soon and revisit.... perhaps I’ll stay at Masons Arms if they still rent rooms... 😉

Nothing better than smelling the jet fuel exhaust and hearing them screening engines. Flying at 60,000 feet is an awesome experience. My time with the Air Force will alway be with me. Worked Avionics Instruments on the G models back in the late 70's early 80's and they were almost as old as me at the time -- now they're almost 40 years older. Well, the G models are all gone as best I can tell so only the H models are left. They were the first to go from turbojet to turbofan engines, but back then they were really low bypass so only a bit more thrust than the turbojets they replaced. I'd love to get a look inside a 52H that's still in service to see what changes have been made to the instruments.

I was a crew chief on B-52D's and then got moved to A/R when I made E-5 because they needed a seven level supervisor. Lucky me. Even then ('70s) we knew we were working on a museum piece. All of our D's were '55 and '56 tail numbers from what I remember. I'm glad I got the chance to be a part of history but I don't think I'd want to do it again, especially the A/R part. Being a 22 year old supervisor on full jackings of a flexy-assed B-52 so we could do gear swings is not for the faint of heart. If we had broken the back on one of them I'd probably still be paying for it (we used to say "You''ll have to reenlist 'til the second coming just so you can pay for it by allotment"). Although I didn't exactly love them at the time, in retrospect I love all BUFFs but have a soft spot in my heart for the Arc Light and Linebacker II flyin', Big Belly havin' Dog model, aka The Dirty Dog. Love the tall tails, black and camo paint jobs, quad .50s with the gunner in back, and water injected J-57's eating up all 13,000 feet on MITOs with the wings and spoilers flapping like a big ol' gooney bird.

Never thought of that....a good idea. BUT I believe I remember reading, in the 1950's or 60's that the circle is a symbol for "fire" and the straight line with the two out stretched arms pointing down means "destruction of humanity". In other words the symbol is interpreted as "death of humanity by fire" (Nuclear fire) which of course was why protesters used that symbol to protest B-52's, nuclear submarines, ICBM'S and/or any other weapon with nuclear capability.

I did not realize the "newer" turbofan engines smoked as much as they do. I know the early model "straight pipes" did. They plan on keeping the buffs in service for quite a while, I wonder if it would be feasible to re-engine them with 4 modern high bypass ratio turbofans. Probably get much better range - loiter time - etc. There might be some ground clearance issues, or who knows just what structural problems or aerodynamic issues might rear their ugly head. That's why they call it "rocket science".

Fairchild A.F.B. outside of Spokane, Washington used to have B-52’s back in the early 70s. They would rattle our windows really bad in the apartment where my family and I lived whenever they flew over. They would wake me in the early hours, but eventually I got used to loud rattling windows and would sleep through the B-52’s when they flew overhead.

I could watch this all day! I grew up next to Carswell AFB in Fort Worth Texas during the Vietnam War less than 1 / 2 mile from the South runway and every day during the week all the KC-135s and B-52s would return from practice flights or from overseas flights to Guam, etc.

last month a b52 came over my house at 16000ft here's how I discovered it: It was cloudy at the time. I was chilling out on my laptop which I'm doing now, until I heard a loud jet like noise. So I checked flightradar24, nothing. Then on ADS-B Exchange, I see a plane at this altitude registered as 60-0025. I check it out, and find out that it was one of these loud beasts. I then found out it has eight jet engines, and from there I knew how it was so bleeding loud :D
