I use an all black system with RIP on my epson printer and I get great results. But you are totally right. If you are not using it on a daily basis it can dry up in the heads and that is quite the headache. I gotta say being able to print nice crisp halftones really brought my shop to the next level. Great video as always and everyone Keep Printing!!
Matt Bouressa Thanks, glad you enjoyed the video. Oh yeah totally. RIP will give you the best halftones even over Photoshops raster halftones in my opinion. And RIP with continuous inks or all black systems can be a necessity once you reach a certain printing level. Thanks for watching. Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - catspitscreenprintsupply.com/
One thing that I've suggested to a lot of startup printers, is instead of spending a lot of money on a tabloid printer, or trying to 'patch' together 8.5x11 sheets to get a larger print, most copy centers only charge about $2 for an 11x17 B&W transparency printing from a provided PDF. (my local copy shop actually charges a lot less, if I provide the vellum to print on) The opacity for laser isn't quite as good, but a spray with something like 'toner aide' helps. (also a great backup, if you're having printer problems, and have a job to get out. :D )
lostboytnt1 Awesome, thanks for sharing. Yes, toner aide can help out: catspitscreenprintsupply.com/sprayway-toner-aide-16oz-can/ You can also double up the transparencies using a light box or a window in your home. Just line them up and tape them together well. Thanks for watching. Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - catspitscreenprintsupply.com/
Screenprinting Tee Shirts: RIP Software & All Black Ink Systems? This is a video I made because I am getting this question a lot. This is one of those things that gets convoluted by marketing and advertising ploys from the biggest companies in the market. I thought it was time to rundown the basics as I know them and clear up some of the myths and misnomers about RIP software and all black ink systems. Here I discuss what RIP actually does and why it alone does not make your film positives darker or denser. I also touch on all black ink systems and dye based inks compared to the standard pigment inks you get in the Epson printers from the factory. This video is designed to clear up the advertisements and sales pushes to sell RIP packages to start up or beginner screen printers. Not all RIP software is the same and they all do different things but this information is general and true for most scenarios. There are always exceptions to the rule. But if you’re in the market for an inkjet printer, RIP software and an all-black ink system you may want to watch this video first. Awesome vid, I appreciate this. I was a little confused on this issue. I will not be doing half-tones at first. My designs are pretty basic, eventually I will be doing the half-tones, thanks again...Very helpful information.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed the video. You're welcome. Good luck! Thanks for watching! Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - CatspitScreenPrintSupply.com/
Thank you for this clear, concise and HONEST breakdown. Im just starting out and this issue was confusing me. Spending $1200 on a printer and software just isnt realistic for my current situation. Thanks alot catspit productions.
I have a question. I have an epson 7840 which I have been using to print my positives. Right now I do not have a rip and if I do halftimes I just bitmap the image in photoshop. Everything is coming out fine however my printer is burning through ink EXTREMELY fast. And the ink ain’t cheap that’s for sure. I am choosing premium glossy photo paper and best quality so maybe I should change those settings to save on some ink. I was considering a rip software because I heard in a ryonet video that rip softwares allows you to use just the black ink whereas right now my printer is using all of the color inks to make black… which makes 0 sense to me but apparently there is no changing that if you use photo paper. Would this be in my best interest? Or maybe I buy a different inkjet printer and get rid of the 7840? Any information from anyone will be highly appreciated.
It all depends on how much film you print each day. If you switch to an all black ink system, it needs to be used everyday otherwise it will clog. If you use RIP software with the inks you have it should simply print from the black cartridge only. That's because if you have any CMY in there RIP software will try to separate that. Follow? So if you use RIP with stock inks it should really print from the black cartridge only. You can't send colors through RIP without it trying to separate them. Just work in spot colors with gradients and use RIP and it should help out in that you should be using mostly black ink. Thanks for watching! Just as a note, I used accurip on a epson 1430 and printed both with and without the accurip using all black ink. the accurip print was darker. The print without the accurip was using the all black ink but I am assuming it only used the one cartridge. I posted a video on my instagram channel of the difference holding them up to light. I think for regular solid images it doesnt need to be so dark but for halftones I think it does help keep the smaller dots from getting cut. your right though, unless you need to do halftones it isn't really needed
Hooked Graphics Cool, thanks for sharing. As far as I know Accurip does not use all the print heads simultaneously. Perhaps it may lay down a higher volume of black ink than printing without it but at a certain point the ink will run off the film if the emulsion is not heavy enough to receive it. Technically speaking only the dye based all black inks will make the film darker. But like I said each product is different and may do different things. But RIP is not necessary for making great film positives. It is necessary for halftones like you said. So for beginners a $1700 film output system is not necessary unless there is a specific reason you need it. That's really the point of this video. Thanks for watching. ***** Oooopppps! I fixed it. Thanks for letting me know. That's how I work. I'm not a sales person, I'm an artist helping others and I am completely honest when it comes to selling. I like to sell stuff and make money, don't get me wrong, but I want to know my customer is educated and very happy with their purchase. Try me out sometime ;) Thanks for watching. Thank you my friend. I really needed to know all this.. I wasnt sure what the rip software would do for me. besides .. it costs a lot for what they say it does. I am satisfied with what my epson 1400 is doing.. its doing an awesome job. I appreciate your information and efforts.

I use an Epson WF-7520 with Cobra Ink Multi color dye ink (only because it is cheaper than cartridges, and my wife is a Kindergarten teacher who prints out a lot of stuff for school.....I mean a lot) and waterproof inkjet film. I set my settings to print in full color photopaper with the best setting. I do however have my blacks in Corel set to be a rich black (K100, c50, m30, y30). I use a poly emulsion with a very small window on a regular blacklight exposure unit, and never a have a problem with density. Hope this helps.
Robert Kleist Sounds like a very cool set up, thanks for sharing. And thanks for watching. Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - catspitscreenprintsupply.com/
Daniel Cervantes They can work perhaps. If they are not dense enough you can double them up. Thanks for watching. Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - catspitscreenprintsupply.com/
Thanks for the video. I was thinking about purchase all black ink but maybe not. Do you have video in how to set up EPSON printer to the darkest positive? I already have EPSON WF7620 printer.
Keith Lohachareonvanich You’re very welcome. I appreciate your support. No, sorry i do not have that sort of video but you may want to check the link for the article in the video description. Thanks for watching. Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - catspitscreenprintsupply.com/
Great Video! Thanks for always sharing. As far as printers are concerned, is the Epson always recommended because of some advantage over others? The Canon printers available today seem to faster and produces higher DPI prints (not sure how that matters when printing films), but do you have any experience with Canon printers? Is there a specific reason that Epsons are so heavily used by screen printers? Thanks!
xMDWST You’re very welcome. Glad I can help out through my videos. I think this is the case because Epson printers seem to be able to handle the clear film positive and feed it with no problems. Many printers cannot handle what we call "clear media" so they cannot print film positives without a white guide strip. I do not know about the Cannon printers as far as whether they can do the clear media. But you don't need an extra high DPI printer to make film positives. 150 to 300 DPI is plenty for translation to mesh. Thanks for watching. Colour rich black isn't always better, I tried out many combos and settings before settling on K 100% and greyscale off. K 100% was slightly darker and saves wasting the other colours! Oh and is RIP needed at all? I recently seen a vid halftones are possible without it!?
StellaDave Actually, technically the color rich black should be way better than only black. Here's why; when we use 100% CMYK we are putting yellow and red in the mix there. Yellow and red filters will block UV light. So they block the UV light through filtration just like when we use a yellow or red light in the darkroom. Also it will physically have more ink creating a denser film positive. 100% K or black by itself will never be as rich or have the red and yellow filtering properties. With the color rich black your film positive does not need to be so opaque you cannot see through it. If you like Photoshop and raster halftones then you can use that without RIP but the best quality halftones will be achieved with vector art using RIP. That's my take on it anyways ;) Thanks for watching. ScreenPrinting Equipment & Supplies - catspitscreenprintsupply.com/
SeeJay Steuber Thank you very much, I appreciate your support! Thanks for watching. Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - catspitscreenprintsupply.com/
Hey Stewart! Yeah I looked into this further and made a follow up video about it. Evidently the Claria inks are dye based even though you would think they would be pigment based for the photographic market. Back in my day we wanted pigment based inks for printing photos. But I suppose inkjet ink technology has evolved. You can use the standard inks for film. They work fine. Thanks for watching! Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - CatspitScreenPrintSupply.com/
Thanks again for saving me money Johnathan. I guess I will not need the all black. I will call you 11-10-17. I am ready to get my supplies before the year ends.

gapipkin I don't think there is such a thing as inexpensive RIP.... LOL ;) Most cost about $400 to $500 to purchase. catspitscreenprintsupply.com/filmmaker-version-4-rip-software/ Thanks for watching. Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - catspitscreenprintsupply.com/
I had bad experiences with Epson Printers and they kill ink super fast. What do you think about me getting a Canon PIXMA PRO-100? I want to do heat transfers, film, and cmyk.
+Antonio D Really? I do just fine with my 1430. Works great. I really am not a computer printer expert so I am unfamiliar with that model. Epson is the standard since most RIP software will be more compatible with more Epson printers than any others. So if the Cannon printer can handle "clear media" then you may be just fine with it. But whether or not it is compatible with RIP, I do not know. Thanks for watching. Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - catspitscreenprintsupply.com/
CatspitProductions Oh ok. Well I had a Epson 500 so it's not as top of the line as yours. Hopefully this Cannon gets what I need done. Thanks for replying!

Very nice quality video. I utilize RIP software only for off-set printing. Most of the printing I do now is on a Wide Format. Not sure we can do shirts like you can though daddy-o. Wide format in theory can print on anything we can fit under the heads I suppose. Anyway nice upload and nice set-up! -Straycat James
CRFTgaming Thank you! My cameras actually suck and the color for each is different. I also get different color hues when I am zoomed in or out. But the HD quality and audio is pretty good ;) Thank you, though I do wish I had better cameras to work with. Yeah sure you can. You can do film positives with a wide format and RIP. You can use roll films and simply cut it as needed. Most bigger print shops use roll films anyway. Give me a call anytime if you need some help. Thank you, glad you enjoyed the video. I had a few video snafus with my most recent uploads... LOL. Thanks for watching. Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - catspitscreenprintsupply.com/
CatspitProductions We are using an EFI H652 UV Hybrid Printer. We utilized a digital front end but you are correct that there is a communication compatibility between the RIP and wide format. Once again, great content and thanks for the upload. -Straycat James
Yes, you can do halftones with AccuRIP or any RIP software for that matter. If you want to do CMYK process work then you need process inks but you can do halftone images with standard inks too. It's all about how you create the artwork. Thanks for watching. Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - catspitscreenprintsupply.com/
Hello Jonathan! If i print on a waterproof and non-waterproof film positives. is the difference that HUUUGE for an artwok that is 55LPI?? please say no, cause im broke. lol. thank you Jonathan! God Bless you man!

I've been using a CISS for 4 years now. My tip is to buy Durafirm ink and not use the cheap Chinese ink most sellers on ebay and other ink sites sell. They will clog constantly and prints won't be consistent. Durafirm makes most manufacturers ink and it is actually cheaper than the Chinese ink and more closer to say Epson's stock ink.
+Donny Showalter Interesting, thanks for sharing. Yes, the Chinese inks can be an issue. Thanks for watching. Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - catspitscreenprintsupply.com/
