Melena Ryzik, New York Times culture reporter, hosts an advance screening of Jim Jarmusch’s new zombie comedy film, “The Dead Don’t Die,” followed by a Q&A with the writer-director.
Selected for the prestigious opening spot at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, “The Dead Don’t Die” takes place in the peaceful town of Centerville, which finds itself battling a zombie horde as the dead start rising from their graves. The film’s all-star lineup - “the greatest zombie cast ever disassembled” - includes Bill Murray, Adam Driver, Tilda Swinton, Chloë Sevigny, Steve Buscemi, Danny Glover, Rosie Perez, Iggy Pop, RZA, Selena Gomez, Carol Kane and Tom Waits.
New York City filmmaker Jarmusch (“Only Lovers Left Alive,” “Coffee and Cigarettes,” “Down by Law,” “Stranger Than Paradise”) discusses bringing the wry, rad vision he has honed over three decades of indie filmmaking to a whole new genre with a large ensemble cast that includes many repeat collaborators.
Filmed live at TheTimesCenter.

I’ve long loved Jim’s work. I’ve seen the movies he’s referred to but didn’t like this movie. Knowing the premise might have helped. Exceptional cast! I enjoy his humor....Waiting for his next vision 🖤

I've actually reconsidered this. Taken at face value this film doesn't seem to work, but when you think about it the allegory actually does. Things that seem to "go nowhere" are key points in this allegory. For example, Murray and Driver acknowledging the "script" seems like a failed attempt at breaking the fourth wall when in fact it's really there to elucidate how people are trapped by societies expectations. The kids from juvenile detention that don't do anything but escape seems pointless, but their survival (like Tom Waits) shows that only those who are not entrenched in society can survive it's rampant mind control and consumerism (unlike trendy hipsters and capitalist shop keepers). I could go on, but you get the point. I'm not saying that all this works in terms of making an entertaining movie, but ideologically the film is cohesive.

its a very ham fisted message the film tries to get across, but its Jarmusch ham fisted, which i can accept.

TimesTalks can you put a 'spoiler alert' in your title because not everyone will have watched the movie before watching this interview. Melena said they would cut out the spoilers but the producers didn't... Thanks.

Ruling history has even oppressed our capacity to dream. Look at the movies that we see all the time. It's easy to imagine the end of the world -- an asteroid destroying all of life, and so on -- but we cannot imagine the end of capitalism. Žižek 🧙‍♂️

I had the same response initialy, then I thought about it for a bit, I think it was supposed to be bad and you're reasons for disliking it are valid. But I think the subtext of creative and existential and spiritual bancruptcy, being set in a tired genre that has been milked to death like the zombie genre and the lack of enthusiasm of the actors ect. To me that's genius that someone would deliberately set out to make a crap film as a reflection of our general crapness as a species, I think it's great I love it.
