Scribble drawing tutorial for beginners

Scribble drawing or sketching is a wonderfully freeing technique which will relax you and warm up your drawing muscles all at the same time. It is fast and surprisingly forgiving, so if you are a beginner and new to line and wash, it can be a fun exercise to do. In fact, it is rather addictive! Just to mix things up, I am using a glass dip pen in this tutorial. Don't worry if you don't have one. You can use a fine liner (Micron) pen, or a fountain pen or indeed, a ball point biro. As long as it makes a continuous line for more than a few cms or inches, it will be great for scribble drawing.
I start by giving you some tips - how to stop your scribbles becoming tight and repetitive, what to avoid (outlining) and how you can take things further by adding a wash of dilute ink to your scribble sketch.
I'll show you want to do if you get smudges or drops of ink on your work, so don't panic and jump on in.
The reference for this sketch came from Pixabay and I will put a copy on the community tab of this channel. If you enjoy this, I have also done an elephant in a similar style. You can find it here (released on 27 Nov 2022).
If you enjoyed this tutorial, do consider liking and subscribing as it really helps my channel get seen by more people. I try to release a film each week, usually on Sunday at 2pm (GMT).
You might also enjoy the pen and wash dog and raccoons I have done:

I have an in depth line and wash course over at www.lizchadertonstudio.co.uk if you would like to learn all sorts of techniques and my book (pubslished by The Crowood Press) is available online or in book shops - Line and Wash Painting by Liz Chaderton.

AMAZING. I am someone who would normally NEVER even TRY to draw a rhino, but by gosh I did one with scribbling. Totally surprised myself and want to try again. And again. Great encouraging comments, Liz. You help us feel fearless, which is when the good art happens (for me anyway). Thank you!!

Thank you! I’ve played with scribble drawings but this gives me more sense of direction…. of how to turn something fun into something more. And I think I’ve got an old bottle of Quink somewhere 😅.

Hopefully it’s black Quink and should separate out.

This looks like so much fun! I want to be good at art so bad, but my perfectionist quality stops me from trying most things....that and I'm not very good at drawing. Thank you for the tutorial though because it was fun to watch this beautiful artwork come together!

Love this! I’ve been carrying both waterproof and non-waterproof pens and a sketchbook (or 2 or 3 😂) to alternate between traditional line and wash with watercolor (markers this time) and just the use of non-watercolor pens as a watercolor (marker) substitute. Such fun and lovely possibilities! Yet you’ve inspired me even more because this effect is beyond what I had envisioned, didn’t think of the monochromatic effect I can achieve with a slightly different technique (I don’t like the idea of taking a dippen with me when I’m out of the house). Look forward to use this technique at home though, without a glass pen for now though but I can always make your cola pen with an experimental new design to see if I can sort of mimic the glass dip pen’s perks over other dip pens 😃 Although it’ll have to wait because I’m being hold captive by my to needy cats, what a shame lol 🥰 Thanks for another great video, I love your approach to things and way of thinking 😁
@LizChadertonArt
@LizChadertonArt Год назад
sounds like you are doing all sorts of great things. I don’t dip pens outside either, especially a glass one. The only problem with using a cola pen for scribble art is that it might not give a long enough line per dip. But try and see!

I have done a couple of scribble drawings and was so much fun. I really like that you’ve added more interest with the spraying, spattering and brushwork. I haven’t seen that added to a scribble technique and love it! Where can I order the glass dip pen? Thank you!

If you check on Amazon or eBay you should find lots. They vary from £5 up depending on how fancy they are. Be warned, they are addictive!! You might like this film all about them too: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rjWxsthCpIc.html

Have you tried the Kakimori brass nib Liz? More unbreqkable than a glass pen that you can easily break
@LizChadertonArt
@LizChadertonArt Год назад
No I haven't. I did lots of research and decided they were too expensive for me - about £50 for the nib. They look amazing. Do you have one?

Are there 'good' glass pens and 'bad' ones or ones to avoid ? There seem to be such a huge range and differing costs. Any recommendations ?
@LizChadertonArt
@LizChadertonArt 10 месяцев назад
I like ones with spiral swirls on the nib rather than straight as they hold more ink. Price is more about a fancy design...
