Nice coasters! Fun designs. Question: I'm looking at 3 gouges to buy that I don't have the size. All are Swiss made...Pfeil. The first one is a #5-5mm, the second is a #5-8mm, and the third one is a #6-3mm. Would they be useful? I don't have anything like them that is flatter and that narrow. Should I also be looking for a Veiner? If so, what would you recommend. I'm trying to add to what I believe would be my normal needs.I don't want to start a project and find I'm missing a helpful gouge. This is what I already have as follows: A Pfeil 5#a x 16mm Spoon Gouge, a #10 x 14mm , a #11 x 3mm, a #3 x 25mm, a #5 x 17mm, a #7 x 11mm, a #11 x 6mm, and a60 degree x 9mm. Al of these last ones are U.S. made by Flexcut. Please advise what you think would be in my interest to add to my collection. I bought all these from Woodcraft Supply here in the U.S. They have the best prices. I have also a hard maple round x 3" diameter mallet on its way. All the Flexcut gouges can be used with a mallet. But, not the Pfeil gouges. All the gouges are two-handed gouges. Thanks for your time and trouble! I know it is a lot to ask! But you two always have great content and advice! You and your dad take care!

Hi Michael, hope all is well with you. Glad you enjoyed the video. It sounds like you are getting together a good selection of gouges. Smaller gouges can certainly come in useful and we often use them to create the stop cut when we don't have the correct larger gouge. It is worth noting that there is a difference in the numbers system depending on whether they are made in Europe or the UK. It's the UK system that we are familiar with ourselves. Most of our smaller gouges are #3, I believe this would be #4 in Europe. When it comes to adding a new gouge, there are never any guarantees and it is always taking a bit of a chance when it comes to the amount of use you will get. What I would say is if the costs are fairly reasonable adding extra gouges will provide additional options. From what you have described I would suggest getting started with what you have. I know it might be a little frustrating to be stopped in your tracks when you realise you need another gouge but the best way to find out what you will need is to get what you have into action. From our own experience, we worked for several decades without certain gouges that today we use for most of our carving. As an example, we used to use a straight chisel for much of our carving. Now we have access to our Herring Bros and Addis #3 we use them instead. It basically comes down to the fact that we didn't miss something we had never had. Hope that gives a bit of an insight. Thank you again for your support, all the very best from us all. 👍👍
