Scroll saw vs band saw takes a look at some advantages and disadvantages of working with the scroll saw and band saw. Situations where you would be better to use the scroll saw are highlighted and other times the band saw would be the better machine to use.
Both scroll saws and band saws are really useful saws that we use at our family workshop on a daily basis, choosing to use the band saw or scroll saw depending upon the situation.
If you are deciding whether to buy a scroll saw or band saw, some of the advantages and disadvantages highlighted, might give you some guidance in regards to the best choice for you.
The design of the band saw and scroll saw gives each saw advantages and disadvantages over the other saw depending upon the situation. The ideas used in this video are based upon our own personal experience and we are aware that different scroll saws and band saws might differ from the explanation we have provided. Hopefully it's a useful guide and will help in deciding whether a scroll saw or band saw is the right saw for the work that you do.

As an American, I love being taught by Brits. There is something so reassuring about the accent. You could tell me the benefits of taking a long walk off a short pier, and I’d go with it😁

Hahaha the benefits of a long walk off a short pier include the refreshing impact of the natural sea water. Probably won't help any wood working unfortunately. Both tools certainly have the potential to be time saving parts of the carving process. I started with the bandsaw, both for rough outs and processing wood in general. I had never even considered a scroll saw until I came across your channel. Because of that I am glad I did, because of you and like you, I am now a wood carver who uses a scroll saw to help me with my work.

Spot on, they are both important machines for us here at our workshop. We started in the same way, had a bandsaw first, then the scroll saw. The scroll saw probably gets the most use out of the two machines now but we wouldn't want to be without either now. Hope all is well, all the best from us all. 👍👍

Good video! I like that the scroll saw blade is fast and easy to swap out, on the other hand I like that the band saw cuts away material faster.

Great video! I guess if your going to be serious about wood work, having both would be a huge advantage. I am going to buy a scroll saw first because of the fiddly item I want to make, then I might progress onto the band saw if I get to love this hobby. Thankyou for sharing.

We work in a wide variety of different hard wood for the projects we make including Oak, Ash, Mahogany, Teak, fruit wood, Yew, Laburnum, Juniper, Walnut etc. We recycle and reclaim most of what we use. Hi Parag, great to hear from you and thank you for your kind words. For a project like that I would probably go for the band saw followed by the side attachment on our belt sander. Am I right to assume unless you’re a small item wood maker, a bandsaw will give you more depth?

Hi Great to hear from you. The band saw gives more height on the throat of the blade as a general rule. So more suitable for larger projects. Things like roughing out before you refine the finish. The scroll saw gives a more precise and accurate finish as a general rule of thumb. Having said this, it is indeed possible to make some very large projects on a scroll saw for example when using a spiral blade. Thanks for getting in touch and supporting our RU-vid channel. Hi Bailey, thanks for your question and getting in touch. A concrete saw would be out of our field of knowledge because we are focused upon wood work. However, out of the others it would be between the Band Saw, table saw/circular saw. The scroll saw is probably the least sought after despite the fact that it offers the greatest amount of options when it comes to making different items in wood due to its ability to do internal cuts. Hi Dave, delighted to hear that you enjoyed the video. The scroll saw is the machine that gets the most use for ourselves, so many jobs it can do. The band saw saves us alot of time and the table saw is great for preparing wood. Between those three you will be able to get so much done. Our Hegner Multicut 2s is an expensive purchase at first but it has paid for itself over and over. Same with our Dewalt band saw, 40 years old and still going strong as is our corenet saw too. The band saw cuts faster because it has stronger motors , if you can fit it put a 2HP motor on the scroll saw, probably would scare the sh$@t out of you
