Another excellent discussion of the pros and cons of these wonderful tools. I have a #40 from 1921-22. I've always thought Stanley got it just about perfect on that one, but now it seems LN has improved on the original somewhat. But not enough to convince me that the "upgrade" would be worth it. In terms of future videos, the comparison format you use is excellent. But even if you don't have a new-made plane (LN or Jorgensen) to compare to, I'd love to see you do a simple critical analysis of any number of the old classics, or maybe for example compare a sweetheart #4 to a #4-1/2 or a #604 or a #10-1/2. I also have a few of the beautiful old Sargent Autosets (#710, #714, etc) and a comparative review to the equivalent Stanley Baileys would be very interesting. Anyways, keep up the good work, I really enjoy your attention to all the little practical details. As a long time woodworker and tool user I'm still learning more about these tools. Thanks.

Thank you!! I do have a video in the works to look at about 30+ different no 4s :D that will take me a while and have to think of a good way to do it without making the video 5 hours long hahhaha

Good video. It is interesting to see the small tweaks Lie Nielson did on this plane. Is your comparison of the stanley planes going to be vintage or modern? And if vintage are you going to go down the line with them, eg 4, 4.5,5,5.5,6 etc... I sometimes look at 2 of the planes that I have a Lie Nielson that I got this year and a stanley I bought from a vintage tool shop. Both could be said to be made in the 20s. Just 1 is 100 years older. But still the same design from a person who lived in the 1800s. It is kind of nice that good designs last.

I don't have enough LN to go down the line through all the numbers but I will compare the ones I have and if I aquire more (borrow or buy) I'll deff add a video! It is amazing that one is so much older and the other is modern. Shows that stanley had it figured out. They unfortunately, strayed from some designs and imo was their downfall. I have not tried the current line of Stanley. That would probably be a good thing to add tho!

I have the Stanley version and I notice the plane feels like it flexes while using it. I suspect the LN doesn't do that.

That's how I should have explained it! You are 100% correct the stanley is less supported and flexes. The LN does not. Thank you!!

Great timing. I've been considering getting a scrub plane. What are your thoughts in turning an old Stanley #4 into a scrub plane? Everyone focuses on the shavings more than the wood itself. Lie Nielsen looked smoother overall. I'm guessing I'd need to put a new blade into an old Stanley scrub plane, which would put it pretty close to on par with the Stanley price-wise. Joined your buyer/seller facebook group but am a little stumped on how it works. Are there instructions? Thanks!

I have know alot of ppl that take an old no 4 and convert it into a scrub plane with good results. Takes some modification and sometimes requires the mouth of the plane to be filed open more. I had a TayTools converted scrub plane and liked thay it got wider shavings but it also required alot more effort to push because those planes are heavier and your taking bigger cuts. Imo it works but isn't better than a true scrub plane that is dedicated to the task. I am not sure if buying a new scrub iron and putting it in a stanley will produce the same results as the LN. Also not sure if that will work because there isn't alot of room between the bed, cap and post. In the group if you go to the files section at the top you will see the rules and stuff listed there. There are videos and type outs that will help explain everything. You can also search #cihiwelcome in the group and they will pop up. Hope that helps!

I ran to the shop and checked to see if I could put the LN iron in the Stanley. The cap won't seat so the iron is to thick now... I can tighten it down slightly and it can take cuts but it make me nervous that something was gonna break because it just didnt feel strong so I stopped haha

@@BatCaveCreations Thanks! I might give it a try. If I'm going to pop for a LN I think I'd rather get a #4 and turn a cheaper plane into the scrub that I won't use as much. But I agree that the mouth might be an issue. Thanks!

if you still havent bought anything, convert a wooden one into scrub. Its much easier, no mouth filing necessary and the light weight wont get you tired. @@blayne2029
