Scullion is an Irish folk rock band that came into being in the mid 1970s. They were quite popular in Ireland, and released several LPs, but only two CDs have been released to date - the compilation Ghosts And Heroes on the Kitten label in 1992 and another compilation Eyelids into Snow - A Collection in 2001. The founding members were Sonny Condell (also a member of another popular Irish music band Tír na nÓg), Philip King, Greg Boland, Freddie White and Jimmy O'Brien Moran. Robbie Overson joined the group at a later stage. Scullion continue to play live.

thanks for posting, Mike. I remember this when my son was born, up at night with him listening to music on local radio 'abc' from Tramore, which played all night, hard for todays kids to imagine national radio stations closed down at night

Fantastic. I was at UCD when I was one of only 3 people showed up for a Scullion gig in the new bar in the late '80s. We got our money refunded and Phil, Sonny and Robbie played a 1 hour gig for the 3 of us. Incredible memory.About the only decent thing that ever happened to me in the 80's in Ireland.

@@lite4919 I really hope you're ok this Christmas. I've had some shitty ones, the one when I was homeless in London, strung out on heroin was a bad 'un. I'd have to say this one is probably the worst, I lost my beloved wife to an accidental overdose of prescription drugs during the year, and I'm spending today, Christmas day, in hospital in a ward that the Covid came through like a wildfire, taking four of the patients. I'm not saying all this to try and 'one-up' you, or to solicit 'there-there's from people. I'm just saying it to let you know that I get it that when you're feeling bad anyway, Christmas has a way of making you feel REALLY bad! And when people say 'Happy Christmas', it can seem like a platitude at best, and when people say it knowing you're depressed, it can feel downright insulting - so if I say to you "Happy Christmas", I hope you won't mind. And without wishing to sound patronising, I don't have any easy answers... You say, "Where did it all go wrong" - I'm guessing by our taste in music I'm roughly of an age with you, and YEAH, I feel that way A LOT; and even if most of them go around managing to 'keep the shiny side out', you can take it to the bank, there's MILLIONS of people feeling like that. Which is kind of cold comfort I suppose, except in so far as, without knowing the specifics, you're not alone. I can't really advise you- I'm not qualified and I don't know you; but- and it's difficult with this HOOR of a virus I know- is there really no-one in your family, or do you not have even ONE decent friend, that you can reach out to? I'd be very surprised if there isn't SOMEBODY who loves you a great deal, perhaps a lot more than you know. Some problems seem intractable; tbh, some problems ARE intractable- and I often joke that "A problem shared is a problem doubled!" -but that ain't true, and I'll guarantee that there's someone there who'd be saddened that you didn't feel you could 'share' with them. As another commenter said, as well, love really IS all around -and particularly this time of year. Some people are monsters it's true, but it's easy to lose sight of that most people are, genuinely, decent- especially if you just scratch a little- they're just pre-occupied with their own shit; and there are people who are, like, SAINTS. I mean, I think back to when I was homeless, I saw a lot of humanity at its most tawdry- but every time I felt ready to throw up my hands, someone would come along and do me some act of -often extraordinary- kindness that would touch me deeply. I'm half reluctant to say to you 'seek counseling' because it can sound slightly smug, and if it doesn't work it might make you feel worse. (Also, it's probably only available over the phone at the moment 'cos of the pandemic) Still, I'd urge you to consider it - I mean, it can't do any HARM (as long as you bear in mind, it's not magic), and if you get a good counsellor, it WILL help. Off the top of my head, 'Beacon of light' are good, and they're free, or just a nominal charge, although with the pandemic, I don't know what their current arrangements are. I would just ask you, if nothing else, should you find yourself contemplating "something drastic", PLEASE, PLEASE ring the Samaritans. Or message me back, even if you're not 'in extremis'. Actually, without wishing to be dramatic, you wouldn't have to write a big 'litany' or anything, 'less you wanted to, but it would be good to hear back from you, even if it's only a 'waves hand' emoji or something, just to let us know, as some of these eejits on RU-vid say, "Who's still here in Christmas 2020?"

This song was covered by some alternative band in the early 90's - does anybody know the name of the band that covered it?

Cliffs of Dooneen 96FM in Cork used to play their version a lot, I think, as that was where I heard the name. For some reason, though, the versions that I've found by Cliffs of Dooneen (including the one on their 'Undertow' album) don't seem to be like the one that I remember from the radio.
