I stumbled upon this series, and I have to say I am absolutely loving the time you take to go through everything from the perspective of someone who doesn't know what the hell they're doing. That and your humour! Absolutely loving this series, and I appreciate you haven't gone and put it behind a Patreon paywall. You're helping to nurture the talent of future artists, and that is something that is just so magical. :)
I know this was posted 4 years ago but awesome thanks!! I just bought my first polymer clay and the tutorial search brought me here. Best ever for me. I have the same process and general size as you work in when I have sculpted with clay over the decades (rarely but enthusiastically). I didn't know anything about this stuff and was having trouble making it obey. This series is really going to help me over all. I am at the eyeball stage now. I am rewatching this lesson before I muck it up because I am notorious for diving in when the muse strikes and rarely using any reference. Yes aliens are easier lol. Subscribed for more training.
I just have to say... I've watched dozens of tutorials, and yours are the first I'm able to fully grasp and learn from. Teaching myself to sculpt right now, and your videos are AMAZING. Thank you so much for taking the time to create these
I’ve gone over so many tutorials but haven’t seen as detailed videos as yours. Thank you so much 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 the effort put into these tutorials is immense!
Thank you for making these videos. I have absolutely no experience with sculpting, or even messing around with polymer clay. I'm absolutely transfixed with the process and your explanation. Going to be spending my entire weekend poring over your videos. I'm calling this a fantastic weekend.
WOW, tHIS IS PERFECT, on my second video, excellent detail description, great in identifyig the best material, always wanted to venture into sculpting, just as an added art form, I will set aside time to rview all of your videos, it is the same as attending an $75.00 hour art class. God's Gifts is definitely being shared by you. Thanks
I've struggled with eyes for a while, gotta say this is probably the best online video for making eyes. Using a bead is a great idea. I've tried making polymer balls but usually end up with one slightly bigger and they never quite look right. I realized while watching this video and the video on make a mouth , that the problem I was having was round things to make them look correct. Now I've been able to get the tools and do a decent job. Much appreciated Josh. Keep up the good work.
I decided to learn to sculpt and my friend pointed me here. What an amazing video, I learnt so much just in video one!!! Cant wait to watch all the others.
The mini epiphany! God how many times one of those has saved a sculpture for me! New comer to the channel but binging quickly, great tips and super laid back attitude. Love it!
The rabbit hole made me want to learn how to sculpt and then I found this channel. Thanks for showing this series and very easy to understand! Going to buy some supplies now
I want to basically agree with Roxy... I have been struggling to learn... and your videos are informative, entertaining.... I don't find myself becoming bored with it... thanks for taking the time out to make these videos
Hey man, I've been struggling with eyes and this tutorial really helped me out tonight. I know there's an "Eyes 2.5" but I struggle with the bead method in a way I don't with the "roll the eye pad" method. Good watching out!
Thank you for taking the time to film this! I am taking a 3D art class in college and this was EXACTLY what I needed to know. Hope you continue with the series!
Awesome. Found this in my recommended for you list by RU-vid. I am hoping to be able to do a reasonable likeness of my mother in clay from a photo and this really helped. She passed away in 2009 and I love the photos but I would like something more. - Heidi
This is truly useful.THANKYOU I have been struggling with sculpture of face for years. You make it an easy reference...then I guess it's practise, practice and more practice. Have a blessed day
Thank you for these amazing tutorials. I am brand new at sculpting and making custom action figures and you have explained things to me far more than anyone else. So, thank you!
Awesome first video. I am looking forward to watching and learning from all of your classes. thank you for taking the time to do these and make them so easy to follow.
Thank you for this video series! Unlike other videos I've found, you are clear and keep my attention. I'm a beginner so I am looking forward to practicing these techniques so I can improve my skills.
It's because of you and this series that I now want to invest in Sculpey or polymer clay in general, this looks so much easier to use than regular pottery clay, much easier to smooth out and carve without the lumps and little boogers. Like I literally just found your channel and this series about an hour ago and am only on episode 2 and you make it look so easy and nice hahaha Update: aaaannd they don't ship to Australia. Sad face.
These videos are brilliant. One thing I noticed that carries-over from 2D art is that the very small corners of the eyes (and the mouth) make a huge difference in the character's expression.
Trying to pick up sculpting, specifically for really small work. Enjoying this series so far, thank you very much for creating it. Personally I would say don't fast forward through all the massaging work, I can always skip forward if I want but I would sometimes like to see the motions you use a little better. Thanks again :D
I was just thinking...OMG C-3PO, love him, leave it as is! So glad you said it, I can move on with watching the rest of the video xD Thank you so much for sharing these lessons with us, they're very helpful!
Okay this is 7 years old by now, but it's still the best help i've found for me on YT. It's So nice to have someone who lets you watch and not just speed through the actual work progress going: All done! See? Super easy! Thanks dude!
Not sure if you're still keeping tabs on this. Awesome tutorials. How long can you keep working on the clay for. As in can you start the head one day and come bake to it another day?
Absolutely. It takes months before the clay starts to get difficult to work. I've even come back to the same sculpture a decade later and was able to continue working on it. I recommend putting plastic wrap or foil around it just to keep the dust off.
@0:26 I was gonna ask this,I THOUGHT THAT YOU'RE GOIN' FOR THE NOSE'S?! But yeah you already said it that'll be on ep.3 lols,So I will definitely watch the 3rd part of 101 tnx man!
Man I really admire your art. But my question is, how long did it take you practicing to make the eyes so god damn perfect? I'm doing it over and over and over but can't come as much as the half as you. I don't know how to ask you about a special tutorial about only the eye or something?
hard to say. It's different for everyone. I started sculpting when I was 10, so the skill kinda grew up with me. But don't lose heart! And if you ever want feedback, critique or advice hit me up on my Discord! www.discord.gg/UjNApes
I struggle with this no water clay, im used to ceramics and paper. Lay where you can do a pulling sliding motion , it really effects my ability to make something, I find it so tedious the poking n mushing only motion with this kind of clay.
Any extra tips for working on eyes at a smaller scale. I'm doing my best but getting the eye shapes is proving difficult. Getting more success with a magnifying glass. Perhaps I need a finer tipped tool too.
Hi Josh! You are my first teacher in sculpting! I'm learning through doing, thank you. You make it look so easy! One question: how do you keep the plasticine from sticking to your tools? I'm constantly wiping the excess on my finger; it keeps me from having a smooth surface.
An amazingly large part of getting better at something is just trying and failing many times. Over time you'll accumulate a bunch of happy accidents that slowly make you better and better!
I updated the tool supplies in the description. I'm afraid I don't know anything about where to find them in Europe, but I think Amazon is pretty much everywhere.
Спасибо, было очень интересно. Даже не зная языка, руками все показали. Снимайте еще, у вас хорошо получается. подписалась, жду новых мастер классов.Удачи.
Thank you for these wonderful tutorials. But I was not expecting such beautiful music. Would you be so kind as to share the name and composer of the piece that begins at 1:38, 7:23, 9:24, and 17:19?
Actually most plastic eyes are fine at 260F. But glass eyes aren't that much more expensive if you want to be safe. If you have plastic ones just do a test. Put them on a sheet of aluminum foil and bake them by themselves for 10 minutes while watching them closely.
Please don't fast forward, I want to see every step. Also, Can you zoom in when doing the eye? It's hard to see the tool rolling. Thank you, your my favorite instucture.
It may be good to put "how to make an Eye" or something like that in the Title or the Description so that it can be found easier by People which want a specific part of a Tutorial
I'm barely started to experiment with polymer clay, but I can't seem to get eyes at all. All my stuff comes out looking amateur & ridiculous! I tried this past weekend to do a Planet of the Apes figure (Cornelius) and it ended up looking like a biker with a snout!
Just found this site- and I just started with poly clay, but I can see a future as my new main hobby- made a characature(?) Head of my brother- not bad as im a total noob!
