That's a very nice bit of kit 👍👍 I like that Baker Fan, looking forward to the video. Cheers, Alan.

The ONE thing I keep hoping to see in a laser review video is trying to cut flooring laminate as it is an amazingly cheap and strong material(basically anything you could make out of comparable thickness or slightly thinner alu-plate you can make out of flooring laminate) usable for a whole host of different projects(tools/machine-chassis/storage etc...)

A word of caution about lasers. You MUST have eye protection and air ventilation. I’d say laboratory-grade glasses, especially if you’re a new user. If you think wood smoke is somewhat safe, think again. All plywood have tons of awful glue.
@MattTester
@MattTester Год назад
Seems much more capable than the 15W unit I have, I will look into air assist. The smoke and the smell really puts me off using it though as I don't have much ventilation.

Same here. I made an enclosure with MDF following some videos I watched here. Nothing fancy, just functional with an extractor going out the window.
@sannyassi73

Without an enclosure or air assist I don't think I'd ever use my laser. My enclosure is built with cardboard/duck tape/hot glue and has held up for 8 Months so far. Due to it being cardboard it's easy to test prototype ideas- I've got a cardboard filter box as well built in. It does surprisingly well- no more smoke, no more smell. Sometimes I forget to turn the fan on and you can tell the difference within the first minute of a burn- the only thing that costed money was mostly just the fan, which I believe was about 30 USD- then a few hot glue sticks and half a roll of duck tape. I will be building an MDF box once I have the time using the cardboard setup I have now as a template. As for air assist, once you get even a cheap system setup you'll likely wonder how you ever worked without it before, it makes a huge difference!

I would love one of those, but even if I could afford it, I simply don't have the space to set one up without doing a lot of tidying up. Tidying up is not one of my skills.

Looks like it cuts anything the K40 can handle, without the need for water cooling. Well done!
@myfordboy
@myfordboy Год назад
I have a K40 but this one is better, larger bed area and more portable. It cuts better than the K40 smaller beam and kerf. Cuts faster.

First of all I find it remarkably funny that for the last 5+ years I bump into your videos for different subjects. It started when I wanted to know more about lathes. Then, later on I was researching diy aluminium casting. And now this laserthing. So thanks for sharing your interests and knowledge in (previous) videos. Learned a lot. My question for this video; did you use the two pin Molex "Emergency" connector on the Sculpfun PCB for hooking up the E-Stop button? If so, is it just a matter of replacing the jumper with a NC E-stop button? Thanks in advance!
@myfordboy
@myfordboy Год назад
Looks like I am just one step ahead of you with interests! For the e button I used a regular NC button wired in series with the low voltage supply lead from the power supply. I did not cut the exsisting lead. This plugs into a matching socket wired to the button and I added a new lead with plug from button to the machine inlet. This way I can easily take out the machine from the enclosure if needed, nothing to unwire.

$844 dollars and limit switches are exposed? It just looks like a $300 laser to me, I understand that the wattage is doubled and the holy grail linear rails, but the linear rail is only on the X axis? Why doesn't it come with the Y axis too? There is also no cable management but zip ties. It just looks cheap to me... You would be money ahead to by a cheap laser and add the sculpfun laser head to it. It wouldn't cost near as much... I just bought a Comgrow 10watt, air assist kit, and an enclosure for $355 delivered to my door. I could spend 2-3 hundred dollars and add that laser head... It may be what I do. Good video regardless, thank you for sharing. Keep up the good work!

I just had to return this machine as it could not cut round circles. I loved the features, power and the programmable air assist but if it can't do a basic thing like cut round circles then all the great features really mean nothing.

Thanks a lot. This is a great video. Just got this machine and I was wandering what power are you using? Cheers.
@myfordboy
@myfordboy Год назад
For cutting I use max power and vary the speed according to the material. I have found for thicker ply which can vary in consistency it can be better to take 2 passes at a faster speed rather than a single pass at a slower speed.

This can really cut through 3mm MDF in a single pass? All the other videos for this model do it in multiple passes.

It certainly can cut in one pass at around 400 -450mm/min.

Just taken delivery of this beast and you video was very helpful. Love your printed focus knob extensions - I don’t have the 3D print facility so any chance you could sell me a set? Also just out of curiosity, were you running all off those cut tests at 100% power? If not what were the power settings ?
@myfordboy
@myfordboy Год назад
The wood cuts were all at 100%. The foamboard was cut at 1000mm and full power. score was 2500mm and half power. Happy to print some screws for you. I don't have any more of the M4 x 50mm socket head screws i used. You can source your own or i can buy more. email me myfordboy at g mail. com

Excellent review although a fume cabinet seems a must for these beasties.
@francistaylor1822
@francistaylor1822 Год назад
Agreed. Personally I wont go near a laser with proper full fume filtration/extraction and proper eye shielding. Which is a pity as I really want one. I do like that he made the enclosure, I would suggest doing a DIY carbon filter like people use for the Voron 3d printer (nevermore max) as that would certainly help with the fumes. How do you know though that the viewport is blocking all the laser light?

Hi, I have question about airpump. Can it be turned on manually or just via lightburn?
@myfordboy
@myfordboy Год назад
You can turn it on in Lasergrbl or Lightburn. Using lasergrbl it is either on or off. With lightburn you can start and stop within an engraving. Not an issue with Lasergrbl though, just do one burn for the engraving, air off and a second for cutting, air on.

The laser will frame the size of your design with a low level spot so you can position your material before you run at full power. You can also centre the spot to the centre of your design.
