Question about this, do you need to unwrap your model before sculpting VDM?

Yes, you need a UV Map for this. You can use Blender's smart UV if you're too lazy to unwrap the model manually

Does the object need to be UV mapped? Aren't UV maps lost when you remesh or use dyntopo? Doesn't sculpt mode not display uv mapped textures while sculpting?

Yes, the mesh needs to be UV mapped. If you notice, there's a button to sculpt image, this will use the VDM as the multires displacement, and then you can use apply sculpt button to bake the multires to VDM. Since this is multires based, remesh and dyntopo aren't supported.

Hello, just wondering. Is the VDM layer is a result of multires baking? Or did you use other method to get the height map? I am not aware that multires can bake height for local space displacement.

Yes, it uses multires for baking the displacement. I used custom calculations to make bake results into tangent space.
